Need help cleaning up my PC in IT Support ·
vividdriver22 said:...Uninstalling Windows isn't really an option,...

It looks like your Windows installation is just a mess—it's obvious junk has piled up from various installs over time. I'm not sure what specific advice you're looking for, but honestly, a clean reinstall of Windows would probably be the best use of your time.

But if you really want to waste time on this;
Make sure you only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having multiple ones will just cause them to fight each other and kill your machine's performance. If you can't manually remove Chromodo, maybe try rolling back to a system restore point from before you installed it, then install something else (like Avira, AVG, or Avast).

To handle a complete Uninstallation, you should use Revo Uninstaller http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_..._download.html

As for Skype, it probably needs some kind of registry tweak—though, who knows what your registry looks like after messing around with CCleaner.

What are your specs? Maybe the performance issues are because some part of your hardware is just lagging behind.
Bradley Lewis59 said:Any recommendations for a Home Theater PC case? My main goals are elegance and silence—ideally something horizontal that can fit an ATX motherboard. I might be open to smaller form factors, but I already have some parts on hand, so I'd rather try to work with those first.
I assume I'll need a GPU too; my only real requirements are that it doesn't have coil whine and can pass through surround sound formats via HDMI.

Maybe list out what components you actually have or plan to use (brands and models)—that's mostly important for sizing. Also, if you're looking to buy new stuff, let me know what kind of budget you're working with.

Jason Fisher59 said:I really like the idea of a tiny, silent machine (I'm thinking along the lines of a NUC or similar small PCs). What would be the bare minimum specs needed for smooth multitasking? Something like browsing Chrome and Opera at the same time, running Winamp, downloading torrents in the background, maybe opening Word or Excel occasionally, and playing MKV movies.

Are we talking about a barebones config or...?
Personally, I've always been pretty fond of the whole Chromebox concept.

Microsoft Office help needed in IT Support ·
You didn't actually get Microsoft Office bundled with your new laptop—that’s a separate software package unless you specifically paid extra for it. At most, what came pre-installed on your machine is just a 21-day trial version of Office.

The key is the main issue here. People were paying whatever was demanded just to get their files back—some even paid and still walked away empty-handed without a key. The real problem is, what happens to the encryption key once you've wiped out the WannaCry?

I suspect he’s more frustrated by his computer freezing up mid-task than he is by the temperatures. Honestly—it feels like the heat might not even be the issue here.

Then you definitely don't have enough airflow through the case. Is the tower sitting on a flat, hard surface—far enough away from things to actually pull in some fresh air?

Maybe try opening up the side panel and then checking the temperatures again.

So, just like Quote: The New Guy mentioned—once you've gone through the motions of testing the latest drivers, maybe try rolling back to an older version... perhaps one from back when your graphics card wasn't giving you any trouble in the first place.

Nancy Parker6 said:I've got five fans in my rig (it's one of those MSI Dragon gaming cases)—airflow is absolutely perfect, every single component practically has its own dedicated cooling, which is exactly why I'm so worried! The main issue here—the most important thing—is that the screen goes black, the mouse and keyboard just freeze up completely, and I'm forced to do a hard restart... and then everything works perfectly fine again!

that's the real problem here
Have you tried pulling the card out, blowing the dust out of the slot, and cleaning the contacts on the card itself?
Another possibility might be that the thermal paste on the GPU heatsink needs replacing. Some older AMD cards came with really terrible factory paste—I remember having an issue with my old 4870 from EVGA
Robert Rodriguez2 said:It's a bad idea because those are bottom-tier power supplies. Under any real load, they can easily pop and take out a component—or your entire rig—right along with them.

And I'm guessing that's not exactly what you're aiming for.🙂

Signature.
A Microsoft power supply might hold up in an office setup where the load is minimal, but for anything else... I guess it's pretty questionable.
Issues with Windows Media Player playlists in IT Support ·
mellowowl73 said:The issues start popping up after the computer has been running for a while—maybe 7 or 8 hours of uptime or more. Both Windows Media Player and VLC act up the same way.
If I start a playlist, the program just skips through every single song 😕 usually the track being played turns blue, but here, the blue highlight just races down the list without any of them actually playing. It's the same thing in VLC. But if I just play a single song—like opening an individual file instead of a playlist—it plays perfectly fine, even on repeat. Everything is okay there; it's just when it involves a playlist that things break.

These kinds of symptoms usually happen when a player can't find the files at the location listed in the playlist. Have you moved the songs since the playlist was created? Or maybe try making a new playlist directly in the folder where the music is stored?

mellowowl73 said:It's the same with VLC—when I try to watch a movie, as soon as I hit anything—pause, full screen, or even just a right-click—it freezes and starts acting weird, almost like it wants to play but someone is constantly spamming the pause button. Sometimes the screen even just goes white on its own.

Playback issues can stem from several different things. Does the movie work fine in a different player? Have you tried reinstalling or updating VLC? From a hardware standpoint, it could be the graphics card or the drive, but I guess it would be best to rule out software problems first.

mellowowl73 said:On a smaller note, if I minimize multiple windows of the same program so they stack on the taskbar, I can't maximize any of them anymore—not even one—unless I go through the Task Manager. If I hover over the icon, those little preview thumbnails pop up, but when I click one, it doesn't open; it just disappears. And if I click the actual icon itself, nothing happens if, say, two Chrome windows are open; I can't maximize either of them.

As soon as I restart the PC, all these problems vanish, and everything works normally again for a few hours. It’s silly, but it's frustrating having to constantly reboot after only a short amount of time—sometimes this starts happening after just 5 or 6 hours.

I searched Google, but I couldn't find anyone else with a similar issue, let alone a solution.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

What are the temperatures like in the PC after those few hours of use? You might want to check using some software like SpeedFan (http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php). At first glance, I guess this looks like it might be an issue with the graphics card.
How old is the computer, and when was the last time you cleaned out the dust?
Also—is this a laptop or a desktop?

Did you maybe manually adjust the fan curve using the override function in the AMD tool?

You can't close threads on your own here.
It might be helpful if you shared what actually fixed the issue—just so others running into this later know what to do.
Regarding the wattage—yeah, it should be enough for that Graphics card. You just need to make sure you have an extra 6-pin power supply connector for it, assuming it’s the same one shown in this picture:
http://forum.oktabit.gr/files/asus_eah4830_3D.jpg

As for the build quality on this Microsoft power supply, I probably wouldn't recommend it.
It’s probably not about the wattage itself—it’s more that the unit is just low quality. I guess if you picked up something with an actual Bronze certification (like an EVGA or an AMD model) with the same rating, it would work perfectly fine.

Edit: My bad, I misread your link at first and thought that power supply was 450 W. If I'm seeing this right, it's actually a 350 W unit. You should probably look for something at least 400 W—though I'd personally recommend aiming for 450W.

I'm thinking the issue might actually be with the motherboard 🤷

Hey,

Which specific app are we talking about, and what OS are you using? There are honestly endless versions of Texas Holdem out there on just about every device.

I’m guessing you mean Meta or maybe Zynga Poker on a PC—unless I've got that wrong?

Using my phone as a webcam (help!) in IT Support ·
Did you make sure to open the port the app uses (4747) on both your router and the macOS firewall?

Regarding the version—the desktop version for macOS seems to be some generic 6.X.X build, while the App Store lists it as 6.1, so I don't really think that's the issue here. I'm not an app developer, so I can't say for certain if this error message might pop up for other reasons too, I guess.

How did you try connecting your phone to your computer? Was it wired—like via USB—or wireless, maybe using WiFi or Bluetooth?
Issues with my USB flash drive? in IT Support ·
So, it's probably not an issue with the USB flash drive itself, but rather the card reader.--
