External drives not being recognized in IT Support ·
Alexander James15 said:I'm not entirely sure if this option even exists on Windows 8, but I’m sitting here at my desk working on my Windows 7 machine and I can't find that menu anywhere. I tried digging through the Control Panel, but it was a dead end. It just says "No items match your search."

Just right-click on "This PC," select "Manage," and you'll land right in Computer Management. Both Device Manager and Disk Management are located right there.
On Windows 8, I'm pretty sure you just need to hit the Windows key and X at the same time, then grab Disk Management from the menu that pops up.

Alexander James15 said:What exactly do you mean when you say "disk management"?

It’s the same deal as accessing Device Manager; just look further down the list for Disk Management. If the drive shows up there, try right-clicking it and selecting "Explore." If you can get into the files that way, just copy them over to another drive first, then go ahead and format the HDD.

Alexander James15 said:If I’m totally stuck on how to tackle both of these issues at once, does anyone have any advice on what to do with the drive? Is there some kind of software out there I could download that might actually be able to reach the disk—you know, the one that shows up fine in Device Manager but just won't show up anywhere else?

Can you get into the data through Disk Management? If you can, just back everything up somewhere else and then go ahead and format the HDD.
How to uninstall Linux in IT Support ·
Taylor Robinson3 said:I picked up a laptop that came pre-installed with Linux, and I want to wipe it and switch over to Windows. Just a heads-up, there’s no CD/DVD drive, so I’ve set it to boot from an external USB hard drive. I could really use some help getting this sorted out, especially since this is my first time ever dealing with Linux.
Thanks a lot

It’s basically the same situation as having a machine with free DOS. You just need to adjust the boot priority in the BIOS and then kick off the installation from your USB. Obviously, the USB drive has to be bootable.

I can't tell if this is a hardware issue or a software glitch—does anyone know what's going on? Please help.🙂🙂🙂

It’s possible the GPU drivers are the culprit. Try swapping them out and you'll see if the behavior changes.
swiftridge72 said:Let’s say the Recycle Bin takes up 5% of the drive capacity.

From what I gather, that 5% isn't sitting in one contiguous block on the disk; it's scattered all over the place, causing fragmentation that wouldn't be an issue if we didn't have a Recycle Bin in the first place.

And honestly, rather than messing around with all those maintenance utilities, it’s just easier to spend two hours every five years or so doing a clean format and a fresh OS install.

You basically answered your own question. Reinstalling the OS is the easiest path. You just create a system image, and whenever you feel the PC starting to lag, you roll back to that image. The problem is most people don't actually do that. They prefer to tinker and "fix" things instead.😉
4TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive in IT Support ·
Ryan Gonzalez4 said:The question is, why can't I transfer data faster than 20MB/s if it's supposedly USB 3.0? I thought maybe the bottleneck was just the speed of the Hard Drive I'm copying from, so I tested a 3.0 to 3.0 connection and it's still just as slow.

I noticed you can switch from “Quick removal” to Better performance, but honestly, that doesn't feel like much of a fix. I’m more interested in knowing why the speeds are this abysmal in the first place.

PC Specs:
Windows 8.1
MSI B75MA-E31
Intel i5 3570k 4.5GHz
Corsair h80
Corsair Vengeance 4x4GB DDR3 1600MHz
Corsair hx i850w
Gigabyte gtx 970 g1 gaming
500GB Samsung evo 850
2x Hard Drive 7.200rpm 1TB

The external Hard Drive in question is: Samsung M3 Portable 4 TB

Try checking "enable write caching" in that same menu where you switched to Better performance. 🙂
Windows Recovery is throwing an error in IT Support ·
Carl Carter90 said:So, I just finished installing Windows 7 Ultimate. Everything booted up perfectly and seems to be running without a hitch—except for one thing: the network card isn't working.🤔I can't get him online—not through Wi-Fi and not via Ethernet. It's probably just a matter of installing the drivers.
After that, I wiped the laptop and ran Windows Recovery.

Take a look at this http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Noteboo...r/td-p/3131865
There's a driver mentioned in the comments that should work for you. I'm thinking it's this one: http://h20566.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/p...105197_1&mode=
Just make sure the Hardware ID actually matches what's listed in the text.

Carl Carter90 said:Look, I’m not really the type to just throw in the towel. Once I get stubborn, I stick with it. :P
I finally found some time tonight to really dig into this laptop. I managed to nudge things forward from where they were stuck, but then I hit another wall 😵😵 ...I tracked down a Windows 7 Ultimate disc, but my BIOS wouldn't even list the internal DVD drive as a boot device, so I couldn't boot from it. I ended up grabbing an external USB DVD drive, which worked perfectly since the system recognized it as a bootable device. So, once that was done, I tried running a Windows Recovery. Everything seemed fine, and I was actually feeling pretty good about saving some cash 😁, but then everything went sideways. After the computer finished its routine, it gets to the "Starting Windows" screen, hangs there for a bit, and then moves to "is preparing your computer for first use." Right after that, the laptop just reboots itself and kicks me straight into the Windows Error Recovery window with the usual options:
-safe mode
-safe mode with networking
- safe mode with command prompt
- Last known good configuration
- start windows normally

No matter which one I pick, it just loops back to that "preparing for first use" stage and restarts again...
I have no idea if any of this info helps, or if anyone knows what could be causing it to crash right at that specific "preparing for first use" step 🤦😠🙂

I don't think I quite follow. Did you install Windows 7 Ultimate directly, or were you trying to run the Windows Recovery through it? 🤔
Windows Recovery is throwing an error in IT Support ·
Carl Carter90 said:Nope, it won't boot Windows at all—that’s the whole issue. I tried downloading this on my own PC.

Won't even load in Safe Mode? If that's the case, you're probably looking at a trip to a repair shop. If the OS actually boots, my suggestion would be to run an upgrade via the official Microsoft site to Windows 10. You shouldn't need a product key; the system should activate automatically.
Windows Recovery is throwing an error in IT Support ·
Carl Carter90 said:I tried downloading it, but it’s not working... whenever I enter the product key to start the download, it tells me it was pre-installed on the device (ERROR The
product key you entered appears to be for software pre-installed by the device manufacturer. Please contact the device manufacturer for software recovery options.)
Should I just download Windows from somewhere else and install it that way?

Is anyone actually even attempting to install Windows these days?
Windows Recovery is throwing an error in IT Support ·
Carl Carter90 As I have stated before:
Hey there,
I've been using my HP Latitude 5420 for about four years now. It came pre-installed with Windows 7 Home, which worked fine until about a month ago. Suddenly, the system refused to boot. My best guess? I was running a Windows update, the laptop wasn't plugged into the charger, it died mid-process, and now the OS is completely unresponsive. Maybe I'm wrong, but that seems like the most logical explanation for why it won't load anymore. I tried to run a recovery, but I just keep getting hit with these errors:
First, you're greeted by the Windows Recovery window, which just throws this useless error at you: "The data is invalid. : recoveryPartitionIndex == bootPartition."
And once I hit OK, this whole other window pops up labeled System Recovery Options, and it just tells me, "ERROR The installed program cannot start. Click OK to turn off the computer."
If anyone knows what’s going on here, please weigh in. I'm looking to see if this is something I can tackle myself or if I should just bite the bullet and drop it off at a repair shop. I wouldn't call myself an expert, but I'm certainly not a total amateur either. One more thing: if it turns out the issue is a corrupted recovery partition, can I actually request a fresh one from an authorized service center or the retailer? Since the machine was purchased with the recovery software pre-installed, I'm wondering what my options are there.
I've written quite a bit here, but only because I wanted to be as thorough as possible with my explanation.
If you need anything else, just let me know. I'm happy to provide more details.
Thanks in advance for the help.
👍

You don't even need to bother dragging your laptop to a repair shop; just download the right version of Windows and you're good to go.If you're looking to grab a copy of Windows 7, you can find the official download right here on Microsoft's site: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7You need to use the exact key that came with the laptop—it has to be the identical one because that’s what the license is tied to. Once you've burned it to a disc or loaded it onto a USB drive, just boot from there, run the repair, and you're done. After everything settles, you'll just need to activate Windows using your key. Honestly, online activation fails more often than it works, so be prepared to do it over the phone. I’ve been looking into this guide on how to handle system recovery via phone, and honestly, it’s worth a read if you find yourself stuck in a loop. It covers the steps for getting back into your OS when things go sideways, specifically focusing on using those built-in tools to bypass errors that usually leave you staring at a blank screen. The process is pretty straightforward, though it requires some patience. You basically have to trigger the recovery environment—similar to how you'd access Windows Recovery on an HP device—to get to the System Recovery Options. From there, you can attempt to repair the boot configuration or roll back to a previous state. If you're running an older setup like Windows 7 Home or even Windows 7 Ultimate, the menus look a bit different than what you'd see on Windows 10, but the logic remains the same: diagnose the failure, then apply the fix. One thing to keep in mind: if you're dealing with a specific Hardware ID error or a corrupted boot sector, sometimes the software fixes aren't enough. At that point, you're looking at deeper system repairs. It’s a methodical process, but if you follow the instructions carefully, you can usually avoid having to take your laptop to a shop like Best Buy just to get it booting again. Just be prepared for a few restarts.Naturally, when you're on that phone call, you just select America. 🙂

Lisa Perez50 said:Forgive me, I totally missed that part of the question. My wired speeds are absolutely fantastic. The max should be 30/5, but I'm actually getting 31/5.5. I ran a speed test right next to the modem on Wi-Fi and hit 30. But in my room, where my laptop has been sitting in the exact same spot for two years, it suddenly won't go above 18 Mbit/s. It used to hit 30. Clearly, the issue is either the modem or the laptop, even though the signal strength is showing full bars.

I think I might (and probably will) have to move this inquiry to a different thread.

It isn't 100% the computer; I spent nearly two months dealing with this headache. My wireless speeds were constantly dropping, so I kept calling customer service, only to hear the same tired script every single time (did you try this, did you do that, is the router too far away, let's change the channel, etc.). Interestingly, back when I was using Terastream (HT), I never had any issues with speed drops, even though everything was in the same physical location. During the last call, I finally got a technician on the phone who actually knew what they were doing, and he solved the problem (WiFi at 65 Mbit, LAN at 100 Mbit). It is quite amusing, however, how my phones never yield the same results as my computer (on mobile, the speed won't break 40 Mbit). Regards.

Lisa Perez50 said:I changed the broadcast channel and the speed jumped to 20 Mbit/s, but my phone is still reading 31 Mbit/s even though the max is supposed to be 30 Mbit/s. It's pretty obvious there's some kind of malware or something on the laptop. 😠 What programs should I run to clean this out? Or how do I undo those icon settings I messed with? 🤣

Back to the same question again: is the speed higher over Ethernet? If it is, then we know the issue isn't with the computer itself.

Lisa Perez50 said:Out of nowhere this morning, I hit a download 9. I turned off Windows update (all my drivers are current), and suddenly I'm seeing a download 15. My max is supposed to be 30, and when I test via my phone, I get 31. Why the sudden change? I'm stumped.

Try plugging the computer directly into the router if you haven't already. It’s possible the Wi-Fi channels are acting up—your ISP should probably be the one explaining that part to you. I dealt with something similar at home with Xfinity where my Wi-Fi speeds would tank from 20 Mbps down to 2 Mbps until I finally switched over to an Ethernet cable.

Check your settings and make sure Windows update delivery optimization is turned off. You can find that under Windows update settings, then advanced, and finally choose how updates are delivered. Also, it’s probably worth making sure all your network drivers are fully updated in the Device Manager.

Lisa Perez50 said:Hey there.

I'm running Windows 10. Here's the deal: every single time I boot up my laptop, my desktop icons are a complete mess, scattered all over the place. At first, I figured it was because I don't just use the laptop screen—I have an external monitor plugged in constantly. It stays connected 24/7, no exceptions. But even so, every time the system restarts, the icons are thrown everywhere without any logic. If it were just a resolution or screen size issue, they'd at least stay grouped together, right? Instead, they're just totally disorganized.

Is this some kind of malware causing the headache? What should I do to fix this?

Check this out: http://www.askvg.com/fix-desktop-ico...in-windows-10/ It breaks down everything regarding this specific issue in detail, and there's even a video tutorial here:

Hopefully, that solves it.

It just spits out a list of drivers and kicks me right back to the boot options menu.

You’re going to need an installation disc to fix this, assuming it isn't a hardware failure. Might be a silly question, but do you have any USB drives plugged into the PC while it's booting? If so, try pulling them out first.

The video was too massive to upload, so I just grabbed screenshots of the important parts.

Doesn't matter which mode I pick, the result is always the same. The Windows logo pops up, a blue screen flashes for a fraction of a second, and then it's right back to the initial image. Just a continuous loop.

Try booting into Safe Mode to see if you can identify which specific driver is causing the hang (assuming it actually lets you in). I ran into a nearly identical issue on two old desktop builds a while back; turns out Avast was the culprit preventing Windows from loading properly. Once I wiped those problematic drivers—I think it was aswrvrt.sys—Windows booted up without any issues at all.
