ambergull said:Greetings, I find myself facing a bit of a dilemma.

For the past few days, whenever I boot up my PC, I am greeted by a BSOD stating: "A problem has occurred and Windows has shut down to prevent damage."

The error message also indicates whether this is the first time the system has crashed since booting; if it is, I simply restart the machine... At which point, everything seems to function perfectly fine for the remainder of the day until I eventually power it down. Then, come the next morning, the exact same cycle repeats itself.

I am currently running Windows 10 Home. I haven't installed any new software recently, and I have already performed several scans using various antivirus and anti-spyware tools.

Does anyone have any insight into how I might resolve this?

Grab the little utility BlueScreen View http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html and run a scan with it. That should help you pinpoint exactly what's causing the crash—whether it's a driver, hardware failure, or a software conflict.

Lawrence Patel69 said:So, here’s the deal: yesterday, my laptop just straight-up died right in the middle of a movie. Now, if I try to boot it up without the power adapter plugged in, absolutely nothing happens—it’s dead. If I actually plug the charger in, it manages to kick on, but then I start hearing this weird buzzing sound, and the screen hits me with 😛Automatic Repair starting. Then, boom, it shuts itself off again. After that, it goes through this phase where it won't even attempt to turn on for a while. Any idea what kind of nightmare I'm dealing with here?

To me, this looks like a hardware failure. Has the machine been shutting down on you before? It’s possible the motherboard is acting up due to overheating—I actually dealt with a similar situation myself not too long ago.

I've already messed around with standard formatting, Disk Management, and various partition managers, but nothing seems to work. How do I fix this? Thanks in advance.

Quick USB shortcuts? in IT Support ·
quietmason31 said:I’ve been running into a bit of a headache with my USB drives lately. Every time I plug one in, instead of seeing my actual files, all I see is a shortcut icon appearing under my devices—and then I have to click through that shortcut just to find the actual contents of the drive.

The weird part is that this shortcut seems to "stick" to the drive itself; if I plug it into a different laptop, I run into the exact same issue. Either the drive won't open at all, or I'm once again stuck clicking through a shortcut just to get to my data.

It feels like there might be some specific setting in Windows I need to tweak to fix this behavior—does anyone know what it might be?

You likely caught a shortcut virus. Check out this video:
Having issues with my laptop in IT Support ·
velvetfalcon522 said:Hey everyone, I actually started a thread about laptop issues a little while back. This is the second time this has happened, and the machine isn't even a year old. It's an HP Pavilion dv7 running Windows 7. Yesterday, I went to check My Computer and realized the D drive—where I keep all my files—was just gone. It only shows the main C drive. I try to bring the partition back, but as soon as I restart, it vanishes again.

Try heading into Disk Management. If you see the partition listed there, try manually changing the drive letter (switch it from D to something like E).
That might do the trick. 🙂
macOS update-failed in IT Support ·

as soon as I entered it into the command prompt

it claims the macOS update-failed cannot be stopped....

You could head over to Services and attempt to kill the process there, or if that fails to work, just reboot the machine and try again after the restart.

Jason Hall said:Hi everyone,

I’m dealing with a seriously sluggish computer...

I’ve tried a few things to fix it, but I suspect a major part of the issue stems from a backlog of updates just sitting there waiting to be installed...

I have about 11 critical ones and 15 miscellaneous updates pending...

I'm attempting to run them now (though looking at my history, they've been stuck for months)...

The problem is the installation process itself takes forever; maybe one finally goes through, but the rest—mostly those security patches for Windows 7—keep failing repeatedly.

Does anyone have any insight on this?

Thanks in advance.

"rowdybadger18" gave me a link for some XP drivers, but I can't find anything specifically for her Inspiron 1501 model on that site.

rowdybadger18 isn't around to answer you right now because they unfortunately got banned, but you can grab those specific drivers right here http://www.downloadlaptopdrivers.net...r-windows.html

Can you still launch programs from the taskbar? If so, you might want to try deleting the iconcache.db file and then restarting explorer.exe.

urbancyclist8 said:I’m running into issues with Microsoft again. Ever since I did a Reset Chrome, everything seems fine except for the fact that I can't load certain sites (Gmail, Facebook, etc.). For instance, whenever I try to access my Gmail, I get this message:
"This Connection is Untrusted
You have asked Chrome to connect securely to mail.google.com, but we can't confirm that your connection is secure.

Normally, when you try to connect securely, sites will present trusted identification to prove that you are going to the right place. However, this site's identity can't be verified.
What should I do

If you usually connect to this site without problems, this error could mean that someone is trying to impersonate the site, and you shouldn't continue.

This site uses HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) to specify that Chrome only connect to it securely. As a result, it is not possible to add an exception for this certificate."

What am I supposed to do here?

Might be a stupid question, but check if your computer's date and time are set correctly. If they aren't, fix them.

Locked out of my PC—forgot my password! in IT Support ·
placidowl7 said:Hey everyone,
So, I got this new PC and I haven't touched it in like a month, and now I'm totally locked out because I forgot my password. I was checking some stuff on YouTube, and it seems like most people say you should just jump into Safe Mode and use CMD, or maybe grab a Windows installation disc.
The thing is, I found a workaround code, but even Safe Mode is asking me for a password. 😢
And when I tried to just reinstall Windows, it wouldn't even let me in.
I guess if anyone could help me out, that would be awesome.

Thanks!

Cheers,

This is probably one of the most straightforward ways to handle it.

Just download UBCD (it's free) onto a disc, boot from it, and follow the instructions. 🙂
Can't remove the "read-only" attribute in IT Support ·
David Gomez6 said:Hey,

I was doing a Windows reinstallation and moved all my essential .txt files onto a secondary hard drive—not the one running the OS.

Now that the reinstall is finished, the computer is telling me that the entire folder is set to read-only.

Naturally, I went into properties, unchecked the box, hit apply, and selected "apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files."
-Then it asks for admin permission, so I just click continue.
-It runs through the process, but the folders stay stuck on read-only :/.

I am obviously not going to manually copy the contents of every single file since we are talking about: 23,095 Files and 3,753 Folders.
I tried copying the whole folder over to the C: partition (where Windows lives)... attempted to uncheck the read-only attribute there too... and the exact same thing happens. It runs the process, but nothing actually changes :/

What the hell is messing with this? To make matters worse, these files are critical. I could theoretically scrape them together from a thousand different places, but I refuse to believe I'm getting screwed over by something this basic.

Try setting yourself as the administrator. You can also grant yourself full control permissions for a specific file or an entire folder; after that, things should work fine.

It works fine on Mozilla,
but on Internet Explorer, absolutely nothing. I have Google.com set as my default, yet it keeps insisting on using the .de domain.
🤷

Edit: As soon as I restarted Mozilla—it switched right back to the .de domain there too.
