Jokes about Romani people in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Mark Cruz15 said:Lee, there’s plenty of jokes out there targeting every major religious, ethnic, or racial group imaginable.

I'm not disputing that point, but what I find absolutely infuriating is this double standard where you aren't even allowed to call certain religious or ethnic groups on this forum anything remotely insulting without someone losing their mind.

I honestly find it exhausting when people start throwing around labels like that without a second thought.

As long as these American public forums continue to tolerate and actually promote this specific brand of humor—where someone is essentially reduced to a punchline just because of their ethnicity—then yes, I suppose we have a problem.🤷
It really is the lowest form of wit imaginable, and frankly, there are far too many reasons why it shouldn't be encouraged, though perhaps the most glaring reason is how much it degrades the people actually telling the jokes; they really ought to be taught better.

neonfox12 said:Your logic is completely flawed; just look at how we joke about people from Kentucky—since that's where I'm from—and you'll see I'm not the one starting this.

Do you honestly believe blue-collar workers or cops actually enjoy being the punchline of those jokes?

You can't force humor into the mold of political correctness because that’s nothing more than an assault on the fundamental right to have an opinion. People are free to think whatever they want about minorities or any other group in America; you can't just label every thought as offensive or a sign of low intelligence.

Certain communities have lived a certain way for centuries, and now you expect everyone who went to college to just magically erase those realities from their minds? That kind of thing doesn't happen overnight.

The fact that someone from that background could win a massive national reality competition through a popular vote proves that there is significant appreciation for them, even if some people claim otherwise.

Dark humor can be distasteful, certainly, but it remains humor rather than a direct insult.

How you personally feel about anyone is entirely irrelevant to this discussion.
The core issue is that if we are going to patronize these groups by insisting on strict order and adherence to rules, then those rules need to apply to absolutely everyone equally, or we might as well embrace total anarchy where anything goes.
I am simply advocating for clear, established rules.
Or don't have them at all.

Nicole Johnson20 said:Look, please stop clogging up this thread; this isn't some official Congressional hearing transcript. Go find another corner of the internet to vent in so we can actually have a discussion here.

I truly hope you aren't aiming that at me, because while I have absolutely no desire to clutter up your precious little space, I feel an undeniable compulsion to speak up, especially since I witnessed the exact same pattern of behavior in that thread about migrant communities in Chicago, where after I voiced my concerns, the moderators just half-heartedly scrubbed a few controversial posts without punishing anyone and then simply shut the whole thing down.

Nicole Johnson20 said:I honestly have no clue, which is exactly why I decided to come here and ask.

If someone’s idea of peak comedy is some crude joke about defecating and then throwing an ethnic slur in there just for a cheap laugh, then in my view, it’s a glaring indicator of a remarkably low IQ—though I'll refrain from being more blunt to avoid being flagged for harassment.

So, I am checking with the moderators to see if this kind of thing actually belongs on a public forum.

What kind of censorship regarding humor and free thought is this? Where on earth did you find this mindset? 🤷

By the way, I'm just popping in during a break while watching *Logan* (2017)—highly recommend it if you haven't seen it!

I want to jump in and support this small but vital protest, especially since this isn't the first time I've encountered this specific type of prejudice toward the Roma community on this forum.
I work extensively with Roma children, and quite frequently when I have to issue a sanction because they've messed up, they resort to the argument that I'm only doing it because they are Roma.
While it might be considered "normal" on an American forum to have jokes where a stereotype is used as a punchline, we shouldn't suppress humor while simultaneously applying a completely arbitrary standard that doesn't apply to everyone; for instance, the most basic example is that you can call a Roma person a name just because of their ethnicity, yet you aren't allowed to jokingly change a politician's name without facing a penalty, not to mention the rules against insulting other national groups, and as long as the forum remains such an inconsistent space for discourse and wit, America will remain a deeply fractured society where certain groups feel justified in their resentment because of how they are treated, and others feel justified in their hostility.
The Roma people I know are incredibly intelligent and resourceful, and if they truly set their minds to it, they could outmaneuver any frustrated American looking for a fight.
Therefore, any humor involving the Roma needs to be far more sophisticated than what the average American is clearly capable of producing, and I fear even the Roma themselves are aware of that reality.
It strikes me that the most incredibly cool people always seem to congregate right here in the weight loss threads ☕

Honestly, if anything, dustycanyon5 being this dense just serves as the ultimate proof of David Lynch's genius, because even he wouldn't be embarrassed by such a ridiculous analogy.

dustycanyon5, just admit you didn't even watch the movie and only saw that article on nytimes.com before coming here to whine for no reason. 👎 Just come clean and get it over with. 🤷

It’s truly touching, really.
Those piercing blue eyes of his. I remember wanting to reach out through the screen while I was wandering the digital void, just wasting time and posting nonsense in the middle of the night.
He even went as far as to drop that ridiculous little poem about a folding vagina. 😁

Give me a break.

Tudume, if this place is doing you that much harm, then just walk away. Just go. I've walked away a hundred times myself. Go hug your dog and find some love.
Go take a stroll through a park and look at the stars.
Maybe we'll cross paths again, assuming I can still make sense of what you're saying. Or better yet, just forget this thread ever existed and come bother me with the usual nonsense over on MK.
I actually appreciate it when people listen.

Fear of commitment: Is it irrational or just me? in Psychology ·
Amanda Reed6 said:Oh, really? Is it actually impossible without loans? I wouldn't go that far. And I’m not even talking about the specific stuff I listed—I mean more of a general gut instinct when any topic involving commitment comes up. It’s like that whole "Oh, I love dogs, but a pet is such a huge responsibility since you have to walk them" vibe. People use that exact same logic to dodge every major life obligation and responsibility out there.

Look, let's be real: we live better now than ever before. No one can convince me otherwise. We are where we are because our ancestors survived millions of years of famine and disease just to reproduce, yet today we claim things are "too hard" and we can't afford to be independent.

I look at my grandparents. They barely finished middle school, but my grandpa worked his tail off to support my mom and her sister through law school. Both of them stayed home until they were 35 because they didn't want the "burden" of responsibilities. To me, it doesn't seem like they couldn't do it; it seems like they just wouldn't. And honestly, it makes me wonder why.

Has our standard of living climbed so high that we're too embarrassed to admit it? It’s like, "I can't afford marriage and kids," but they aren't actually worried about kids going hungry or living in poverty—they're worried they won't have enough left over for skiing trips, summer vacations, or getting a brand-new iPhone every six months. That's the reality.

I completely understand your perspective, but we are the ones who shaped them this way, and they were more than happy to accept the terms.
Comfort in exchange for freedom—is there any worse trade-off? 🙂 Especially since it absolutely numbs the brain.

It feels like there isn't, though I'm certainly not the best judge of these things given my own flaws.

I just want to point out that accountability never actually lands on their shoulders, nor does it ever truly rest with us. We’ve been screwed over by every single administration that came before this one, yet somehow, somehow, they still manage to dodge the blame. Honestly, it’s hard to even wrap my head around how much of a mess we're in. 🙄 🙂

That’s an interesting topic you've raised.
The truth is, life might be easier that way, though I suppose there's another side to the argument.
Regardless, there are far more pressing, existential matters to contemplate in this world than someone in their twenties worrying about how they'll put food on the table.
God forbid anyone has to deal with that. 👎 😁
The fact that many people still rely on their parents for financial security well into adulthood proves that life has never been easier, despite how much everyone else tries to convince us otherwise.
I honestly can't decide if that's a bad thing or not.

Since we are discussing this specific artist, let them go to hell for all I care.

nimblelynx7 said:It’s actually pretty straightforward, even if it doesn't seem that way initially. You likely sat through some mandatory OSHA safety training during your onboarding—it’s usually just a box-ticking exercise in most places, but at my company, it’s the foundation for everything we do.

Every single person who walks through our doors has to undergo job-specific training. My entire role is to facilitate that process, ensuring everyone actually knows what they're doing so they can be productive.

So, you're basically the one running the OSHA compliance tests. Got it. 🙂

nimblelynx7 said:Part of my job involves training employees—specifically, making sure everyone has the technical skills, legal certifications, and general competence required to do their jobs from day one until they leave the company. It doesn't matter if I'm dealing with tradespeople like electricians and locksmiths or professionals like lawyers and accountants.

The whole process kicks off at hiring, and frankly, we’re starting from zero. Most of what they bring from school is practically nothing. They’re stuffed full of useless theory, yet you can't even hand them a tool without fearing they'll hurt themselves. They have zero hands-on experience; most things they've only ever seen in a textbook or a picture.

I tell them all the same thing: the faster you forget everything you learned in class and actually open your eyes and use your brain, the better off we'll all be. You can't leave them unsupervised for a single second—they're a liability to themselves and everyone else around them.

I could go on for hours about the experiences I've had. Some are hilarious, some are grim, and some are just straight-up unbelievable.

I've never bothered with writing instruction manuals, though I do occasionally put together seminars, theses, and similar documents.

I’m still struggling to wrap my head around what kind of job this actually is; how on earth do you train an electrician, a locksmith, and a lawyer all at once?

nimblelynx7 said:My kid isn't even in school yet.

My interest in this topic doesn't stem from being a parent. It comes from the unfortunate reality of my career, where I see the flaws in our entire educational system firsthand. I’m actively involved in trying to fix it, and frankly, what I see is unbelievable.

It gives me chills to think that one day, my child will be forced into a system like this.
To think they'll go to school just to provide job security for teachers, rather than actually learning how to survive on their own.
To think the survival of the bureaucracy matters more than actual learning.
When I realize that in this system, my child is nothing more than an afterthought—that everything else takes precedence over them—it makes me sick. And as for those people complaining about my posts here? Honestly, I couldn't care less.

I wouldn't want to drag you into a debate about education, but I am genuinely curious what kind of job involves directly fixing the flaws in the school system—if you don't mind me asking. Are you a tutor or something?
Just so we’re clear, I was the one who caught that French film over at AMC Theatres.
I actually caught onto that back in 2013, if you can believe it. 🧐 😁 Look.

It truly is quite bizarre that you’ve allowed a pack of absolute degenerates to take over the sports section of this forum, suddenly becoming the dominant force simply because you let them run wild.
