I suspect your buddy might have been talking about getting three GPUs worth of value back then, but let's be real for a second.

The next generation brought us the GTX 970 ~ RX 280.

You can pick up a used 280X for around $100--$400(and that's even with a warranty).

If you're obsessed with speed compared to your old setup, you shouldn't be stressing over some random number in the Windows experience...

An Intel build, specifically an i5 4460.

In my opinion, is $43 worth paying for an extra year of warranty

You could grab the HyperX Cloud II, but looking at Best Buy, it’s priced almost the same as the EVGA 550 W1. I’m guessing the HyperX is being priced under the current high dollar exchange rate, while the EVGA is just old stock being cleared out at the previous price point—meaning it'll likely hit about $183
soon.

XFX is quieter, while Gigabyte stays cooler. They're just minor differences—doesn't really matter much.

If you're looking at USA brands regarding power supplies—which CPU are you pairing it with?

He might be better off sticking with an Intel Dual Core + a dedicated graphics card right out of the gate if he's looking to play those older titles and strategy games. It’ll give him more punch and much higher FPS from day one.

If his plan is to dive into newer games down the road, then grabbing the quad-core now and picking up a GPU later might be the smarter move.

Anyone can do that; it's just that people are intimidated by computers and act like they're some kind of alien technology.

Anyway, I've already got this sorted out.

The old Walmart over in Indianapolis is absolute gold.
The guy is incredibly honest and his prices are super fair...

Thanks to everyone for the help...

How much did he charge you?
You could have just grabbed one for about $40 on Amazon and installed it yourself (way easier).

That’s a dead end. It’ll be obsolete like floppy disks before you know it.

Anyway, I believe I already mentioned this to you (at least to my face).

Ultimately, those 3.5GB limits aren't actually a dealbreaker (at least for now) click.

The real issue here is that they lied about the specs—and not just regarding the VRAM. They’ve seriously damaged their reputation and lost the trust of a huge portion of their fanbase, which is a much bigger problem than any hardware limitation.

I have one Gigabyte GA-B85M-DS3H motherboard featuring the LGA 1150 socket and an Intel ® B85 chipset.
Here’s what I’ve got on hand: one Gigabyte GTX960 WF2 Overclocked featuring 2GB of GDDR5 memory, equipped with DVI-I, DVI-D, and HDMI outputs.
1 x Seagate 1TB HDD, SATA III, 7200 rpm, ST1000DM003
I’ve got a single 4GB stick of Kingston DDR3 memory here—1600MHz with CL11 latency, part of their Value line.
Power Supply: FORTRON 500W, HEXA plus 500, featuring a 12cm fan.
Thermaltake V4 Black edition, VM30001W2Z, Middle Tower, 9.9 lbs
1 x SCYTHE Slip Stream Slim 120mm 1200 rpm, 21.71 dBA / 24.03 CFM

$1870 AMD

I stretched my budget by about $100 and pulled this build together. Now comes the big question: should I just pull the trigger right now, or wait it out and hope prices drop?🤔

Honestly, the i5-4570 just isn't worth the extra cash when you look at the i5-4440 or the i5-4460. It’s like paying a premium for a luxury sedan when a reliable mid-sized SUV gets you exactly where you need to go for much less. Save your money.
That graphics card isn't even worth two cents. You're much better off picking up an XFX R9-280A-TDFD for around $200.$100 It’s not exactly a weaker performer—not by any significant margin, anyway—it just pulls a bit more power from the outlet.
You might find that having 8 GB of RAM would be necessary for your needs.
Honestly, buying Thermaltake cases just isn't worth the money.

When it comes to RAM, there really aren't any "good" or "bad" brands if that's what you're getting at; it's all more or less the same thing. Any company that was destined to fail in the PC industry went under a long time ago.

Exactly, if you aren't using it for gaming,
just pull that Radeon out and plug your monitor directly into the motherboard's VGA port...

Check page 42 of your motherboard's manual here:

Onboard VGA
Enables or disables the onboard VGA function.
Enable If no Ext PEG
Activates the onboard VGA only if no PCI Express VGA card is installed. (Default)
Always Enable
Always activates the onboard VGA, whether or not a PCI Express card is installed. If you wish to
set up a dual view configuration, set this item to Always Enable.

Doesn't your motherboard already have it built-in? Why would you even bother with a separate card...

I'm heading into New York City this Monday, so I can pay for and pick up the PC then...

By the way, are you aware they actually have to build that PC for you? It isn't a pre-built configuration.
Why even make the trip for that? You could just order it online and pay via cash on delivery...

Instead of the Radeon RX 260 x, you might actually find better performance from a newer Radeon RX 350 x or even a GTX 950. 🤷

Half of those components probably won't even be...

Roger Mitchell4 said:Like what, for example? Regarding prices, I have my doubts because I've been checking various forums, and people are saying costs will climb as the dollar strengthens, making manufacturing more expensive!
If that's what you meant 😁

And what you just described isn't really a change at all 🤣
