That’s tough... since they’re using the exact same chips, I'd assume their max overclock would be pretty much identical. Where did you actually run into that info?
If the software can actually tap into 8 or more cores, the FX might be roughly equal to—or maybe even slightly better than—the Intel Core i7. And that’s assuming you aren't overclocking, plus the processor costs twice as much. 😉
If you're looking to play modern games on high or ultra settings, I guess you don't really need an Intel Core i7; an i5 or an FX 8320 would probably be a more cost-effective move.
If he spends most of his time playing WoW, those 8 cores aren't going to do much for him. I guess the FX 8320 / FX 8350 is just slower than an i3 when it comes to WoW.

I guess you should go with Intel, since there are just a few games where AMD really struggles. The graphics card should be plenty for Ultra settings too.
You could always grab 8GB of RAM, though that bumps the price up by about $67:
Then again, wow isn't exactly a RAM hog, so whatever works for you.😉
The price might even drop a bit more $39 if you skip the disc drive...
Honestly, I’d probably go with the $283 Pentium G4560 + H110 combo with 4GB of RAM for about $283 instead of dropping 400-$150 on an old s775 quad core. 🙂
The G1820 is actually slightly better than an E8400, 8500, or 8600.
Plus, you actually have the option to upgrade to some beastly s1150 processor later on.
I guess the real question is whether you're running a SATA HDD or if you're still stuck with (P)ATA...
Well, you could probably start by checking $1500 on Craigslist 😬 though, since I guess about 90% of people there just jack up their prices for no reason. If you can't get them down, go for it, but personally, I wouldn't pay less than $1333 🙂
Anyway, I just put together a brand new build at the shop that’s actually a bit better than yours, and it comes out to $1677. So, I guess a fair price for your setup would be a little north of $1333... 😉
The processor is going to be a massive bottleneck here, but honestly, this is probably your best bet. It’s low on power consumption, and you can actually repurpose it later if you decide to upgrade your rig—maybe to something like a Celeron G1820 with 4GB of DDR3 RAM.
If that’s still pushing your budget too far, I guess you could look for something used, like an HD 6670 or an HD 5670. Anything lower than the cards in the link above is basically just overpriced junk.😁
You just need a SATA port on your motherboard—ideally SATA3 (6Gb/s) if you want to actually hit the full potential of an Intel drive, but that’s basically it.
EDIT: I guess that pretty much covers everything.😁
I guess Fernando Alonso just tried to push it a little too early. In conditions like these where everyone’s braking points and lines change so much, it's pretty risky to dive into someone's gearbox right before a turn—you just can't predict what the guy ahead is going to do.
