When is the 14nm Intel CPU coming out? in Desktops ·
I don't think Intel is going to deliver any massive leaps on the CPU side; they seem way more focused on the integrated graphics right now. They might shave off 5-10W and potentially fix those overheating issues we saw with Haswell, but honestly, you should probably just expect a 5-10% bump at the same clock speeds, nothing more.

Ever since AMD stepped away from the high-end segment for a bit, Intel hasn't really felt the pressure to push the CPU further, which is why performance has basically been idling since Sandy Bridge back in 2011.

I’m on the same page as Kimberly Gomez34 and fadedorca66... honestly, the chip itself is just too weak and doesn't have enough cores to actually handle serious gaming. The amount of VRAM on the card pretty much doesn't matter unless you're trying to run multiple displays.

If you go with $1267 an Intel Core i5-3470 paired with an R9 270X and overclock it, that GPU is going to be about 4 or 5 times more powerful than what you've got.

EDIT: Even an Intel Core i3-4130 would fit into that equation; I didn't even bother looking at the higher-end builds. 😉

Broadwell should probably hit the market in Q4 2014 using the 14nm process, though I guess Skylake might end up getting pushed back to Q1 2016.

There are a few decent deals out there:

Since the power supply is modular, you can just unplug any cables you don't need, which helps keep things tidy. I guess the i5 should be plenty; most Adobe apps—except maybe Lightroom—don't really demand a ton of cores, so a quad-core with decent single-core speed seems fine. Plus, putting Windows and your main apps on an SSD will make the whole system fly.

I went with Windows 8.1, but you could always go with Windows 7 if you prefer... whatever works for you.
Which PSU should I buy? in Desktops ·
It should work fine, though you'll probably need a case where the PSU sits at the top since the CPU cable might be too short otherwise—unless you're working with a low-profile mATX case. Also, I think it only comes with a 4-pin EPS cable for the CPU, so if your motherboard requires an 8-pin, you’ll likely need an adapter.
Used PC builds: What are they worth? in Desktops ·
It might pass for a $83 power supply, I guess... though if you're looking at something brand new, it’ll probably run a bit north of $133, so... plus, prices on used power supplies tend to drop pretty fast.
Used PC builds: What are they worth? in Desktops ·
I guess it'll do the job, provided you push the overclock pretty hard 😉

🤣

Mind if I ask what you actually do on your PC? 😁

Because you just listed how much, $1667? ...for the exact same thing. I mean, the gap between an Intel Core i7-2600 and an Intel Core i7-3770K is basically nothing—maybe 5-10%. The only real difference is if you're planning on heavy overclocking, but even then, you could just swap out the motherboard or find someone willing to trade an unlocked Intel Core i7-2600K (though you'd probably have to pay $33 extra).

In 99% of cases, you won't even notice the difference.

Unless you're planning on picking up an Intel Core i7-4930K or an Intel Core i7-4960X, I guess it’s pretty much a dead end, just like the others were saying.
Budget PC build under $300? in Desktops ·
If you’re looking to stretch your budget, maybe check out Best Buy or a similar big-box retailer for a setup with a G1820 paired with a GTX 1050 Ti. Since that GPU is a significant step up from an old R7 250, you might actually be able to handle some newer, more demanding titles.

Maybe an Intel Core i3 1 x ASUS Motherboard desktop H61? I guess.
It looks like we have an Intel Core i3 1 x ASUS Motherboard desktop H61 on the table here. It’s an mATX retail unit featuring a Socket 1155, DDR3 support, SATA II, PS/2, USB 2.0, VGA, DVI, LAN, audio Line-In, audio Line-Out, and Microphone-In. I guess that covers all the basics.
Just one stick of 4GB Transcend DDR3 memory, 1333MHz (part number JM1333KLH-4G), bulk packaging.
Just one Toshiba 500GB hard drive, 7200rpm, with 32MB cache.
Just one NaviaTec MATX PC case for sale. No power supply included.
Just one Chicony HPA-350W power supply.
Just one Sapphire R7 250 Boost, 1GB GDDR5.

Total: $671 Futura-IT

Free shipping and assembly included... I didn't include the griddle, but you could probably just pick up a used one pretty easily; people don't really use those things much anymore anyway. 🙂

The ASUS H81M-VG4 actually comes equipped with both SATA 3.0 and USB 3.0. 😉

I’d honestly suggest picking up an Intel Core i3-4130 and an H81 board for $367 instead of that used i5 and motherboard combo priced at $300. I guess the i3 actually has much better single-thread performance.

I think the Intel Celeron CPU 420 1.60GHz would actually be the better bet here, mostly because its architecture is miles ahead of the other one:

http://ark.intel.com/products/27115/...Hz-533-MHz-FSB

Even with a 1GHz clock speed deficit, the 420 model seems superior. It pulls almost three times less power, too—it really comes down to efficiency per Hz. I guess the 420 can just crunch through way more instructions.

Then again, by today's standards, all of this is still incredibly slow. 😉

Even those games would probably struggle on your setup. You’d likely need at least a Pentium 4 running at a similar clock speed just to get them to run smoothly on low settings.

I guess you should set aside about $500, assuming you have a hard drive with a SATA connector, if you actually want a decent gaming experience.

My Seagate power supply isn't working... 😉

I guess overclocking would be pretty much mandatory if you're trying to get any real performance out of those recommended cards, since the i7 920 is a total bottleneck—it’s just probably too weak for them.
