.....Man, 🙂Lisa Davis46
, seeing this go down at 11:59 PM with such an obviously favored candidate... it’s honestly soul-crushing. It just drains the life out of you.
.....Why on earth did I even sit down and write such a massive wall of text in the first place?.....🙄🙄

Advice for the Young at Heart. It’s such a classic sentiment, isn't it? It reminds me of those old jazz standards where everything feels timeless and a little bit bittersweet. It's like finding a vintage vinyl in a dusty corner of a shop in New York City—unexpected, yet exactly what you needed.

With all due respect, I really feel like this legendary album deserves a much more detailed and thorough breakdown—especially if it doesn't end up taking the top spot as Album of the Week.

For now, let's just count it as one voice. 😉

Recorded and mixed at Trident Studios, December 1982.
With thanks to Stevo, Jane, Marion, Stuart.

During those first few years of their career, the band was—to put it bluntly—totally locked into their own world. They were unapologetically following a very specific path, exploring the sonic landscapes of their home city. They’d find inspiration in the abandoned industrial plants, empty warehouses, and hollowed-out factories where the ghostly echoes of metal-on-metal structures seemed to hang in the air. It was raw, it was gritty, and it was entirely their own.

After successfully landing John Robie to handle a remix for the 1982 12" Yashar, they started catching eyes in circles they hadn't touched before. That’s when the legendary Stevo from Some Bizzare came up with a clever little strategy. He wanted to bridge the gap between their experimental vision and the more commercial electronic waves sweeping through the US in the early 80s. Essentially, he helped "smooth out" that piercing, jagged sound just enough to make it accessible. With some heavy financial backing from their new label, Virgin Records, they dove into recording The Crackdown. This LP was really their big leap toward the kind of mainstream recognition they eventually enjoyed during their peak years from 1983 to 1987.

Sometimes (Dr. Hirsch)

Angel no

It’s tough to pick just one standout from all those early sonic adventures. It's like choosing a favorite slice of pizza—they're all good! Especially considering their first decade was objectively their strongest era. But if you really sit down and dig through the material—singles, LPs, the whole lot—one record truly rises above the rest because of how cohesive and atmospheric it feels. To me, that masterpiece is definitely Stella from 1985.

Even if you set aside those massive, iconic singles—the kind that basically became cult classics overnight—there are tracks here where Blank proves exactly why he’s a true master of his craft. He shows off everything he knows.

I'm thinking specifically of the sonically devastating and lyrically brilliant Domingo, the hypnotic pull of Sometimes (Dr. Hirsch), and the closing Angel no. For those of us who grew up with it, Angel no always brings back memories of being the background music for Top-40 countdowns on Friday nights back when we used to listen to local rock stations.

Looking back at the musical landscape of the last twenty years, we've seen countless attempts by record labels to breathe new life into old catalogs via so-called "remastered" editions. Honestly, many of these fall flat due to various flaws—mainly in audio quality—and often face heavy criticism from fans who are just hungry for fresh takes on unreleased gems or polished versions of their favorites.

One of the rare series of remasters that actually earned universal praise was the Yello 80s remaster series released in 2005.
Under the careful eye and direction of Boris Blank, this album (along with the others in the series) received the best possible treatment. They sound better than ever, whether you're listening on basic headphones or high-end gear meant for serious audiophiles.

It's nothing less than what they deserve, after all.

Gerald Jackson48 said:I’ve always found the Ministry catalog fascinating, though I haven't done a deep dive into their entire discography. I got pretty hooked on that N.W.A. era and Jesus Built My Hotrod, eventually picking up an original CD of Glas.

Beyond the classic synth-pop staple With Sympathy, I think the Twitch era is easily the most intriguing part of their evolution. It was that perfect, high-energy transition into electro-industrial right before good old Al lost his way just a little bit (and honestly, he grew some teeth along the way)...IMHO...😛

I honestly don't see why we should put a cap on how many albums get suggested... especially when interest is picking up. It’s a dynamic thing—you can scale things up at any moment, though obviously, that comes with its own set of pros and cons.

It isn't like you have to sit there and listen to every single track on the list.

If you look at the suggestions, it's pretty easy to spot the rough outlines of what might actually grab your attention. You just need to zero in on those specific picks and leave the rest alone.

Gerald Jackson48 said:I’ve gotta give a quick shout-out to my friend analogbear40. The Sound It was a bit of a slow burn discovery for me, but I’ve found myself spinning this album several times already this week. Honestly? The sequencing is spot on. It flows perfectly.

To be perfectly honest... since I’ve always leaned more toward that polished, pure pop sound, I think I might actually prefer the mini-LP Shock of Daylight from '84. It just hits differently. Plus, it features my absolute favorite track, A New Way of Life.

Anyway... I'm just genuinely happy about it. Truly.😉

A new wave in Music ·
...I was just scrolling through that current 40th Anniversary New Wave playlist (complete with lyrics) over at America Records.
There’s also stuff listed under Jugoton Music... though some things seem off.

While digging around, I stumbled upon Sanjas Li U Boji ? (1982)... which is actually the B-side of that cult single by TV from Mexico City... but strangely enough, the A-side isn't there yet.🤔

.....and check this out—it's the first time I've ever seen their studio performance on this - TV (1982)

.....and naturally, there's absolutely nothing from the B-52s either...😠

1. Elemental Trigger
2. Synergistic Perceptions
3. Hidden Refuge
4. Delusion Fields
5. Omnipresent Boundary
6. Undulating Terrain
7. A Point of No Return

👍👍👍

I can't quite put my finger on it, but I have this nagging feeling we've seen this suggestion floating around before. Maybe it's just my imagination...😁

Regardless—when you pair it with Lustmordian The Black Star (1994), which is an absolute staple of the dark ambient scene—you're looking at his mid-90s evolution. It’s a landmark release, really. It set the gold standard for countless artists and new generations from then until today.

Exactly.

In my view, this whole voting thing is really just a side note.
It’s much better when we get into a deep dive about any of the albums suggested... rather than just focusing on the one that happens to win the round.

I find it pretty wild that New Order didn't take home a clean sweep here... even though I didn't personally cast my vote for them...

If you ask me, Technique stands out as their most polished work—it’s just incredibly consistent from start to finish.

Some tracks like PC&L really hit their stride early on, but then things seem to dip a bit toward the end of the record...

You actually reminded me of something. A few days back, I gave Downward Spiral a shot. Honestly? I barely made it past the third track before tapping out. I’d love it if someone could point me toward some other NIN gems down the road.

What does he even have to do with Trenta... besides being supposedly close buddies?
