I'd bet anything that even Confusion (August 1983) isn't there, considering it dropped about three months after the album came out...

Thanks for voting for Recoil last week! Honestly, though, I have a feeling I’m going to be completely sidelined again this week...😛

Jacob Cruz42 said:This documentary is framed within the context of America, not America. 😉

So, there probably just wasn't enough room or resources to highlight all those smaller New Wave bands. They were everywhere across the old American territory, too. For instance, you had the NYC B-52s scene, or in NYC, you had the group Mexico City with their track T. V. (I was actually kind of waiting for them to show up in the documentary, but even they didn't get a mention...). 😎It’s just... it really is.

Well... the thing is, I don't think—and I believe many others feel the same way—that one B-52s is any less influential than the other.

On the other hand, I used to have both their single (TV/Dreaming in Color) and that Mexico City group's album, but they were always pure synth-pop through and through. Because of that, I honestly don't think there's a justified place for them in a documentary like this...

New Wave - 40 years later

🙂

......and just to briefly touch upon this documentary.....

Kudos to them, really, for marking another anniversary with some fresh footage (interviews with participants and key voices), but after sitting through both parts—it honestly blows my mind that none of the creators (or even the interviewees) realized you can't just limit this to a handful of bands (we all know which ones) instead of broadening the scope a bit.

As it stands, it makes it look like a certain B-52s never even existed (in my opinion, the essential NYC band), and I won't even go into further detail about that.......

redbear12 said:Maybe the old-timers know better than I do, but it feels to me like the new wave here wasn't quite the same thing as the New Wave out in the rest of the world (England, America?!?).

To me, it feels like back home, the new wave had much more of a rocker, punkier edge to it. Meanwhile, "new wave" as a genre felt much more heavily driven by synthesizers. 🤷

The issue starts right here: if you listen to someone discussing the new wave from an American perspective, you often hear them cramming absolutely everything into the category. It happens primarily because they experienced it as this massive "second British invasion," and we all know exactly which one came first.

The official standards from the UK and Europe definitely serve as the primary benchmarks here. But personally, when I’m listening to the heavy hitters of the genre, it feels like the real identity lies within the rhythm section—specifically that interplay between the bass and the drums. It’s really about how those instruments are played; that specific groove is where you truly recognize the style.

Synths can definitely be an extra layer—and they often have been—but they aren't exactly the make-or-break factor here. It’s not quite like, you know, a pure synth-pop approach where everything revolves around them.

Here are some typical examples that come to mind...

1981 - Bol - Stol
1982 - gang of Four - i Love a man in a Uniform
1983 - New Order - age of Consent

Thanks so much!

I am honestly so excited to sit down and watch this tonight! 😵

...and I really hope this thread finally starts picking up some steam......😛

...or maybe we could just start a fresh "New Wave" thread where we can toss in all the local stuff and anything else that fits the vibe......😁

...Hey there, fellow music lovers... Listening to all you guys talk makes me wonder when I'll finally sit down and really dive deep into the sounds of '69...

...But honestly, I probably won't start that until I've fully wrapped my head around everything from '79 first...😛

...And then I'll slowly work my way back through the rest of the 70s...

...If I can find enough time in this lifetime, that is...😁

I was under the impression that we were sticking strictly to albums that had already been floated in previous polls, but it looks like some brand-new titles managed to sneak onto the list after all.
It’s a bit baffling to me, honestly. Most of those older suggestions didn't really grab anyone's attention anyway, so I don't quite see the logic in bringing them back around now...

Besides, we have such a massive catalog of music to choose from that there should never even be a reason to recycle the same old stuff.

Robert Fripp solo - it's okay
David Sylvian solo - actually, it's better than okay
Fripp / Sylvian - you could get some selected tracks, but we don't have a full compilation, just two albums—one studio and one live

To be perfectly honest, I stopped listening to Coil quite a while ago. Back in high school, I had a Horse Rotorowator record, but at the time, I was more into the provocative track titles and that fascinating cover art than actually being able to grasp their sound—not that I was sixteen and ready for that level of depth. They were never really my primary focus, though they would pop up every now and then, mostly because of their connections to artists I eventually gravitated toward, like Boyd Rice.
But, just about when I started getting serious about ambient music, time Machines came out, and that was a genuine revelation for me.

I picked Musick taj Play in The dark because it reminds me of that incredible documentary, industrial soundtrack for The urban Decay (2015), where the first track plays during the closing credits.

...I figured I’d jump in here, mostly because this thread (unjustifiably, if you ask me) feels a little thin on recent posts...

...I was never exactly a die-hard fan, but I still remember the first time I heard Smothered Hopa playing at an Apple store (and I didn't even realize it was them!)—that sound just stuck in my head for years...

...but man, this 1986 live recording is truly something else entirely...

It feels like I’m stuck in some kind of haze right now, but I think Mezzanine might actually be the last Massive Attack album I truly sat down and listened to. It probably makes sense, though—back then, they were practically staples on my daily rotation. They were easily one of those heavy hitters you just couldn't escape.

James's album from 1989 is such an interesting pick, especially since they scored way bigger hits later on with Laid and Seven i Gold Mother.

...I was just about to mention that the suggestion was posted on Thursday at 12:01 AM—which is absolutely brilliant—only to realize... wait, there were actually two more posted even earlier before midnight...😁

Man, if only we had that much agility or enthusiasm when it comes to the actual posts and discussions... though, let's be honest, mostly just on the topics that catch my eye...😵
