velvetcrane57 said:If you were talking about Crash, yeah, I voted for it. To me, it’s easily the best one. It seems like people here just didn't get it, so they end up voting for overrated stuff like Lord of the Rings or typical American bullshit.

Hahaha... I honestly love it when someone is just being real about themselves and their own taste. Personally, I’d put Crash right behind Gladiator and Million Dollar Baby, but I still hold it dear. I could probably watch it a hundred times and it would never feel exhausting or mindless (like Lord of the Rings), pretentious (like No Country for Old Men), sappy and banal (like Slumdog Millionaire), or just plain empty (like The Departed)... Now, Chicago is actually quite solid within its genre—it has some really great songs—but it doesn't even come close to The Pianist, which I think should have been the big winner that year. American Beauty is a very good movie, actually an excellent one, but I guess I’ve grown a bit sick of it because it snatched the top prizes away from much better films (The Insider and Sixth Sense, and don't even get me started on why Magnolia wasn't even nominated for Best Picture), plus the lead actors kind of rub me the wrong way. A Beautiful Mind is a good film too, but maybe it lacks a certain weight? Still, considering I think it was one of those weaker years for American cinema, I suppose you can't really blame the Academy...
"Gladiator", without a single doubt 🙏 then comes Million Dollar Baby and everything else

It doesn't really matter to me whether I watch a movie now or a year from now. I happened to come across In Bruges and watched it. I don't regret it; I actually gave it a solid 7 out of 10.🙂

As for The Matador, I don't quite trust your take on it.🙂 (I'm not saying the movie is bad, per se, but if I never end up seeing it, I won't feel like I missed out.)

On this forum, and on the internet in general, I try to find people who look for the exact same things in cinema as an art form. It's rare that we disagree. I think that's probably the best way to discover a higher percentage of great films. So far, it seems to be working for me.

I used to think that way too, but since I have a pretty good sense of whether I'll enjoy a film or not, I rarely get it wrong. This time, however, I missed the mark—so, it happens, I suppose...😛
You might not be pleasantly surprised, but I still give it a warm recommendation.😉
Any good progressive bands? in Music ·
Michelle Stewart59 said:Someone mentioned ISIS—definitely, absolutely them!!! I mean, you've got Opeth and Pain of Salvation, those absolute Swedish masterminds, plus Porcupine Tree, and Tool (if you're into that "gritty" American progressive stuff)...
Or maybe Dream Theater or Sigur Rós... Honestly, people, have a little bit of taste!! 🙂

As for rock... A Perfect Circle, some progressive rock/alternative... Aaaaah, my heart is finally at peace now. 🙂

Well, damn, everyone has their own taste, I guess... It doesn't offend me that you brought up taste, but maybe if you were going to suggest Pink Floyd or King Crimson instead of Sigur Rós, it would be better... rather than suggesting names like Tulčić or Kružić. 🙂

Dana Robinson7 said:Look, let's not start taking insults personally here. 😢

I mean, it’s totally fine to trash them if that's what you feel. But honestly, it’s like when people only ever listen to albums like > or >. I guess I just don't really care; there are plenty of bands everyone else raves about that I think are complete garbage, so why should this be any different? 😍

Oh, and yeah—those last two > albums were a total disaster for me. Personally, I think their older stuff is much more worth a listen.

I am truly sorry if you took that as an insult, I really didn't mean it that way.... I just feel this need to express my actual opinion on the band, but at the same time, I get that some people think they're amazing. It's just like how I understand that someone might find > boring.

pretty pleaaaasseeee.... 😍 🙂

uuu....that is a solid list 👍 btw, which American music festival was Spike at where these bands actually played (and weren't just wearing diapers)???

Dana Robinson7 said:God, why on earth are you shoving Muse in here? 😕

Maybe some of the older stuff carries certain progressive rock elements, but then you look at something like The Mars Volta. 🙂 Ugh, just rolling with it... I don't know. It just doesn't sit right with me. Maybe I'm wrong, but I guess it just doesn't work.

I honestly don't know how much weight The Mars Volta carries in the eyes—or maybe I should say ears?—of a true progressive music enthusiast, but I personally absolutely love them. So, I suppose it’s only fair that I give them a recommendation.

Not me either, I suppose. I mean, Muse is an okay band, even if they aren't really progressive. As for The Mars Volta, I guess they're more like progressive chaos than an actually quality progressive band.👎

Even though they constantly cite King Crimson as their primary influence, I suspect they’d probably sell their very souls to the devil if they could actually stumble upon something even remotely as good as *In the Court of the Crimson King*. Maybe. Or maybe not. But I really think they would.

Even if bands like King Crimson, Pink Floyd, or Sigur Rós tend to go overboard sometimes, I guess it doesn't even compare to those provocateurs known as The Mars Volta.
I would honestly sell my soul to T-Mobile US if they could just manage to book even one single act from this list: Sigur Ros, Arcade Fire, FBI, Radiohead, My Morning Jacket, Calexico, or Muse...

It wasn't quite as good as I was hoping it would be... I guess my favorite von Trier film out of the three I've managed to see was "Dogville," though even then, I wouldn't say I was totally blown away.
Psycho vs The Shining in Movies ·
crimsondriver54 said:That’s a tough one. I think I’d have to go with The Exorcist. It’s just one of those films that leaves a massive, unforgettable mark on any true cinephile, especially horror fans. It’s a total masterpiece of the genre, honestly.

Also... actually, if you ask me, these two are basically the best horror movies ever made. I guess "The Shining" falls slightly behind them (if it even counts as being behind), and while "Psycho" is great, these two just feel closer to my heart.

In my humble opinion, this is easily the best movie produced in the States over the last few years... though I wouldn't go quite as far as saying the last 20 years, given that we've seen a handful of truly phenomenal masterpieces in the meantime—something like "Saving Private Ryan," for instance.

Some of those movies you mentioned actually came out back in 2007.

Anyway, if you ask me, the best thing from 2008 has to be The Dark Knight, and then maybe WALL-E follows it. Though, I haven't really sat down with those big "Oscar favorites" yet, so... I guess...

A few were even from 2006 (like "Fall", for instance), they just didn't hit the US theaters or video stores until 2008.😉

I didn't include films like "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button", "Doubt", or "Slumdog Millionaire" for two reasons: 1. I haven't seen them (I generally try to avoid watching stuff downloaded from the internet if I have other options).

2. They haven't even made it to the local theaters here yet.

My apologies if this topic already exists, I didn't check beforehand... anyway, please list roughly 10 of your favorite films from 2008—actually, you can write more or less than that. The movies don't necessarily have to have been filmed in 2008; the main thing is that they first arrived here in the States that year, whether it was in theaters or just hit the video rental stores... please, go ahead and elaborate! Here is my list:

1. 4. Fall (Tarsem Singh)
2. Once (John Carney)
3. 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (Christian Mungiu)
4. American Gangster (Ridley Scott)
5. Juno (Jason Reitman)
6. Dawn Escape (Werner Herzog)
7. 7. Uncover (Brian de Palma)
8. 8. Goodbye, Grace (James C. Strouse)
9. Reservation Road (Terry George)
10. Brothers (James Gray)

And sitting on the sidelines waiting:

Taken (Pierre Morel)
Mongol (Sergei Bodrov)
Happy-go-lucky (Mike Leigh)
Vicky Cristina Barcelona (Woody Allen)
Things We Lost in the Fire (Susanna Bier)
Into the Wild (Sean Penn)
The Orphanage (Juan Antonio Bayona)
There Will Be Blood (Paul Thomas Anderson)
In Bruges (Martin McDonagh)
Wristcutters (Goran Dukic)
Lars and the Real Girl (Craig Gillespie)
Lust, Caution (Ang Lee)

......
genre: drama
cast: Al Pacino, Sean Penn, Julianne Moore, Jennifer Connelly, Ben Kingsley, Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, and Meryl Streep.

I highly doubt any of this American trash will ever reach that level.

It’s not that I’m judging ahead of time or anything, but I kind of share those doubts with you, 😉
though, if I'm being honest, there have been plenty of other horror films that actually managed to scare the life out of me. 😲
