If she hadn't gotten so wrapped up in that whole feminist bandwagon—you know, being one of the first to turn her back on Woody Allen and acting all regretful about working on To Rome with Love, even though he's basically the reason anyone knows her instead of just seeing her waving her hands around in those weirdly niche Noah Baumbach movies... well, maybe she wouldn't have ended up with nothing but that one "win" where she popped up in every single frame during the Oscar ceremony, even if it wasn't the big moment she wanted.
Lady Bird is actually a pretty cool step for Greta Gerwig’s career. It’s not just because it’s her directorial debut, but because she actually knows how to tell a coming-of-age story that hits home for people of all ages, even if it is done in that quirky, signature Gerwig way. 😁

At the very least, it made me want to finally sit down and watch Brooklyn, which I've been avoiding lately, mostly just because of Saoirse Ronan.

Yesterday, some US tabloids were reporting that Meryl Streep had recovered and was getting ready to jump back into those postponed shows... then today, total shock. 😢

I’d suggest checking out two of his roles that maybe folks over here haven't seen yet: first is his supporting part in what's easily the best American film from the last couple of decades, "Gunpowder," and second is the lead in Oleg Novković's underrated flick "Normal Man." Both movies have this thing in common where his role as a taxi driver really captures the vibe of a depressed, hopeless society. I can't wait to finally catch the acclaimed Constitution.

I really wish we could all team up and send a collective appeal to get this thread creator's permanent ban lifted. Someone on the forum told me you have to wait six months from the date of the ban before you can even request an appeal, which means the requirements for doing that are finally being met this month...

And let's not forget that Remam got banned over some PDF football stuff, which had nothing to do with the topics he’s actually known for, like movies. I mean, the horror movie threads have been at least 30 percent quieter since he was removed, just to show how much one person can impact certain subforums... I never got the vibe that he was spreading intolerance, unless you count his debating style being a little less subtle than what's allowed here.

Light of Day (1987)

Both were helmed by great directors like James Bridges and Paul Schrader, and if you ask me, they feature the absolute peak performances from a young, rising Michael J. Fox...
The first one was based on a bestseller by American novelist Jay McInerney, so he basically walked into a buzzsaw with American audiences before it even hit theaters. People claimed Fox didn't nail the role, which is such a nonsense critique considering it’s probably his most mature work—especially since his career eventually slowed down due to his health issues in the early nineties...
The truth is, Fox was exhausted; he was mostly filming at night because he was busy shooting the hit sitcom Family Ties during the day. But honestly, that chaos actually helped him play the part perfectly—that sleep-deprived, struggling writer losing his grip on his dreams in the big city...

As for the second one, I have no clue why the reviews were so bad. I haven't checked, but I think it might be the lowest-rated film by the great Paul Schrader. It's totally unfair. It shows the slow collapse of a rock band led by a brother (Michael J. Fox) and sister (rock legend Joan Jett). Their complicated bond, shaped by their different personalities, gets torn apart by the choice between fame and family... I don't think I've ever seen a story about rock 'n' roll written or acted with that much perfection...

Not sure how younger crowds feel about this kind of humor, but for me, it's still the gold standard... even its sequels held up. Modern "parodies" just feel uninspired and way too heavy on the sexism—it's hard to even find them funny. To pull off a good parody, you actually have to get the context, not just force in a bunch of random skits and fart jokes...

Classics like Top Secret, Hot Shots, and The Naked Gun & Loaded Weapon really nailed it.

Here's a slightly lesser-known one that's actually solid—a twisted take on the Salem witch trials. It stars John Travolta's wife, the gorgeous Kelly Preston.
