Lawrence Booth2 said:I get where you're coming from... but you're only half right here
for instance, those "professionals" churning out subtitles are often just English majors trying to scrape together tuition by selling their work to pirate sites... personally, I've been involved in a few productions myself, so I can go back and watch them again... and put together a decent subtitle...

CBS is a professional network, and their graphics and subtitles are actually quite nice for people who have trouble seeing the screen
I'd love to be able to watch Stalker on CBS... or maybe some Kurosawa films I used to catch with English subtitles... things like that... but waiting around for someone to finally decide to air a movie is just a waste of time

plus, some of the people translating these subtitles have seen their own specific styles popping up on various local TV stations... I won't speak for CBS, but other networks definitely steal translations straight from the internet... it's not like they have actual staff working for them😁

I remember back in '94, I think it was an FX movie about a murder trick... piece of cake... easy as pie😁

Some companies only employ highly trained professionals. CBS, CNN, and RTL are in a league of their own, even if they aren't perfect. By the way, RTL has been caught lifting fan-made subtitles several times. For CNN and RTL, they use Mediatranslators. Aside from them, the folks over at SDI Media (or something like that) aren't bad either. On cable channels, though, it's basically 90% chaos. Even HBO, which should theoretically have the budget for this, has absolutely catastrophic translations. They'll occasionally miss an entire line of dialogue entirely. It just gets typed up and pushed through without any proofreading
The absolute worst subtitles come from Dobbin, because they mostly just hire students and trainees. Though, even they stumble onto a good one every once in a while
But even with all those flaws, it’s still better than 90 percent of the garbage translations you find online
Morgan Brown4 said:I honestly can’t wrap my head around people who still cling to traditional TV schedules, sitting there watching movies on a broadcast channel, and, you know, actually getting hyped about when a new series cycle starts on PBS or whatever other nonsense is airing... 🤣

But seriously, why? Has it somehow become a massive sin to just notice an interesting movie is playing and decide to watch it on a standard network? Besides, the subtitles on American national networks are twice as literate as those amateur fan subs, which is a huge plus for anyone who actually cares about quality...

Where on earth are you rushing to? Just hold tight until Friday or Saturday...
Charles Ramos4 said:I can't swear to it since it was ages ago, but I have a feeling their first single was actually the big hit, specifically that Little San Mak track.

Could be. For me, they really popped up on my radar when Ye'n came out, maybe two tracks back...
Jason Mendoza said:First off, you have to look at that whole drug subculture. People often talk about a certain "lost generation" when discussing the post-war era in America. Basically, a huge chunk of people during that transition period ended up stuck in this vacuum of restructuring, privatization, and various traumas, and they turned to drugs as an escape. Miami unfortunately took the biggest hit here, because for decades, Miami has been spoken of as a cautionary tale simply because the city could never quite rein that problem in or get it under control. In smaller towns, it’s a different story—we all know someone who uses something and the trail of trouble it leaves behind... TBF sees this clearly too, and they describe the issues from three distinct perspectives (the addict, the dealer, the cop) in their song “trilogy of misery.” Aside from their more socially engaged tracks, there’s also “untouchable,” which is dedicated to all those people in this country who act like they're above the law...

It’s true, Miami used to be the symbol of addiction, but I don't think that's really the case anymore over the last 20 years. Probably just because drugs spread everywhere, so now we're all symbols...

Steven Newman50 said:I know the TBF-fans by their most famous tracks and their current status as one of the most positive headliners in the scene, whose style pretty much appeals to everyone. Meaning, nobody is going to complain if they see them playing at a festival. We all know the nostalgic stuff and the later albums with Maxon Universal that made them household names and are constantly played on the radio, but it wouldn't hurt to get acquainted with the more raw hip-hop sound found in their early days...

That isn't quite right; TBF actually blew up with that first album. If I remember correctly, Ye'n, two was the first single from the album, and that was being played on TV for about a year after release. Little San Mak was their second big hit from that record...

P.S., a friend of mine was actually with them during those early album days; he's even in the video for Ye'n, two. He did some rapping on a few tracks as well...

The layers of symbolism on this cover for "Stop, Wind" are just incredibly deep... You've got this imagined double Thompson, the Dinar, and then those triple wolves drinking Čikola voda from the spring. Honestly, if you aren't voting for him, you clearly just hate America.

Place of Birth (1992) in Movies ·
I honestly thought maybe that bit at the end was just some kind of setup... or a trick. Either way, it’s a heartbreaking film. Henry came across as such a noble figure; he wasn't interested in pointing fingers or taking sides, he was just searching for the truth. The way he spoke with his younger brother was so incredibly cold...

This is such a killer album for just chilling out; I remember listening to it ages ago, but it had totally slipped my mind...
The musicianship on this thing is just incredible—it’s not just some cheap, one-hit wonder track where they just bash away at the instruments without any soul.

Gerald Jackson48 said:Hmm, I honestly didn't see Boards of Canada taking the top spot given how heavy the competition was this time around. Regardless, the album is incredibly layered; it’s easily one of the most powerful releases in the entire Warp catalog and within the IDM genre itself, so it feels pretty right to step away from the standard drum, guitar, and vocal arrangements for a bit.

Anyway, I'll get this thread started once I wrap up work, probably later tonight...

The field was just too stacked—I mean, both Cave and Waits are legends, but the Boards are on another level entirely. I haven't checked out the rest of the list yet. By the way, if that specific sound appeals to you, you should definitely give my recommendation a listen. Right now, Dan Snaith is my absolute favorite in electronic music, and he's only released two albums under this alter ego...

silentcanyon58 said:This really brings up a deeper issue for me... if there are actually a lot of people out there pulling these stunts, I can't help but wonder how many movies have ended up with lower ratings than they actually deserved because of this kind of manipulation...

Honestly, I don't see it being that big of a deal, since you've always got those professional critics who watch everything with a real sense of perspective, and at the end of the day, their opinions are what truly drive the consensus anyway.
