OS and RAM usage: what to expect? in IT Support ·
I think you hit the nail on the head. They love massaging the numbers so they look "better"—it’s not a total lie, but it isn't exactly the truth either. It's just subtle manipulation. They’ll quote an overclocked CPU speed instead of the base clock because, obviously, a higher number sounds more impressive. Just window dressing.

It felt off when they offered 16GB of RAM, too. Didn't really fit with the rest of the specs.

I even reached out to ask if the processor matched the description, but I've been met with nothing but silence.

Just saw this. The product description says 8GB of RAM, but the Technical Specs list 16GB. Now I have no clue how much memory is actually in there.

Will this OS I mentioned above actually work for me?

It's Windows 7 Professional 64.

Is that processor any good?

PS: are x32 and x86 just different names for the same thing?

I'm eyeing this laptop. I’d probably just slap Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on it.

What’s your take on this CPU? Is it actually worth the price tag? Same goes for the GPU.

I'm running Windows 7 Professional, but I have a general question: does the type of OS dictate how much RAM a PC or laptop needs to have? Are there specific limitations or compatibility requirements I should worry about? I'm looking at buying a laptop with 8 to 16 GB of RAM (probably going with 16 GB).

Also, is more memory always an absolute advantage? Cheers..

Alright, alright, thanks for the offers. I've got a few to look over now. Honestly, I'm not obsessing over the exact dollar amount; it's all about the value proposition—quality versus price. As it stands, the offer sent to me here in Savannah has been labeled the absolute worst on this forum, which pretty much means you guys successfully talked me out of taking it. I'm not looking to rush into anything, even if I am that kind of guy. I’ll print out these quotes, take some time to weigh them properly, and then make my move. Living in Savannah just means everything costs more than it should elsewhere, and that's a real pain in the ass.

Timothy Kim60 said:In Chicago, you get free assembly and delivery on orders over $667 (you can even pay cash on delivery) — just order online, via phone, or email if that's your thing.

To answer your question: if you have the cash, grab the build from crimsonstag84. It’s a significantly better machine (better processor, higher quality power supply and case). Go to a site like Futura-IT or adm.hr — look at the components one by one compared to what was suggested to you. You'll see it's much cheaper.

For example, check the price of a 500GB hard drive here:

Or 1000 GB:

You mention a better power supply, but I didn't even say what kind of power supply was being offered to me. You mentioned a faster processor and a better case. You aren't mentioning the motherboard or the RAM?

I'm not arguing that individual parts are cheaper than they are here in Savannah. Chicago is always cheaper across the board. That's just how it is.

One stick of Kingston ValueRAM DDR3 SDRAM. It’s a 4GB module, 1600MHz (PC3-12800), single rank, unbuffered, with CL11 latency. Simple enough.
One Toshiba 500GB hard drive. 7200rpm. 32MB cache.
One Chicony Active 350W unit, plus one 120mm fan.
Zalman ZM-T4. USB 3.0. Micro ATX.
One Asrock s1150 H81M-DGS.

Total: $746 Futura-IT. If you want free assembly and delivery, this is the spot.

You can pick up a used coffee maker for... $17Look, this wipes out the whole thread with that overly complicated configuration of yours. 🙂

Look, I respect the input, but since the price range is basically the same, I have to ask: why would this build be better than the one they pitched me at the local shop in Savannah (or maybe E-disk)? A little clarification wouldn't hurt. Honestly, I don't care which way I spend my $300 or whatever; I just need to know exactly what I'm paying for.

So, where exactly is Futura-IT located?

Larry Ortiz5 said:What about the power supply? Like, what model is it? This is a pre-built, right?

Look, this machine isn't bad if you just want to browse the web or watch YouTube. It's fine for basic tasks. But forget about gaming on this setup... especially if you're stuck with just $733. If you just need it for everyday work—like I mentioned—you can definitely build a decent computer for that kind of money.

Fine, I don't know the power supply specs yet. I'll ask next time. Regardless, I don't need a gaming rig (I don't play games). I just need it for standard work, watching videos, and browsing. For graphics, I might occasionally run things like Google Earth or Street View—that counts as graphics, right? Would this configuration be okay for that?

Since you're suggesting it, why don't you build me a "decent" one? For this price, or maybe slightly more—if I go a little over my budget, it won't kill me.

Hey. Local shop offered me this build as their "standard" option. Curious what tier this actually falls into:

ASRock H6 1M-DGS MOTHERBOARD (S1155) $133
Intel Pentium G2030 PROCESSOR $183
500GB WD5000AAKX DISK $153
4GB 1333MHz Transcend DDR3 MEMORY $124
LG DVD RW 22X SATA OPTICAL DRIVE $51
Linkworld 321 420W CASE $97

Anyway, looking at roughly $733 for it. Cash.

get the latest version of GOM or
just install a combined community codec pack—everything is pre-configured. those codecs give you Media Player Classic-Home Cinema

if the video file itself isn't broken, any AVI player should handle it perfectly👍

Downloaded the first one suggested, GOM, and it worked. At least I have sound now. 👍

Funny enough, all my file icons have changed to look like GOM player icons now—there’s this little footprint icon everywhere. I assume it's tied to the player settings, maybe that "associate files" option. They’re all different colors too: MP4s are green, AVI is orange, FLV is purple. Before this, my Flash video files showed thumbnails, but now they're just GOM icons. Does this mean everything is set to open in GOM now? And can you actually change the icon looks back?

PS: Turns out GOM won't touch MP4 files. Tried it, and it's missing a codec again. RealPlayer handles MP4s just fine, though. Looks like I'll be switching between them.

I've got two file types here—Flash video and AVI video. Everything works fine with the Flash video, picture and sound included, but whenever I try playing these AVI files through RealPlayer, I get the video but zero audio. Is this some kind of codec issue?

I tried messing around with the RealPlayer settings, specifically going to Preferences - Media types - Manually configure Media Types for RealPlayer and checking the box for AVI video to make sure it was "assigned" to RealPlayer. Still nothing. No sound. Clearly, that wasn't the fix.

Anyone know what the catch is?
I've heard zinc is pretty big for guys, so I'm wondering if anyone here actually uses it. Is it worth starting a regimen if I've never touched it before? What’s the actual point of taking it?

PS: Sorry to the mods if this isn't the right sub, just wasn't sure where to drop this.

vividfalcon14 said:Probably because they were wiped from the server. I'm not positive, but if you don't have an active album and those images haven't been viewed in three months, the system likely auto-deletes them just to save space. 🙂

Right. Interesting. Sounds logical. Thanks for the info. I usually only upload functional stuff there—screenshots and things like that—so once I've used them on the forum, I don't bother opening them again. Actually, I usually delete them shortly after... wait, hold on. Is that why they're disappearing from the forum too? I thought once a photo was posted here, it became independent of the host server. So you're telling me if I delete a photo from my Imgur account, it vanishes from the forum as well?

Quick question for the group. Does anyone know why these photos I upload via Imgur—whether it's here or on other boards—eventually vanish? All that's left in my posts after a while is this:

Health-wise, I’m fine—never had any issues before. But lately, when I’m lying in bed at night, everything is dead quiet and there’s absolutely nothing going on, I start hearing this constant tone in both ears. Honestly, I don't even think I'm "hearing" it so much as it's just stuck in my head.

Has anyone actually heard of or read anything about whether this can be cured?

p.s. if you don't have anything useful to add, just move along—I can hear better than most of you, I'd bet on that.

Sounds like tinnitus to me. Professional musicians deal with it all the time from loud concerts and constant exposure to high decibels. Just stop wearing headphones; as far as I know, there isn't an effective fix for it. I'm just a layman, though, so go see a doctor. It might just be some damage to your eardrum.
placiddrifter26 said:Your results look completely normal, which basically means you're healthy!

Fine. Thanks.

Besides, the numbers looked way too low to me—not even hitting a single full unit. Felt off.
Hey. If anyone here can help me make sense of this PSA blood test from a recent checkup, I'd appreciate it. I've attached the lab results below—it looks like the actual result is on the left and the reference ranges are on the right, at least that's how I'm reading it. I'm a layman, so I could be wrong... just looking for some insight.

In case the screenshot is too washed out for anyone to read clearly, the result is listed as 0.73 ug/L.

Thanks for any info you can provide. Best.
