Independence Day vs. War of the Worlds in Movies ·
I can't believe Independence Day is leading.

Turns out Dolph Lundgren is actually a better actor than Jim Carrey.

Independence Day is absolute garbage, easily one of the worst things to ever come out of Hollywood...

Koepp is solid...

I watched Secret Window on DVD... honestly, it didn't do much for me...
But then I checked out the bonus features and heard Koepp's breakdown of the film, and I just thought: "What was I thinking?"
How did I miss the camera moving into the mirror at the start, only to pull back out of it at the end?
Or how Turturra appears in every shot as if he's emerging directly from Depp's mind... and so on.
The guy really knows his stuff.

Makes me wonder how he handled War of the Worlds...

Nothing truly dies...
I’m skeptical because the Wachowskis tend to mess up their scripts...
But hey, we'll see.

By the way...
It feels like Matheson's books and stories have been adapted for the screen more times than I can count.
For instance...
Duel—it was just Dennis Weaver versus a massive tanker truck.

Then there's a great Koepp's "Stir of Echoes"

along with a whole bunch of other stuff...

I'm with you on that previous post.
Kudos to Del Toro.
He captured the essence of the comic perfectly.
Hard to find the right words.
The movie actually exceeded my expectations.

As for the comics...
Now we wait for V for Vendetta to see how that turns out.
Well, it isn't Hollywood, so maybe they won't butcher the source material like they did with Constantine.
Hugo Weaving playing V... let's see.

In that case, I’d suggest he stick with it.
If he’s looking for a decent adaptation of a Matheson's book, he should check out "Stir of Echoes".

Hmm...
The Omega Man is just a pretty mediocre adaptation of Matheson's great novel, I Am Legend.
You're better off hunting down the book...
There's an American edition available.
Read the book first, then watch the movie. You'll see how basic it really is.

The first two are basically James Lavelle - GU FC Barcelona

Maybe finish one thought before jumping to the next?

I'm not so sure we can just label Kurgan and the kid as "villain" and "hero."
It doesn't feel like Kurgan is really a villain.
But he's definitely as stubborn as a mule.

We learn a little more every episode, but man, it is slow.

Well... we finally heard from the board in the last episode.
Bit by bit, I guess.....

The series is phenomenal.
It's finally Friday. Heh.

Didn't that preacher play Kurgan in Highlander?

Forty-two artists doesn't necessarily make three good compilation CDs.

Sure they do.
If you combine, say, K&D's DJ Kicks with Lavelle's double LP Barcelona, the artist count is still under 42.

I wasn't laughing at the list itself, just seeing Jazzanovi and Minus 8 on there.
Minus 8's Batucada 1 and Batucada 2 are pure trip-hop, aren't they? Braaaaasil... la la la al al la la....
Personally, I think the whole crew would lose it if someone told them they play trip-hop.
It’s baffling how people label artists from labels that built their own reputation on compilations like "futur sound of jazz" or how Minus 8, via a label promoted through "science fiction jazz," gets categorized this way.

if you really think they are, get in touch and I'll lend you a few MP3s.

Depends on what you're offering...
if you know anything about electronic music production, you know picking sounds and samples is the easy part. The real work requires passion, love, and actual musical knowledge.

Well... I have neither the knowledge nor the passion.
With enough expertise and drive, maybe you could convince Jazzanov he plays trip-hop.

I guess those guys probably know more about electronica than someone who doesn't even know how to write a basic loop.

Exactly. It's obvious you're bursting with wisdom. The rest of us uneducated types just have to read posts and learn.

It's strange. You listen to some music and conclude it's a derivative of jazz, then you go online and some guy on some random trip-hop forum decides it isn't jazz, it's trip-hop. And suddenly, that becomes the absolute truth.
As a complete amateur, all I can say is there are trip-hop influences here and there, and certain tracks definitely fit the genre... but primarily, it's jazz, D'nB, Latin, boogie, and funk... with trip-hop being an afterthought.

Anyway... I'm just a layman with no clue.

So, here we go... opening up Winamp...

Any updates on his set at the Fillmore?

Not sure... I live 186 miles outside of Chicago.
I caught him back in Italy though, during the Fez Jazz Collective festival.

Check out the lineup here:

Looking at this list just makes me laugh.
Jazzanovi and Minus 8 on the lineup.
Apparently, the entire electronic scene is just trip-hop now.
Should I just loop five beats on my laptop and claim I play trip-hop too?

Of course I've listened to Orbital. Who hasn't?
The Crystal Method
really good band

That’s why they charge $20,000 if you want them DJing all night.

The Compost crew isn't really my thing.

It’s all just jazz vibes. If you're into that, go for it.
It doesn't really hit the mark for me. Though, they have produced some good stuff before...
like fauna Flash - "fusion"

But if you want my honest opinion...
They can all basically hide behind this lineup:
James Lavelle, False Prophet, Meat Katie, elite force, Evil 9, force Mass motion, Adam Freeland, Lee Coombs, Dylan Rhymes, Kom and Bones, Drummatic Twins, Ils, PMT...

btw.
If you don't have it... you definitely need to pick up the "Community service" LP by The Crystal Method.

James Lavelle is easily my favorite DJ of all time.

You definitely need to grab the latest Essential mix by Unklesounds.
The stuff he and Filo put together there is just unbelievable.

If you have the track from the US tour, you've heard it: Meat Katie & Lee Coombs - Import.
A total masterpiece...

Though... if you don't have those "Reign" Remixes, you should definitely track them down.
