Bryan Scott4 said:How can I overclock an Intel Core 2 Duo, 2300 MHz (11.5 x 200) 4400+? Just a heads up, I'm a total newbie and don't really have a clue how any of this works...

Offtopic:wiredmarlin5, did you end up picking up that N64? I'm asking because I've been eyeing some of those old games...

As for how to actually clock it, a full explanation would probably be way too long for one post, but basically, you’re looking at bumping up the FBI (HTT)... just make sure you keep a close eye on your memory frequency since that tends to scale right along with the FBI. You'll want to lock the PCI at 100 MHz, and please, for heaven's sake, watch those temperatures! When you start messing with voltage, you really have to tread carefully, and if you're aiming for a serious overclock, you definitely need to make sure you've got a much better cooler installed...

OT:
I haven't grabbed it yet, mostly because nobody seems to have a complete set with everything I'm actually looking for... 😢

Well, I didn't quite catch that you already had one in the back, though I honestly can't wrap my head around why you'd bother putting one in the front if the rear is already occupied... Are you just feeling a little lazy today? I mean, the space in the front is sitting there completely empty just because you're working with a subpar, budget case😁

Wait, have you actually heard of the Firewire Bracket? It’s a total lifesaver if you're stuck in this situation! 🙂

I suppose I should just pipe down now, since it’s really my own fault for letting Equi go out and buy such a massive, high-wattage power supply...😁😁😁 a ban for me, then 🤣

Jesse Kern4 said:I managed to overclock my e8500 from 3.16 up to a whopping 3.9GHz!

That's a bit underwhelming... 😉

Anyway, what kind of rig are you actually running these days?
PC Modding in Desktops ·
Well, yeah, but I mean, it’s a little tougher than that... what am I even asking for here? It doesn't necessarily have to be a perfect 1280x1024 resolution, but he really could have just captured the essentials so things would actually look decent... especially if we're already dealing with that 56k bottleneck... 🙂
PC Modding in Desktops ·
There is absolutely no way you squeezed such a tiny little thumbnail in there 😛

And honestly, those CPU temperatures are only realistic if you're running your rig in a walk-in freezer at -20 degrees... 😁

Edward Peterson70 said:so he's reporting a CPU at 22C, with those first two cores sitting at 40C and 38C
that's a gap of about 12 degrees...

A twelve-degree spread😕?

You really ought to download Core Temp just to get a proper look at those actual temperatures... and

Hold on a second there, did you maybe not have the screwdriver turned the right way when you were working on that Sonic...??

Intel states that the operating voltage for your processor should be between 1.162V and 1.312V, and if you look at the Thermal Specification, they list 73.3°C as the limit. 🙂

http://processorfinder.intel.com/det...x?sspec=sla8x#

So, yeah, just go ahead and forget about that 60-degree mark I mentioned earlier... staying under 70 °C is perfectly fine... 🙂
Overclocking (Main Thread) in Desktops ·
I honestly can't wrap my head around why they'd set those default settings to 1.45V in the first place... I mean, really...?!

@darkowl72/">@@darkowl72, look, you’ve got some decent hardware here, but honestly, that cooler you're running is absolute garbage...

1. Just completely disregard whatever voltage the BIOS is reporting, because that doesn't tell the whole story; you really need to be looking at the actual voltage within Windows and specifically when the system is under a heavy load. That gap you see between them? That’s just the Drake effect... In my humble opinion, seeing temperatures climb north of 60 degrees Celsius during a load test is just totally unacceptable... so if I were in your shoes, I’d start by dialing back the voltage a bit, and maybe nudge the frequency down too, if you absolutely have to. I’d probably aim for somewhere around 1.30-1.32V while idling in Windows and then just hunt for the highest stable clock speed you can get at that specific voltage. To be perfectly honest, I don't quite grasp how the multiplier is driving those temps up so high, but 11X feels like way too much... maybe try dropping it to 9x or 10x... whichever one makes you smile more, purely for the memes... 🙂

2. Make sure you have all those helpful settings enabled in your BIOS, like the ones meant to help throttle the voltage, adjust the multiplier, and so on... 🙂

3. If you aren't afraid to spend a little bit of your precious free time, you should just sell that current cooler and pick up a ThermalTake Typhoon... then you'll finally see those temperatures dipping comfortably below 60 degrees...😁

Harold Lopez31 said:wiredmarlin5, please don't take this personally, because honestly, your score is pretty decent, though there's definitely room to push it much higher... I have zero doubts about what you can actually do.

It really looks like the processor is just being stubborn on you; Mema is fine, the motherboard is holding up, you're just having a run of bad luck... But hey, if you've got a rock-solid 3.85GHz at a relatively low voltage (not even counting the Vdrop), you might want to consider setting that as your daily driver for 24/7 use...😁

Hehe, well, it looks like the CPU is giving me the runaround... I guess I'll just have to wait and see how things play out...

On another note, I did a little more digging online, looking up serial numbers and all that good stuff... and according to what I found on Google, some of these specific chips were actually hitting over 5 GHz!

The thing is, it clearly needs much better cooling, but there isn't much I can do about that right now... unless I end up trying to run it out on the balcony if the weather gets cool enough...😁

steelsailor3 said:It’s honestly not even a bad starting point, really... you might want to try pushing the limits a bit by overclocking with a 7x multiplier...😠

Well, yeah... that’s definitely not a great situation to be in... 😢

Man, I was just thinking about how the E6300 was such an absolute beast of a processor only a year ago... honestly, looking back now, I know I definitely overpaid for that old E6400 I picked up... $500...Haha, honestly though, yours was just a slightly more budget-friendly version of the same thing...

steelsailor3 said:You want my KingMax sticks? They’ll hit 1040MHz (5-5-5-18) @ 2.1V 😬

Just kidding! But seriously, that's an awesome score... I was wondering though, is the CPU running at stock settings, or did you pull the Bigi off that EVGA card?

I’ve run some KingMax modules myself back in the day, so I know they’re actually pretty decent memory...

It makes total sense that the Typhoon performs better, because honestly, with stock settings, mine wouldn't even touch 3.65GHz...

If you ask me, the score is a bit underwhelming... especially when I consider that at 3.85GHz, it should only need about 1.47V... so I don't really get why there's such a struggle here... I even pushed it to 1.7V, and it still won't stay stable above 3.9GHz... 😢

Hitting 4GHz is basically just for show, like getting zero points on a test... 😢

Yeah...
Overclocking (Main Thread) in Desktops ·
I honestly haven't the slightest clue, because I've got the ST 800 sitting right here inside the machine... yet for some reason, the system just refuses to recognize it...
Overclocking (Main Thread) in Desktops ·
So, here is where I’ve managed to top out at the moment: http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=323956

It really seems like this processor just refuses to play ball once you push past 3.9GHz... no matter how much voltage I pump into it... 😢

But hey, we'll see how things settle down in a day or two once the thermal paste has had a chance to properly spread and seat itself... 🙂

steelsailor3 said:I haven't even installed the iTunes software that came bundled with the motherboard, I was just messing around in the BIOS settings myself...

Well, you should be able to see the results through those settings! If you bump up the voltage on the board via the BIOS and then crank the FBI frequency using that utility, I’d bet my bottom dollar you could hit around 530MHz based on what I've seen before... 🙂

By the way, I honestly don't have a clue what the actual technical differences are... I assume the Pro version is just a bit more robust than the standard one, right? 😁
Overclocking (Main Thread) in Desktops ·
steelsailor3, hey there, quick question for you... did you manage to pull that 510MHz directly from the BIOS settings, or were you just messing around with Easy Tune?
