Hehe, as long as you're happy with the results, that's really all that matters in the end... 🙂

I should probably mention first that those sensors don't always read things quite the same way depending on which processor you're throwing at them... 🙂

It’s honestly the exact same story on my end, too! I actually made the jump from an Intel Core 2 Duo to an E6700 recently... and man, the temperatures are looking significantly lower now... though, of course, I’m well aware that when you're using the same heatsink, any discrepancies shouldn't really be swinging more than five degrees in either direction...

electricmaker20 said:Could someone please walk me through how to overclock a Proc 5000+ Black Edition on a Gigabyte 570-SLI motherboard? If you look at this link here , there are instructions from the manufacturer, so if you could just explain things based on its BIOS... like where I actually bump up the multiplier, or if I really need to crank up the voltage... basically everything I'll need to do.
And if this has already been explained somewhere else, please just tell me which page it was on, because I haven't exactly combed through all 69 pages yet...

Sorry, but honestly:
McG said:Either you know what you're looking for, or you write a post like: "Good morning, my name is John Smith and I am hopelessly addicted to computer components. I want a new Penryn and which model should I pick? My usage is mainly DFP and I need some brutal clock speeds just to browse forums. Thanks in advance."

Saw this on another forum, but the sentiment is spot on. People who don't have a clue what they're doing—well, maybe they should just stop wasting their time...🙂

By the way, the heat sink gets about 8 cm larger if you grab a high-end C2D and overclock it like crazy, whereas for Intel, the improvement is a tiny 1.72cm... but hey, a win is a win, right?

Anyway, folks, unless you're racing toward a Q6600 and pushing past 4 GHz, you aren't even getting online!👍😁

Honestly, I don't think most people out there have the patience to sit around and hold your hand through every single little step... Most modern motherboards these days—we're talking about 95% of them—are actually pretty smart and will just automatically reset your CMOS back to the factory defaults if you accidentally mess something up; the board basically goes "wait, what on earth are you doing? and it just snaps everything right back to the original settings.

If you're just looking to do some very light overclocking, the stock cooler should be perfectly fine for your needs, but if you're planning on pushing things a bit harder, you really ought to look into getting a more robust cooling solution (you can find plenty of reviews and suggestions online if you want to browse through some options)...

Everything you really need to wrap your head around regarding overclocking is already laid out in that classic PC Gamer overclocking guide, but if you happen to hit a snag or get stuck somewhere along the way -> just give us a shout and we'll try to help you out! 🙂

Is this some kind of sick joke?

😁 I managed to hit 11500... but honestly, I think I hit a wall there because it just wouldn't go any higher, though my processor is sitting pretty at 3.6GHz...

You can always perform a CMOS clear by toggling that jumper from the 1-2 position over to 2-3—or whatever specific configuration your particular motherboard calls for—or, if you're feeling a bit more hands-on, you could just pop the battery right out of the board for a moment to force the BIOS back to its factory defaults... though I should mention that most modern boards these days are actually smart enough to automatically revert to the default settings if they detect two failed boot attempts in a row!

Man, those temperatures are looking pretty rough. How on earth is it hitting over 70 degrees Celsius???

So, here’s what I’d suggest... take the heatsink off, wipe away all that old thermal paste, and go with some Arctic Silver 5 and Ceramique... just a tiny, tiny amount, okay? Like, just a little speck... Also, try lightly sanding the base of the heatsink with some fine-grit sandpaper, then make sure you tighten everything down nice and snug at the end...

Clock speeds: Riva tuner http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=163

To adjust my memory and the core, you basically just slide that little arrow to the right... if I recall correctly, the factory defaults sit right around 575/1780MHz... and you probably won't be able to push the core extremely high—maybe hitting a ceiling around 620-660MHz—but the memory should be able to reach up to 2200MHz if my memory serves me right...

Now, when you're overclocking, there is one absolutely vital link in the chain, and that is your cooling setup... You’ll want to switch your fan settings from Auto over to Fixed (setting it to about 60% usually does the trick)... One really great thing about Riva is that it includes a super handy feature which is hardware monitoring—this lets you keep a close eye on your frequencies and temperatures while you're running through something like a 3DMark stress test... Just make sure those temperatures don't climb past 80 degrees Celsius...

You even have the option to create your own custom startup profile where you can set specific fan speeds and frequencies all at once...

CPU Overclocking

There isn't really any need to get too fancy here:

Keep your CPU voltage somewhere between 1.35V and maybe 1.5V max, at least until you actually figure out what you're doing...

The E4300 has a 9X multiplier, so if you take 300 FSB * 9X, you get 2700MHz, which should run quite smoothly at 1.3V... That’s more than enough for 24/7 usage, and with that voltage, your temperatures shouldn't even cross 45 degrees when you're running Orthos... You can check the temps using Core Temp (definitely try version 0.95.4 first)

You likely already know about the PCI-E lock and how the memory ratio depends on the FSB frequency... just try to keep it between 700-900MHz while aiming for the lowest possible latencies you can manage (anywhere from 4-4-4-12 up to a maximum of 5-5-5-18)... And whatever you do, don't push the memory voltage higher than 2.2V...

There is a much more detailed breakdown described over here: http://forum.pcekspert.com/showthread.php?t=88200

Honestly, there’s really no difference here, I’m certainly nothing smarter than anyone else... 🙂

I have to say, I respectfully disagree with you on this one... I just don't think that's quite how the situation stands!

Bryan Wood49 said:Oh, go on then... you just keep going... I’m over here just having a bit of harmless fun and being a little silly, while you seem intent on being nothing but pure, unadulterated spite...
Oh, come on now... I mean, let’s be honest here, I was already rocking an E6700 back when the rest of you were still struggling to get anything done on those old Pentiums...
Honestly, I feel like you’re just being difficult for the sake of it at this point...
I told you, I really did... if you can actually prove me right on this one, I’ll hand over my Core i7-13700K to you without a second thought...

Why even go there right now? I mean, I wasn't trying to be malicious or anything, truly, but I don't think you actually implemented the validation part yet... you can say whatever you like about the logic, of course, but I haven't actually seen it in action myself...
So you're telling me you actually had an E6700 while we were all stuck grinding away on those old Pentiums?? Well, look, my friend, honestly... it isn't exactly a crime to be without a high-end processor... though it certainly makes life a bit more interesting, doesn't it... $1167 Look, if you're just using a rig like this to stream some MP3s or watch adult content, or whatever else falls under that umbrella... well, honestly, it’s total overkill. I mean, what am I even trying to prove here? It's not like I'm out of my mind and looking to go out and fry my hardware... there are just certain fundamental rules of computing you have to respect, and you really shouldn't act naive or try to push things past their limits just to see what happens. Why on earth would I want to abuse a machine like this? I'm certainly not crazy enough to throw money down the drain for a measly one percent increase in performance every month... it just doesn't make sense...

Bryan Wood49 said:I was actually pushing that specific processor all the way up to 4.2 GHz back in the day, while you were still sitting there with that 6300 clocked at a mere 2.8 GHz... I hate to be the one to break it to you, but that’s just the cold, hard truth of it...

I mean, I’m really struggling to see how any of this actually connects to the point... if you ask me, you're just rambling on at this point... 😉

Bryan Wood49 said:Go ahead and push him all the way up to 5 GHz if you really want to... I think I’ll just keep mine sitting comfortably at 3.0 GHz... but hey, forgive me... I still feel like the moral victor here... I mean... it's just not right... sorry man...

Honestly, you really are the absolute best, most wonderful, most perfect forum member ever... if you can just overlook the fact that you’re also incredibly, terribly offensive!

Mike, I’m just pulling your leg a little bit, so please don't be mad at me, my friend... I am actually heading to bed now, and tomorrow I have a massive trek through the wilderness planned! 🙂

I was pushing that processor up to 4.2 GHz back when you were still struggling with a 6300 at 2.8 GHz... sorry, but it's just the truth...
Go ahead and try to overclock yours to 5 GHz if you want, but I’ll be sitting pretty right here at 3.0 GHz... I mean, forgive me, but I still feel like the undisputed winner in this little rivalry... it's just one of those things... sorry man.....

That doesn't mean much if you don't have the validation scores to prove it. By the way, my E6700 is going to outpace yours regardless of what kind of heavy machinery your dad owns😁

You really ought to check the stepping on that CPU, because if it's like mine... well, you're in great shape, but if it's a different revision, you might be in for a bit of a disappointment...

And besides, I used to run a Core i7-13700K 😉

The motherboard's range sits somewhere between 380 and 500MHz FSB, though I can't give you a definitive number right now... if I had to make a guess, I’d say you’re looking at roughly 420 MHz.

Once you manage to get your hands on one of those 6th series processors with a higher multiplier... then you'll be able to pinpoint that absolute maximum FSB limit. You might even have some luck pushing an E6300 if you crank the FSB voltage all the way up, set the multiplier to 6x, and bump the CPU voltage to 1.5V... and just see how far it carries you... but honestly, it would be much easier to gauge things using something like my E6700, which hits a wall right at 550, whereas with an E6300, you really never know where the ceiling is...
Overclocking (Main Thread) in Desktops ·
What are you guys actually working with here?

No, it’s not even that I need it, it’s just that I’d probably get way too carried away with all this nonsense, and besides, the motherboard can't push past a 455MHz FSB anyway... so there isn't much point in trying...

But hey, steelsailor3, we could definitely push that E6300 of yours pretty far if we got some LN2 involved...😁 😁 😁

Liquid nitrogen, (the ultimate cooling agent😁)

I really have to share this because I just received my unopened processor for $333 and honestly, it’s performing even better than the E6850 😲 which is just absolutely wild... 😲 😲 ...

Steve... any word on that answer yet?👍

I really hate to keep bothering him with this, but I’ll get back to it tomorrow... I honestly think he can push past 4.2GHz, though I’ll have to be incredibly careful when I try to pull that off (fingers crossed!)

It’s actually quite fascinating how little this processor runs hot; you could pretty much leave it sitting at 3.7GHz all day, every day, without the temps ever getting out of hand. By the way, just a heads up that Core Temp isn't exactly giving me the full story on the heat levels... 0.94 shows a reading that's lower than what's actually happening, whereas once it hits 0.95.4, the whole system just restarts. 🙂

I'm going to hunt around for a more reliable version of Core Temp, but until then, I think NMonitor is giving me the most accurate read.

This CPU is an absolute beast, truly... specifically with the SL9S7 stepping, which basically means we're looking at a chip capable of hitting 5.5GHz on liquid nitrogen.
