rapiddriver11 said:Maybe there’s something to that... a friend works over at JPMorgan Chase and says they're getting rejected—so it seems like it actually matters whether the card is from JPMorgan Chase or Wells Fargo, even if both are just standard Visa Intel cards?

Ask him when it was issued. 😉 He should just grab a new one.

so does it actually matter if the card is from Chase or JPMorgan Chase, even if they're both Visa Intel?
Nah, doesn't matter.

silvertiger11 said:I mean, it probably depends on which bank issued that debit card. Mine keeps getting rejected everywhere!

Which banks?

Like I said, Visa Electron cards issued by JPMorgan Chase or Wells Fargo work fine online—I know because I use them myself—as long as they aren't more than a year old. Those cards work at basically any online shop.
If yours isn't working at one store, it’s not going to work anywhere else, because that just means it isn't set up for online use. Anyway, you can find all the details in the PayPal thread.

You got it wrong. They accept it at basically every online retailer (and even in physical stores).😉

Just open a foreign currency account at Goldman Sachs or JPMorgan Chase and you'll get a Visa debit card. Toss some cash in there and start shopping. All you need is a driver's license.

Western Union in Banking, Insurance & Loans ·
I don't think you'll owe anything. Whoever's sending it covers the cost. Based on USPS rates, it'd be about $167.

Yeah. But man, those fees they charge are insane. 🙄

Nah 😉

How to send money

1. Head to your local post office that offers western union services and fill out a money transfer form.
2. Hand the completed form and your cash to the agent. Make sure they give you a receipt and a tracking number.
3. Let the person receiving the money know exactly how much you sent.

The recipient can pick up the cash at any western union location worldwide in just a few minutes.

How to receive money

1. Confirm that the funds were sent via the western union network. Your sender will let you know the amount and when it was sent.
2. Once you get the word, hit up a nearby western union agent, show some ID, and fill out a pickup form.
You'll need the sender's full name, the total amount, and the US state where it was sent from.
3. The agent will check the system to verify the transfer and hand over your cash on the spot.

Only the sender covers the fees. 😉

Brandon Price3 said:I have a question—it might sound a bit trivial or even naive—but I’ve been staring at these bank websites trying to decipher their terms and conditions, and frankly, I’m more confused than when I started.

I am looking for a card (it doesn't necessarily need to be a credit card) that meets the following criteria:

1) The ability to withdraw cash from ATMs without being hit by extra fees. This implies a wide network of machines, so I assume big players like Chase or JPMorgan Chase would be the go-to options here.

2) The option to set up installment payments.

I don't need an overdraft line, and I have no intention of traveling internationally.

However, life isn't always simple. My paycheck is currently deposited at Bank X, and I am unable to switch my direct deposit to a different institution (please, don't ask why 🙄). Additionally, I don't actually live at the address listed on my ID right now; I'm staying somewhere else. Will that cause any issues with the application?

Is there any hope for me? 😁

Regarding the address, mine is different too and it didn't cause any issues. They'll just use the address where you're currently living.
As for the card, a Mastercard from Chase or Wells Fargo would work since they offer installment plans now, but you need to have an account with them and regular deposits. Since you said that's not an option, you can skip those.

Your options are basically just Visa or Mastercard if your bank offers them (it'd be easier if you just said which bank you use) because you still need steady income flowing into the account for those.

Since you mentioned wanting to withdraw cash, I'm assuming you aren't looking at Diners Club or American Express (though for those, it doesn't matter which bank you use, just that you have steady income 😉). Those come with pretty heavy cash withdrawal fees, even though you can use them at any ATM😁.

That leaves you with a standard Mastercard from whatever bank holds your checking account. You can hit their ATMs for free, but you'll get charged at others. They probably won't offer installment plans, so that's about it.

Like I said, it'd be way easier if you just named your bank.

So, back in December, they approved me for a $333 overdraft limit for installment purchases (which was a lifesaver when I was a student). Fast forward to today, and I’m checking my Ally Bank app only to see they slashed it down to $67. 😲😲 What am I even supposed to put on installments for $67? 🙄I know they cut limits if you don't use them, but doing that after only a month? How do I get it bumped back up to $333? Should I call them or just head into a branch...?

Also, a quick question for anyone using a student Amex. My statement for last month just generated, and the due date is January 12th. I've got the cash sitting in my checking account ready to go, but it hasn't been pulled yet—it said in the portal that they auto-debit from my account, so I'm confused about 🤷. Does it just hit on the 12th?

Since you’re heading to the States, stick with Visa or Mastercard—they're accepted everywhere. You can usually get them through your bank based on your income or if you set up a CD. They work perfectly fine for online shopping and linking to PayPal too...

I actually use one myself! Just a heads up though, it's basically a debit card for a foreign currency account, not a credit card.
I've used mine to pick up stuff on eBay through PayPal quite a bit.

That's not what he's getting at. It's an Intel card, which is tied directly to the checking account (and the USD account). That's what he was asking about. 🙂

Raymond Clark7 said:That last part is just plain wrong. If your Visa debit card has a CVV, you can buy whatever you want from wherever you want. Some of those Visa cards don't have it printed on the back—but look, there NEEDS to be a seven-digit number on the signature strip, where those last three digits act as your security code.

With Amex, you’ve got those tiny little white numbers on the front, four of them. Diners doesn't really do that, and Mastercard is the same deal with the seven digits where the last three are the check digits. You can do the same thing with a GO card or through Chase, and so on.

Look, a Visa debit card isn't technically a credit card, so you aren't going into overdraft, but you can definitely receive and send money anywhere. To give you a real-world example, I once bought a plane ticket while I was in England; the price was in pounds, the bank handled the exchange rate to US dollars, and when I checked my balance, the amount deducted was converted straight to dollars. It worked perfectly. You can do the exact same thing by registering a card through Alertpay; you just send over your ID, though instead of getting the cash on the card instantly, you'll be waiting about 10 to 15 days for a check to show up in your mailbox, which you then take down to the bank. ☕

Actually, Diners Club does.😉 I’ve got one right here, and it’s got those three digits on the back. It works fine for online shopping too (except for when I'm using PayPal😢)

darkmaker94, I told you to handle this since you aren't me...
c/p

"Dear Mr. Richard Lewis16,

we appreciate you reaching out via email.

The additional overdraft limit for your Visa Installments is granted based on your total allowed overdraft amount, which is reduced by the number of uncashed checks multiplied by $1,000.00.

If you qualify for an overdraft due to your status as a student, per Bank of America policies, you will also be granted the same amount for your Visa Installments overdraft.

Should you require any further details, please feel free to reach our Customer Service department at the phone number listed below.

We appreciate your understanding. Sincerely,

Best regards,

Helen Keller

What am I supposed to do? 🤷

And what’s the bottom line? Can I actually use Visa Installments for my Maestro purchases or not? Based on the email, looks like I can. 🤷

Quick question for anyone with a student checking account or someone working at Bank of America😁. Can students use their Maestro card to pay in installments?
Quick question about credit cards in Banking, Insurance & Loans ·
You can pretty much do that with any charge card. 🤷

What can we even suggest? You already said no to Diners Club, so you're basically looking at American Express (though you'd need an account with JP Morgan Chase for that one), Mastercard, or Visa. Since you've got an account over at Zabiti, you could probably just grab their GO card, but as far as I know, that's revolving credit—I wouldn't recommend it unless you have insane self-control. 😉
