Universal laptop charger recommendations? in Hardware ·
It shouldn't be an issue if everything is running smoothly. That 0.5V difference probably won't hurt the laptop; I guess the current might just climb a bit. Since the power brick has plenty of headroom anyway (5A compared to the 3.42A on the original), it'll likely be fine.

It’s officially happening
Unfortunately, there's not much you can do. From what I know, they have a 45-business-day window for repairs, so it sucks. I doubt they're even being lazy on purpose; it's probably just some messy procedure where they have to ship the card back to the manufacturer and wait for a replacement to arrive. It could easily take 2 or 3 weeks just for parts to show up.

Microsoft case + power supply = 50-$33
Processor = 50-$33
4.5GB DDR2 = 150-$67
HDD = 50-$33
GPU = 100-$50
Motherboard = $50

That’s roughly what I’d put on it, I guess.
Overclocking (Main Thread) in Desktops ·
Maybe it's nothing major, but I guess nobody really stresses over this stuff anyway. If it stays stable, it's fine enough
Not really, HyperX has heat sinks.
Maybe try something like this:

Build #1:

1 x Intel Celeron G1820
1 x Kingston ValueRAM DDR3 (8GB,1600MHz(PC3-12800)) CL11, Retail
1 x GIGABYTE GA-H81M-S2V (S1150,DDR3,VGA/DVI,USB3.0,LAN,SATAIIII) mATX
1 x Patriot SSD Blaze R545/W430, 120GB, 7mm, 2.5"
1 x Fortron HEXA+ 400W, 80+
1 x Zalman T1 PLUS, mATX, USB3.0 black
Total: $656

I guess upgrading the CPU isn't worth it since you probably won't notice the difference for whatever you're doing. Might be better to just spend that on a decent power supply.

Build #2:
1 x Patriot SSD Blaze R545/W430, 120GB, 7mm, 2.5"
1 x Fortron HEXA+ 400W, 80+
1 x Zalman T1 PLUS, mATX, USB3.0 black
1 x AMD CPU kaver Athlon x4 840 (3.8GHz,4MB,65W,FM2+) box, Radeon R7 Series
1 x MSI AMD A88XM-P33 LC Power CPU (SFM2+,DDR3, HDMI/VGA,USB3.0,SATA III,) mATX
1 x CPU Cooler LC-CC-95, Intel/AMD, 90mm 4-pin
2 x Crucial 4GB DDR3 1600 Mhz (PC3-12800) CL11
Total: $873

This seems like a perfect job for an APU—a decent quad-core paired with okay graphics. You'll definitely want dual-channel RAM, and maybe that cooler too.

Build #3:
1 x Fortron HEXA+ 400W, 80+
1 x Zalman T1 PLUS, mATX, USB3.0 black
1 x Intel CPU desktop Core i5-4460 (3.2GHz, 6MB,LGA1150) box
1 x Patriot SSD Blast 240GB, 7mm, 2.5"
1 x Kingston ValueRAM DDR3 (8GB,1600MHz(PC3-12800)) CL11, Retail
1 x Asus B85M-K (S1150,DDR3,VGA/DVI,USB3.0,LAN,SATAIIII) mATX
Total: $1191

You didn't say what this is actually for, but if it's just Microsoft Office, then the i5 is massive overkill... I guess.

Everything is put together at Future-IT.
I guess I’ll throw my two cents in here. If I were building this, I’d probably go with a higher-end power supply. It’s not that Navia can’t handle it, but a better unit might actually last longer—you know, so you don't end up with capacitors popping like popcorn inside the case 😁 and providing more stable voltage and stuff.

As for the PS/2 ports, nobody really uses those anymore, and I doubt you'll even find a motherboard with dual ports these days. Honestly, it’s probably easier to just swap out your peripherals than to hunt down a specific board just to match them.
If they opened up the case, the warranty probably still holds, but they'll definitely charge you for the diagnostic fee. Which, I guess, is fair enough.

It’s just not right that they're being so vague about what's actually going on...
Loud CPU fan noise in Desktops ·
What do you mean by loud? Like, is there a chirping sound?

When it restarts on its own, does it hit you with a BSOD or some kind of error message? Also, what kind of power supply are you running?

I’m not saying an iPhone is total garbage and you should stay far away from them, but I’d definitely say watch your step. Just look at what happened with ED—they started out looking so promising. It was this shiny new shop with killer prices, the CEO was all over the news, they had those big sales and free shipping deals... everything seemed perfect until they suddenly turned out to be complete scammers.

We'll just have to wait and see how the iPhone holds up once they've actually been around for a bit; they're the new kids on the block and still have to prove themselves. Until then, I wouldn't personally recommend them to anyone—kind of like how we don't trust certain other retailers until they've proven they're actually legit and honest.

Honestly, if they were serious about breaking into the US market, they could have at least hired a few people to actually translate the site. Or even just a banner. Having a website running in four different languages is pretty embarrassing for a company trying to make a good first impression.
Dell monitor 24" - flickering issues? in Hardware ·
VGA tends to pick up all kinds of interference since it's analog, so you should probably give a DVI/HDMI converter and cable a shot. Plus, there's always a chance the cable itself is just junk.

So everything goes through Canada, and once they hit that threshold—around $50k I think?—they’ll probably just vanish 😁

Jizz, I wonder if anyone at that company actually speaks American 🤣
electricharbor30 said:I didn't say Sony is the same as Samsung, just that they're likely made in the same Chinese factory, probably just with different specs...

Are you actually sure about that, or are you just guessing?

Half these brands, like Sony or Dell and whatever, are basically just rebranding. Some random outfit produces stuff in a private factory, then these companies just show up, buy a few containers of TVs or smartphones or whatever, and call it a day. They just tell the manufacturer to slap their logo on it and that’s it.

The issue is when a remote or a motherboard dies; finding spare parts is usually a nightmare. Basically, you're buying a pig in a poke, and if it's cheap, the quality is probably crap.

As for the picture quality... it all depends on the panel inside. Samsung and LG are the big names there. There are other famous ones, but there are also Chinese panels—some are decent, some are junk. I doubt Sony is buying Samsung or LG panels; they probably just grab whatever is cheapest to keep costs down... Even Samsung has been known to use cheaper Chinese panels in their low-end stuff because their own tech is too pricey 😁

So, anything goes, but I highly doubt Samsung is outsourcing its production to some tiny, unknown factory...

Maybe it was worth a hundred bucks when it launched a decade ago, but it’s ancient history now. Plus, fans only last so long before they give out...

You can probably snag them on eBay for like ten bucks.

Go ahead and laugh, but doubling the capacity isn't exactly the smartest move here. You're probably better off sticking with a 470uF, and you can grab the 35V version if it actually fits—which, I guess, it should.

I probably wouldn't drop more than 100-$50 on a board that's half-broken anyway.
Quick question about RAM in Hardware ·
Nah, stick it in the motherboard and run memtest. That's really the only way to be sure.
Dell UltraSharp monitor white screen issue in Desktops ·
Why'd you swap out the 470uF for a 1000uF? I guess maybe just try sticking with the 470uF if nothing else fried on you.
