Maybe the people aren't the issue. It’s just that time is moving way too fast lately. 😳

Looks like Amanda Robinson4 is crushing it with The Dark Side of the Moon. I totally bombed, how about you guys?

Éliane Radigue | Feedback Works 1969-1970 [2012]

What’s white in the green woods?
Is it falling snow, or maybe swans?
If it were snow, the ground would be soaked,
if they were swans, they’d have flown away by now;
it’s neither snow nor swans,
just Éliane’s drones...

1. Stress-Osaka (June 1969)
2. Usral (April 1969)
3. Omnht (1970)
4. Vice - Versa, Etc (1970) Mix I
5. Vice - Versa, Etc (1970) Mix II

Stress-Osaka (June 1969)

P.S. These lyrics hit harder because they came out of '69.

Lisa Davis46 said:Look, they're still listing them as two separate albums for Simple Minds today. It doesn't matter if they came out in the same year; each record is its own thing, right? 😛 I'm actually trying to put together that cross thing on the first page of this thread and I can't decide which cover to use. 😁 Both?

The cover from the compilation. 🤔

Dennis Hall41 said:Motown pumped out at least 100 better tracks than anything on this record. Maybe except for Inner City Blues. Being avant-garde is fine and all, but quality—the songwriting, the arrangements, the playing, the vibe—that's what actually counts in my book. Art isn't a competitive sport, so being first doesn't mean you're the best.

I lean more toward that raw, unpolished Stax Records sound myself, but from 1959 through the early 70s, Hitsville USA was dropping at least ten absolute masterpieces every single harvest. Honestly, What's Going On still feels a bit tame compared to how radical this masterpiece actually is, for example.

They probably gave us 1,000. And man, The Temptations were pretty radical too with "Cloud Nine"—it was a solid move, if you ask me.

Dennis Hall41 said:If you want to talk about how avant-garde soul really got ahead of its time, you have to look at Marvin Gaye's What's Going On. But honestly? I’d argue that Sly and the Family Stone's There's a Riot Goin' On—that legendary, dark psychedelic-soul masterpiece released the exact same year—actually takes the lead.

Avant-garde. It’s such a heavy word, isn't it? People toss it around like they actually know what it means. To me, it’s just about being first. Being the one brave enough to step out of line while everyone else is playing it safe. It's that raw, unfiltered energy that pushes everything forward. Honestly, I love it. What's Going On I’ve always had such a massive soft spot for Motown.

Dennis Martin6 said:that says a lot about that whole subgenre, right? If we're calling this avant-garde...😁

Yes, and honestly, it isn't even a genre that leans all that heavily into the avant-garde side of things.

Maybe that sweetness in this Motown classic is actually intentional. It feels like part of the Creator's master plan. 😁

Even within the context of their usual output, which tends to get a little sugary and over-the-top from time to time. What's Going On The bio is way too avant-garde for me. Besides, Marvin Gaye had a rough time getting everything recorded.

You both have a point regarding Karma—well, sort of. For instance, those four identical bass notes Coltrane uses to build the narrative on Acknowledgment show up again on Karma at about the two-minute mark. But then Sanders and the band head off in totally different directions, leaning into those free jazz improvisational styles that trade places with smoother sections. You don't really see that on A Love Supreme. Coltrane's A Love Supreme carries this deep personal stamp from his own life, full of those internal moments of anxiety and redemption. It’s tough to replicate that without it feeling like empty plagiarism. Sure, you can mimic the technique, the motifs, or the themes, but if you aren't tapping into the genuine experience that inspired Coltrane in that exact moment, it just isn't the same. What Sanders is doing on Karma isn't even an attempt to copy him; he's creating a standalone work shaped by his time playing in a band with Coltrane, including that spiritual jazz vibe, but that all happened after A Love Supreme was already out in the world.

Steven Newman50 said:If an album doesn't click for you when it worked for me, maybe it's not even about the music. It might just be the person recommending it. 😁

It could also be the vibe surrounding other albums, or even the voters—we've got some new faces in the mix now. But still...

I used to play that Jadranka track at work whenever clients would ask when their projects would be finished.

Charles Ramos4 said:What you're saying isn't quite right because there were tons of times where lesser-known artists totally outdid the big names. Honestly, I’d go as far as to say that suggesting an album by a famous artist often failed, and they didn't always end up getting the most votes. If you don't believe me, just look back at the old polls and you'll see I'm right. There might even be other forum members who remember the specifics and will back me up on this.

Exactly. I still find it surprising how some of those big-name acts lost out—bands like Pink Floyd, Joy Division, New Order, David Bowie, and Radiohead...

Mark Cruz15 said:Give it a chance, it’s worth it. I keep this CD in my car and have blasted it plenty of times. To me, B#1 and CW are absolute masterpieces, but the rest is mostly just filler. It’s all so generic I can barely remember any of it.

Giving it a shot? Now you’ve got me thinking about that time he did those shoots for Playgirl.

Look, there are definitely other tracks worth checking out. They might not hit the heights of CW or Black no 1, but hey, at the end of the day, it all comes down to personal taste and what clicks with you. Summer Breeze is an excellent track and they handled it really well here. And while Kill All The White People isn't exactly a peak moment, it breaks things up nicely and shifts the vibe for a second. I’d also point out Set ja on Fire for some solid 60s-style rock psychedelia, and Blood & Fire is pretty interesting too.

Mark Cruz15 said:I mean, you can just find photos online if you search for Peter Steele's junk, so why bother? ☕

Look, the guy was huge. By the laws of correlation, he had to be packing it.

Mark Cruz15 said:This album is pretty dull. Tracks two and three are okay, but after that, you just get one or two decent fillers.

After this, you can rest easy knowing I won't be sharing your OnlyFans link with the guys and girls over at the Bensonhoist choir.

quietbison86 said:I think I mixed up Arthur Brown6 and Dennis Martin6, just like I was totally convinced Dark was the one who suggested Type o ' negativ 😁

Look, forget about who suggested what. It just means things are getting interesting. We need to start adding some extra fun to keep things from getting stale, though this thread hasn't really been boring yet. It’s kind of like a typical American marriage after the seventh year. Anyway, you should definitely check out Bloody Kisses by TON if you haven't already. Pure gothic rock, pure industrial. Peter Steele really leveled up his songwriting here. They did a great job covering that Seals & Croftsov hit Summer Breeze, and those background vocals from that lesbian choir over at Bensonhoist are like the cherry on top of this musical sundae.

I wanted to describe my album as a colorful postcard from the Middle East because that’s how it hits me. But since the description says it's more like the Mediterranean, I didn't want to cause any confusion. 😁

That would sound pretty cool, honestly. Plus, some parts of the Middle East overlap with the Eastern Mediterranean anyway, so...

The Cure is dropping next week. It’s a good one. A really solid album, too. I used to spin it all the time back in the day, so revisiting it will be a nice trip down memory lane. Now, Mila’s jazz fusion stuff isn't really my cup of tea. I’ve always preferred her more post-bop or modal vibes. Still, I gave this one my vote because it’s genuinely great. I even split my votes here and there. It's been an interesting week with plenty of big names and heavy-hitting albums.
