I'm feeling a little bit sluggish today, so honestly, we can just push this thread to Wednesday if that works for everyone. 😁

Too much nicotine, Valium, Vicodin, weed, Boner, and booze... and honestly, a little cocaine wouldn't surprise me either.

Or maybe just not enough of everything combined, who knows with those rockers out in CA.

Jason Mendoza said:I know Tiamat, but I haven't really dug deep into them before. Back when I was a weakling, I liked their black metal stuff. I'll give them a proper listen tomorrow (on my expensive home speakers, they'll probably sound properly filthy and lo-fi, exactly how black metal should sound).

If you want that harder, raw Tiamat sound, you have to go back to the start of their discography. They drifted into more experimental territory later on, even did a brief stint with electronic music, which made them a lot softer. Their albums vary wildly in both style and quality. For me, Wildhoney was the turning point—they blended both worlds and added some Pink Floyd psychedelia to the mix. It's easily their best work.

Gaia

A little eco-conscious gothic/doom/progressive/whatever-you-want-to-call-it metal from the 90s.
Week 11 Picks & Discussion... in Philosophy ·
Joseph Murphy10 said:Bravo Spartan, bravo! That’s exactly it! You just nailed what I meant by philosophical self-annihilation. Sure, I’ve taken some fair heat for suggesting that philosophy risks becoming marginal or irrelevant—some people even compare it to a pseudoscience like astrology. I know that’s not the case and there’s a solid rebuttal out there, I just haven't hammered it out into a formal response yet. Honestly, half the STEM crowd thinks the humanities aren't even "real" science anyway—they don't give them the time of day. But hey, does it even matter? We know who we are—or rather, you guys actually know what's up 🙂

Yeah, I think it's vital for philosophy to hold onto its identity. Even with everything changing inside and outside the field, a core part needs to stay constant so it doesn't just vanish. It all comes down to what kind of questions we're asking.

Just to be clear, I'm not a professional philosopher by trade, but I am definitely an enthusiast.

I split the vote with my own take. Most people I talked to were leaning toward those who still champion the big stuff—questions about existence, struggle, being, knowledge, and truth, despite how much the world has changed.

My whole thing is that philosophy needs to stay current. It should move with the times, sure, but it shouldn't just be some leaf blowing around in the wind of whatever the latest trend is. You can't just toss out the fundamental metaphysical questions that have been around since the very beginning.

If we stop asking those deep questions because they don't feel "relevant" or "trendy" anymore, then who's going to step up? If everyone follows the crowd and forgets the basics, those truths just disappear.

I wasn't planning on sharing my votes with everyone, but man, there were some seriously cool and diverse artists this time around. I stumbled upon Beth Orton, who struck me as really gentle and understated at first—which isn't a bad thing at all—but I guess that didn't exactly help her case during the voting process. Still, she’s definitely going on my heavy rotation list for the future.

Dennis Hall41 said:I’ve heard this whole thing about the four-chord trick before. Honestly, being a fresh face in the pop scene, my gut feeling is that the lyrics, the arrangements, and the production are basically just robots making music for other robots. Here’s a quick breakdown if you want the theory behind it: https://www.classicfm.com/discover-m...very-pop-song/

It’s gone even further today. Especially in pop, but it's happening everywhere. People aren't even playing those chords on real instruments anymore. It’s all software suites now. That kills the dynamics. Everything ends up sounding mechanical.

Plus, whenever there's a human element involved, producers go crazy in post-production trying to scrub away every single mistake. It’s a paradox. By fixing everything, they actually kill the music. Those tiny little imperfections are what make us human. They provide the soul and the natural swing. Now, everything is just too polished and boxed-in. It just doesn't sound right.

Dennis Hall41 said:I’ve been diving into some stuff about Jamaica lately. I did take a quick break from my main project—you know, that "Rate This Song" thread that's actually the priority here—but I've been tinkering with this on the side.
Been listening to a lot of this lately. Huge shoutout to Dennis Hall41—I definitely wouldn't have even thought about touching reggae if it wasn't for him. Now I'm looking at my old opinions and realizing they were totally wrong. There is just a massive amount of incredible stuff out there.

Look, I haven't really gone down that deep rabbit hole myself. But listen, if you're looking for good music, there's plenty of soul out there beyond just Bob Marley. You've got legends like Black Uhuru, Burning Spear, and Peter Tosh. There is definitely more to hear.

Once you've finished that, go down the rabbit hole and look for some deeper, more introspective vibes. Check out Scientist, Mad Professor, and Lee Scratch Perry. They're essential.

What's the point of even bothering with it? Honestly. Just feels like a waste of time. 🙂 Honestly, this track might be my absolute favorite thing I've heard in a long time. Just top-tier stuff.

I still remember exactly where I was when *Born to Die* first dropped. It just stuck with me immediately. Everything about it—the production, those melodies, the lyrics—it all just clicked. But man, *Norman Fucking Rockwell* is something else entirely. It’s full of gems. You've got those beautiful ballads, and then there's "Venice Bitch" with that killer, single-synth melodic line. That use of portamento totally won me over right away, especially how seamlessly it fits into the whole track. It felt a little unexpected, but honestly? It works perfectly with the rest of the album.

That cover of Sublime’s "Doin' Time" was spot on. It felt like that perfect, melancholic summer vibe, and she really made the track her own. At the end of the day, music is totally subjective. It all comes down to what you're looking for and whatever mood you happen to be in. But if I had to pick, those two albums would be my top tier. Honestly, some of the stuff on *Ultraviolence* just didn't hit the mark for me.

You guys have been throwing some heavy hitters my way for next week. Carcass, Kraftwerk, Lana Del Rey... now I’m gonna have to dig through my own crates to find something to throw back at you, or maybe I'll just pivot to jazz and hip hop since there's always something good playing there. 😁

Honestly though, aside from Carcass, those picks aren't really my vibe.

"Freaking Out The Neighborhood"
It’s such a vibe.I could listen to this all day.The lyrics are actually pretty funny too.
Just pure relaxation.
classic.

Gets up to no good
Starts freaking out the neighborhood

Dennis Hall41 said:Honestly, sometimes I feel like AI is already being deployed in songwriting, and people are just getting hypnotized by it. There’s no way we can flood the market with this much melodic, production, and lyrical genericness for another ten years straight. It just doesn't add up.

And that's still giving off 90s old school vibes.

Mark Torres14 said:Biology covers ants just as much as it covers humans. Or what, do you think there’s some special branch called "humanology"? This is a philosophical question. What *is* an ant? Biology definitely won't give you that answer.
It's not a fallacy. It just bugs me how obsessed everyone is with human consciousness, the concept of "self," those Kantian questions like "what am I?"... etc. In the end, it all boils down to universal patterns, which leads people to claim—and I'm exaggerating here—that "existence is thinking." The fact is, this world survived for billions of years without humans, and it'll keep spinning long after we're gone.

The old-school German idealists eventually drifted too far into anthropomorphizing the entire universe. But later, the neo-Kantians brought things back down to earth a bit (along with others, like Schopenhauer). As for the British empiricists, they never even bothered to fly off into those kinds of metaphysical galaxies. 😁
Week 11 Picks & Discussion... in Philosophy ·
It’s obviously a huge deal for us, but I honestly think we need to consider how these big questions about existence apply to other living things too. We also have to be careful not to fall into the trap of over-anthropomorphizing everything. If we aren't careful, our own biases might just pull us away from what's actually true.
Week 11 Picks & Discussion... in Philosophy ·
It really just boils down to one question: are we looking at an ontological or an epistemological shift from nothingness into a void? But hey, if you follow absolute idealism, being and thinking are basically the same thing anyway. If that’s true, then there isn't even a difference to begin with.

Dennis Hall41 said:Look, it’s just friendly banter, not actual fighting. It’s just two overly sensitive, old-school romantics poking fun at each other. They're living in the past, honestly.😁

We’ll always need romance. You can't have great art without it. Society has definitely veered off track lately, and frankly, we're all worse off for it.🙂

Anyway, it’s great seeing the "old guard" popping up again. We'll be back to our usual routine of listening together and trading thoughts soon. That's what it's all about.

I have to be fair and say this whole discussion really kicked off with the first album of the week, but things didn't actually start getting heated until we hit the more mature stages of the conversation.

Me too. I'm sitting here waiting for that first week back after the summer break like it's Christmas morning. 👍
