dustyfox60 said:Is there some kind of app on Windows that would give me a voice notification every hour to tell me what time it is? thanks 🙂

There are some, but they aren't free—at least I couldn't find anything for nothing when I did a quick search just now.

Daniel Rodriguez6 said:I tried running the update, but it says I'm already up to date (or whatever). Maybe the drivers are installed since the sound icon is sitting there in the bottom right corner, but I can't adjust the volume—there’s just a little prohibited sign next to it. It was working fine before the installation. Honestly, I'm stumped.

Maybe check the Control Panel - System - Device Manager to see if there are any yellow exclamation marks or error signs popping up.
If everything under Sound, video and Game controllers looks fine, you might want to double-check that the speakers are actually plugged into the right jack on the PC.
On some machines I've used, if nothing is plugged in, Windows shows a red X over the speaker icon in the taskbar by the clock.

Daniel Rodriguez6 said:I'm installing Windows 7 and can't get the sound card working. I don't know the exact model, so I'm stuck. I tried downloading Everest, but it didn't give me any specifics on the audio. I figured I'd try reinstalling the motherboard drivers since the sound might be integrated, but I don't have those details either. I tried running dxdiag, but nothing showed up. Any advice on how to fix this? Also, I'm running the 64-bit version. Is it possible the sound card doesn't support 64-bit Windows? Thanks.

Maybe check Windows Update to see if there are any drivers listed under "Optional updates." Usually, Windows 7 just grabs what it needs through Windows Update automatically. 😉

Taylor Brown said:uh, I guess I have a question too...
why does my mouse occasionally fail to pull down the Taskbar when Chrome is maximized? It seems fine when I'm just browsing folders, though..
I did a fresh install about a week ago, so the OS is pretty much brand new.

Looks like others are running into this too. Here's a fix:

Go to the wrench icon in the upper right hand corner, then scroll down to the "tools" menu, and click on "Extensions." Then click either disable to stop it, or uninstall it all together.

Or just Google "Taskbar thumbnail preview" 😉

Anthony Kern80 said:on my Taskbar, if I have, say, five Word docs open at once, they all just show up as one single icon. when I click it, I have to pick which one I want. is there a way to set it up so I get five separate icons instead, like one for each document?

also, does Windows 7 have a built-in stopwatch somewhere? just something to track time.

Right-click the Taskbar, hit Properties, and under the Taskbar tab look for "taskbar buttons." switch it to "Never combine" and hit OK. that should make every open window its own icon on the Taskbar.

Not sure about the second one. 😢

edit: found some Windows gadgets you can install that work as a stopwatch

boldfox19 said:Hey there.

How are you guys liking this past week? Just wondering generally if it's any better than Windows XP. I'm running Vista right now and honestly, I'm not feeling it at all, so I'm looking to swap it out for something else. Not sure if it even matters, but here are my specs (Dell Latitude):

Maybe an Intel Core 2 Duo? I guess.
Intel Core 2 Duo at 59 °C, I guess.
Griffin 65nm Tech

Maybe I should look into some more RAM.
4.00 GB DDR2 @ 399MHz (6-6-6-18)

Maybe just a motherboard issue, I guess.
Dell Latitude (Socket M2/S1G1)

Maybe some better graphics would help, I guess.
Just seeing a Generic PnP Monitor (1280x800@60Hz) pop up.
512MB NVIDIA GeForce (Dell)

Hard Drives
313GB Seagate Hard Drive

Thanks a ton for the advice. 🙂

It feels pretty similar to Vista, I guess. I wouldn't recommend jumping back to XP though, since that system is kind of ancient by today's standards.
Before you even think about installing XP, I guess you should check if there are actually drivers available for your Dell Latitude. Most manufacturers don't really support XP anymore, so they probably stopped writing drivers for it a long time ago. 🙂

Forgot to mention, I've been using this OS since the day it dropped, and honestly, I'm pretty happy with it. Haven't had any issues at all, I guess. 🙂

urbancrane37 said:Yeah, that's my situation, but check this out: I have an alias set up in Hotmail and MSN Messenger. Hotmail works fine—I can send and receive using that alias—but for some reason, I can't receive anything through Windows Live Mail on that same alias. What gives? I tried messing around with the settings, but nothing's working. Where did I mess up?🤷

Not sure, 🤷
Is it giving you any specific error message?
If you can send stuff but can't get anything back, it sounds like an issue with the incoming (POP3) server settings. Maybe double-check what you have entered there.
Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
uff Leo, you really made this complicated 🙂

Found something online that might help you out. From what I can gather, it looks like you'll need to set up an account and an alias for MSN Messenger.

urbancrane37 said:I can send and receive stuff from Hotmail just fine, but nothing's hitting my Windows Live Mail. It keeps throwing this error at me.

I can't seem to send or receive any messages on... xxxxxxxx@hotmail.com It counts, I guess.
Server error: 4102
Server: 'https://mail.services.live.com/DeltaSync_v2.0.0/Sync.aspx'
Getting that 0x8DE00001 error in Windows Live Mail... I guess it's just one of those things. Maybe try checking your connection settings again?

I've got an email address at mail.att.net and set up a forwarder to my Hotmail account. Hotmail receives everything just fine, but then nothing shows up on my MSN Messenger (on my laptop). Where could I have messed this up? I'm looking at the incoming and outgoing settings, but I can't figure out what this error is even about.🤷

Check this out. Hey. Maybe this tutorial will help you out. 🙂

Check the servers:
The incoming server is... pop3.live.com
The Outgoing server is... smtp.live.com

If you're using AT&T for your home internet, I guess the outgoing server should be mail.att.net.

Maybe try deleting the account and setting it up again from scratch? That might just fix the issue. 🙂

Edward Allen36 said:Will this thing stay active indefinitely, or am I gonna have to reinstall it all the time?🙂 ?

It works fine, but once the 30 days are up, you'll probably get a little pop-up saying the trial expired. Just close the window and it should keep running normally... 🙂

Edward Allen36 said:Hey guys, which version of WinRAR are you all using? The ones I tried wouldn't even install properly. Does it have to be the full version or something?...

Just head over to this page and grab whichever version you want...
They're just trial versions, though, so I guess you'll get a pop-up after a month telling you it's a trial.😁

Taylor Brown said:Why am I getting an "audio service not running" error and a red "x" over my speaker icon when the sound actually works?
Everything was fine before, I'm on a 64-bit version of Windows.

That happens to me sometimes too. Nothing to worry about, really—the red x usually goes away after a quick restart. 🙂

Olivia Johnson63 said:I don't see Properties, just Personalization. They say it's basically the same as Home, just meant for systems with less RAM.

Maybe don't click the Desktop icon, try clicking the Computer icon instead... if you don't have it on your Desktop, maybe try
Start - Control Panel - System (that should show which Windows edition you're running)... 😉

Taylor Morales31 said:Since I see you can do a full upgrade from version 7 to 8—keeping all my apps, settings, and files intact--

is it actually smart to do this if everything is working fine right now? Has anyone here tried it? Or should I just stay put and not tempt fate??

Man, I don't know why I always feel the urge to mess with stuff and cause problems...

Maybe I should just leave things alone for a bit. 😁

If you have some space on another partition, you could make a backup image (maybe using Acronis True Image). Then go ahead with the upgrade to 8, and if things go sideways or you just hate it, you can use an Acronis bootable CD to restore everything back to the image you made. 🙂

Raymond Adams48 said:I've got 16 GB of RAM, but XP only shows 4 GB. I have the exact same setup on my other PC running the same OS and it works fine
but why is it acting up here?

Windows 7 is actually a solid OS.
Once you install it, the system usually spends some time running System Restore points, file indexing, and a bunch of other background stuff. I guess you should just give it a day or two to settle down before checking if your CPU usage looks normal at idle.

My Windows 7 has been running like a dream since the day it first launched. 🙂

Noah Thompson said:but will I be able to do what I asked?

thanks

Just watch yourself with that partitioning stuff. If you haven't done this before... you'll probably mess something up and end up losing all your data.😢

My advice would be to use a third-party tool to set up the partitions first. Once you've carved out a blank space for Windows, then you can start the installation.
I don't remember perfectly, but I'm pretty sure you can't really do it during the actual Windows installation itself.🤷

I guess this link for the drivers might be better, since it goes straight to the download page 🙂

Dennis Adams said:So, I just ordered a laptop with 8 GB of RAM, and since we all know 32-bit systems can't really touch more than 4 GB... well, I know there isn't much software out there right now that actually needs a full 8 GB. I'm thinking about making the jump from Windows XP to Windows 7 (the 64-bit version), and I was wondering if that's actually worth it. Could you guys list some pros and cons of Windows 7 (64-bit) compared to XP (32-bit)? I mean, sure, the big plus is more RAM support, but I'm mostly worried about compatibility—that was such a headache when 7 first came out. If things are still bad enough that I can't run 90% of my programs, I might just stick with XP. Anyway, let me know what you think...

I don't see any reason why you wouldn't move over to Windows 7 (specifically the 64-bit version).
Everything seems compatible these days, everything works, so there's probably nothing to worry about.

You can find answers to some common questions regarding the differences between 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7 here.
