Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
Roger Brown50 said:I've got one more question 😁 I installed Windows 7 and saw there are 28 days left to activate, so I was wondering what happens once those 28 days are up.

The OS might shut down on you🙂

You can basically extend that activation three times for 30 days each, here's how:

If you're missing the menu, here's how to fix it:

And if you want Firefox, just type Firefox into the address bar and hit enter, then IE should show you what you need to download and install 🙂
Dual booting on one PC? :/ in Software ·
swiftdriver30 said:I was wondering if I could install Mac OS X on my Windows 7 machine for a dual boot setup. I tried it yesterday using some iDeneb 10.5.5 and 10.5.7 builds, but my PC just freezes up during the Mac boot process... any idea why? (I know this isn't strictly about Windows 7, but I couldn't find a specific thread on the US forums here... I'm just curious if an Intel Core 2 quad can actually run Mac OS X... and how to fix this. Thanks)

You might find more info on installing Mac OS X on a PC at these links:

Donna Martin86 said:One more thing—I've got Imported Folders under storage Folders 1 and 2 now, but they're totally empty. Nothing's opening, I guess.😕

Looks like Microsoft really messed something up here, but I think I found a fix on a forum. Apparently, if you click that little arrow next to the Imported Folders under storage Folders, the messages should pop up. Maybe?

Original poruka:

Maybe try checking if those Imported Folders under storage Folders are actually showing up right. I guess it might just be a glitch with how things are being indexed, but who knows.

My bad if this sounds super obvious or if you've already covered it, but you mentioned...

And it's just cluttering things up by creating Imported Folders under storage Folders, I guess.

If you click through those Imported Folders under storage Folders, it just says "There are no items in this view." I guess. There should be a little arrow next to that "Imported Folders under storage Folders" icon. If you click it, I guess it should expand and show the subfolder. It’s probably tied to your email address; if you just click the little arrow next to that one, I guess your messages should show up in there.

My bad if someone already mentioned this—it might seem pretty obvious. Honestly, I think the UI design is kind of a mess; you click a folder and assume the messages didn't import, when really you probably just need to hit that little arrow next to it.

Donna Martin86 said:2. I uninstalled that one and installed the one you mentioned. Done and dusted. If it works for you and them, then it's perfect for me!
3. I set up that notification too.

I somehow managed to overcomplicate this whole Outlook thing around 3 PM. I tried using a USB drive eventually, but I guess the program just won't read it or something? I'll give it another shot today. I moved everything except what wasn't needed, but I left Outlook behind.

I'm not really sure how you made it so complicated. You just follow those instructions driftingnomad68 linked for you. Find the file in the folder where Outlook Express keeps all your emails and copy it onto a USB, for example. Then, it’s probably best to copy that file from the USB to the desktop of your new PC or into your Documents folder, and then just run the import in Windows Live Mail like the guide says.
I've done this a few times now and it usually goes pretty smoothly. Hopefully, you'll get it sorted too. 🙂

Donna Martin86 said:I think I get everything now (mostly?), but my last post was probably a bit rushed. I didn't have Microsoft Office before, but I managed to get it, so things are looking good there.

1. Now I'm running into an email issue. I've got Outlook Express on my old PC, and on this new one, I set up Windows Live Mail. It syncs up fine, so I see my emails on both as soon as I log in. What I really want to know is how to move all those old emails from Outlook Express over to Windows Live Mail.
2. Also, this trial antivirus expires in about 20 days. Any advice? Should I just grab Avast? If I download it now, will they give me any trouble, or should I just wait until the current one runs out?
3. How do you get that notification on the taskbar when a new email arrives?

Thanks!

1. driftingnomad68 replied... 🙂
2. driftingnomad68 replied 🙂 Just to add to that, I'd say uninstall that trial antivirus first, then go ahead and install Microsoft Security Essentials. It's a great Microsoft antivirus. I've used it since day one and never had an issue, plus it doesn't cost anything. 🙂
3. I usually keep my email client open and set to check for messages every five minutes, so whenever something comes in, that little envelope icon pops up near the clock in the bottom right. (I use "Outlook" for my email). 🙂

Donna Martin86 said:1. We'll deal with moving emails and files later (hopefully).
2. I had WLM right there in the bundle, so I didn't have to grab it online. I assume that isn't something I'll have to pay for down the road either. I figured if I bought a laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed, I just install it and that's it—paid once and done? Tell me I'm right.

3.

From what I can tell, you might have missed a bit in my post. I was just saying that when you buy computers with Windows, they usually come with a 60-day trial of Microsoft Office pre-installed.
You paid for Windows, so it's yours and it's legal, but if you see an icon for Office on your desktop, it's probably just that 60-day trial version. 🙂

But like Joshua Garcia3 suggested, you could always just download LibreOffice for free. 🙂

PS: Glad you managed to get everything sorted out on your own. 😉

Everything is already installed on your laptop. You can check the sticker on the bottom to see which version of Windows 7 you're running. I'm guessing it's one of the cheaper versions! 🙂
The CD is mostly there if your Windows ever crashes and you need to run a Recovery to get everything back to how it was when you first bought it.
For moving your files, a USB stick is probably the easiest way to go. Emails might be a bit trickier depending on what software you're using. Outlook Express isn't really a thing in Windows 7 anymore; its replacement is Windows Live Mail, which you can grab for free online. If you happen to be using MS Outlook from an Office suite, it’s easier—you just export the Outlook.pst file from the old machine and import it onto the new one.
I'm assuming your new laptop comes with Office - home and student pre-installed, but it's likely just a 60 day trial. After two months, it'll stop working and ask you to register or buy it. 🙂

Donna Martin86 said:I picked up a Dell 5030 with Windows 7 pre-installed. I couldn't get to it yesterday, and I won't have time today either (work, a game, etc.), and honestly, I'm a total newbie at this stuff. Question: since it comes with it already on there, can I just set it up myself, or should I call a pro? I have no clue how to do it even though I saw the manual. I don't want to mess something up and then just be staring at the screen cluelessly. Thanks in advance!

If you know enough English (assuming it’s set to English), you should be fine doing it yourself. It might ask you to pick a keyboard layout (US), a time zone (Eastern Time), and to create a username and maybe a password, which you'd have to type in every time you boot up Windows.

Nothing too complicated 🙂

Honestly, I haven't seen any slowdown even after a full year. I have a ton of programs installed (though zero games), and I just run Microsoft Security Essentials for protection along with Malwarebytes for occasional scans, which never turn up anything. I guess I can't really get behind what gentleowl66 is saying about finding viruses every single day being "normal." 🙂

@Nathan Castillo16/">@@Nathan Castillo16 - Did you get an installation DVD for Windows Vista when you bought the laptop?

If you did, you can find the reinstall steps right here:
http://www.emachines.com/faq/vista/7515418su539.html

If there wasn't a DVD, the installation might have been on a hidden partition that maybe the guy who set up your Windows XP wiped out, which would mean you can't really get back to the original Windows Vista this way. 😢

Here are some more instructions for the reinstall (in English):

You might be able to order an installation disc if you didn't come with one:

I've already got the file in ISO format and now I just want to put it on a DVD.. how do I burn it?
here's a link with a screenshot so it's easier to explain: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images...601183504.png/
I picked the first option but it keeps saying it's not compatible or something..

I use Ashampoo myself and I've never really had issues burning ISO files. I usually do exactly what you described. Maybe if you could post the specific error message, it might make things a bit clearer. 🙂

Jamie Cox29 said:Hey, can someone help me out? On Windows 7, my folders are all grouping together on the taskbar. How do I get them to show up individually?
Thanks!

Just right-click Taskbar - Properties and look under "Taskbar Buttons." You can pick "never Combine," or just set it like I did in my screenshot here 🙂

Honestly, looking at your questions, I’d probably let someone else handle this if I were you—someone who actually knows their way around a PC. 🙂

Maybe try Googling some tutorials first to see the difference between a clean install and just doing an upgrade on your current OS. 🙂

What even is that? Is it some kind of serious error or what?
How do I fix this??

electricmarlin18 said:While I was trying to reinstall the OS in Safe Mode yesterday, the PC started loading Windows Files—specifically drivers in \Windows\system32\DRIVERS and all those *.sys files. Then the blue screen pops up again and the laptop just keeps rebooting itself. (It happened a few times until I finally lost my cool).
Somehow, I actually managed to get into Safe Mode today. Any ideas?

Maybe try System Restore?! Go to Start - Programs - Accessories - system Tools - system Restore

Just roll it back to an earlier date when everything was running fine. 🙂

[Edit] I did a little digging online and found some info suggesting the graphics card drivers might be the culprit.
Maybe check the manufacturer's site for the latest drivers and try installing those.

Taylor Doyle79 said:Internet Explorer 9 is actually pretty great, feels like I suddenly have way more screen space 😁
than before. I guess the only thing (for now 😬) bothering me is that it doesn't have that "open in new tab" option when I right-click like Firefox does 🤔

Wait, what do you mean it doesn't?
I just right-clicked a page number on this thread and "Open in new tab" popped right up 🙂

It works fine inside a specific folder. I guess we should give the Microsoft devs some credit.

I'm not entirely sure I follow what's going on, but maybe you accidentally turned on auto Arrange Icons?
Right-click the desktop and hit View - auto Arrange Icons.
