Just a little venting about this topic

it's just a limitation of 32-bit Windows, I guess.
Quick question about Word 2003 in Software ·
Elizabeth Baker81 said:I'm not exactly a pro when it comes to Word or any of those editing tools, and we've been using Word 2003 in my computer class—only it's all in American. The version I have at home is in English, so I was wondering if there's any way to view Language Interface pack for it? It would probably be a lot easier and faster for me to navigate if it were in American.😕😕😕

It won't work; you pretty much need to have the American version of Office installed. 😢

Maybe you're just missing a motherboard chipset driver. 🤷

I guess my advice would be to just hit up the motherboard manufacturer's website and see if they have any Windows 7 drivers listed for that specific board. You should probably install those regardless of whatever Windows 7 decided to grab on its own.

I did manage to get FIFA 10 and PES 2010 working fine, though. So, my question is, what about everything else? Will newer or even older games actually work on 7?

For those older titles—just right-click the exe file, go to Compatibility, check the box for Windows XP SP3, hit Apply, and you should be good to go.
Maybe try installing some older games first and let us know how it turns out 🙂

I tried running Windows 7 64-bit, but honestly, I didn't notice much of a speed boost over the 32-bit version. I ended up switching back because so many programs just aren't built for 64-bit Windows yet, and I ran into some annoying driver issues. It wasn't like the whole system would crash, but certain apps were pretty glitchy and would hang quite often.
For me, the 32-bit version still feels like the better way to go. 🙂(Intel Core 2 duo E6300, 4 GB RAM).

I've been messing around with the Windows 7 beta since the beginning, and I gotta say, the OS is pretty great. It feels stable, fast, looks sharp, and just feels more advanced. Honestly, it’s not until I jump back onto a machine running Windows XP that I realize how much better the little details are handled in Windows 7. That's just my take, though. I’m a bit of a tech geek and love playing with new stuff, so maybe I'm not the most unbiased source. 🙂

So, you just boot from a DVD, pop in the Windows 7 disc, and wait for the installer to kick in. You hit Install, let it find your hard drive, pick the right partition, and maybe hit Delete if you need to clear things out first. Then you just click Next and wait for it to copy everything over. Depending on how fast your PC is, the whole thing usually takes anywhere from 15 to about 40 minutes. It’ll restart a few times, and you might see the screen go black for a second while it handles the graphics drivers, but yeah, that’s basically it.
Just make sure you back up your files and don't accidentally wipe the wrong partition if you're running multiple ones. 😢
Everyone’s got their own favorites.
I just typed "antivirus reviews" into Google and ended up on a bunch of different sites where every single one of them picks a different winner for number one. 🙂

According to CNET, http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6600_7-6655968-1.html McAfee is the top choice.
Honestly, I've messed around with most of the big names out there, and I guess I'm most satisfied with McAfee.
But hey, like I said, everyone has their own preference. 🙂
I'd probably go with McAfee. It's pretty fast, does its job, and doesn't really hog all your system resources. It's got an American interface too.
Link for the trial version (works for 30 days):

And here's a decent list of antivirus software (looks like Symantec is #1, followed by McAfee, then McAfee).

I used to have them somewhere—honestly, I can't even remember where the discs went or which version of the software I was running. 😢

If I remember right, there are actually quite a few different levels in the program, ranging from beginner to advanced...
If you’ve got the drive and the time, you can definitely learn it. Though how well you pick it up is kind of subjective, I guess. Some people prefer hands-on training, while others lean toward software where they can just set their own pace. 🙂

Norton
Malwarebytes
Maybe Spybot is okay, I guess.

Info about Teacher in Software ·
I picked up a Teacher about two years ago, but after I upgraded my PC, the activation key just stopped working. I tried calling them—during their crazy business hours—but couldn't get through, so I just sent an email to explain what happened.
They ended up asking me to send over a receipt to prove I actually bought the components.
After ten days of dealing with all that nonsense, they finally sent me a new activation code. At that point, I told them I'm done buying their software.
I swap out parts in my rig pretty often, and I really don't feel like jumping through those hoops every single time. 😠
How to merge partitions in Software ·
Just wanted to say, watch your step. I’ve done this a hundred times without a hitch, but then the 101st time goes sideways. You can never be too careful, I guess. 😁
How to merge partitions in Software ·
Everything went sideways with my FAT table after a reboot. I ended up using Recuva to scan the drive and try to pull whatever data it could find onto my other disk, and luckily, it actually worked.
Basically, I was resizing my partitions—expanding the C: drive and shrinking D:—and the system asked for a restart. That's when things hit the fan; the FAT table got totally trashed, and now nothing seems to work. It won't even recognize the partitions, it just keeps telling me I have to format the disk.

Acronis works fine, but there are no guarantees. I’ve used it plenty of times without an issue, until one day...
I was helping a guy expand his system partition (C:) by taking space from his storage drive (D:). Everything seemed to be going smoothly; it finished the task, told him he needed a reboot, and restarted...
Five minutes pass, then ten, then fifteen—that's when the panic starts setting in because I hadn't backed anything up—then twenty. Finally, after thirty minutes of nothing, I just force-shutdown the machine. When I turned it back on, it was stuck at the command prompt.
I pulled the drive, took it home, hooked it up to my own rig, and used Recuva to try and pull the data off. I managed to save almost everything, except for the files where the client insisted on using special characters in the filenames. (I told him a hundred times not to use those non-standard characters, but nobody ever listens)
So instead of a quick ten-minute job, I wasted the entire afternoon. Fuck...
Since then, it's always data to a second drive first, then the fancy partitioning stuff later.
How to open WMV files? in Software ·
Nicholas Brown7 said:I grabbed a movie in wmv format and tried opening it with BSPlayer, but nothing happens. Is there a specific program I should be using for this?😕

I've downloaded some wmv files before too. Usually, you just fire up Windows Media Player and it tells you the file is protected and needs permission. It tries to connect to something, and if you click "Yes" a couple of times thinking it's fine, you basically just invited a Trojan right onto your system.😢
