Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
Lawrence Wood90 said:In Device Manager under "other devices," I've got an unknown device asking for a driver update (acpi / atk 0110 ), but when I try searching automatically, nothing comes up. I'm not really sure what's going on here—can anyone help me figure out what this actually is??

Maybe check here for a fix! 🙂

This link might have the driver you need.

I was actually hoping to learn how to fix this for next time... since I have zero clue which specific component is missing its drivers...
Is there any way to look it up "manually" and then install it?!

Maybe give HP Support Assistant a shot?

Or you could just hit up the HP support site, find your specific laptop model, and grab all the drivers. If you install them one by one, one of them will probably sort out that mystery device for you! 🙂

jadesurfer5 said:I could use some help. I just put Windows 7 on an HP laptop... and now there's a yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager. It's sitting under Other Devices - Unknown Device and I can't seem to fix it... any idea what's going on or how to clear it up? Everything else seems fine, I guess.
Thanks in advance!

Maybe try running HP Softpaq download manager. It should scan the system and hopefully find whatever drivers you're missing.

Your PC sees all 4 GB, but it’s only actually using 3.2 GB—someone probably mentioned that already. It shows AVAILABLE at 3,129 MB, with 2,537 MB being FREE.

The final score is basically determined by your weakest link, which in your case is the hard drive, sitting at a 5.9. 🙂

Hey, did you get a chance to check out those tips I sent over in that other link?

Noah Morgan34 said:So I've run into a bit of an issue.🙂 Every time I try to copy a file, I get this pop-up saying "Access Denied!"
It says: "You need administrator permission to copy this file"
I'm pretty lost here 🤷 and I've got three options:
Continue, Skip, Cancel
When I hit Continue, I just get another window like this one:
🙂 By the way, I only have one user account on Windows 7. Any idea how I can actually get this copied?

Maybe give this little tool a shot, might help!

And here are some tips that might work too:

Zachary Stewart2 said:What happens if I run a check on my USB drive and it cuts out halfway through? Now some files won't even open. I'm kind of panicking because this stuff is incredibly important to me.

I think I get what you're asking, I guess.
The "check now" tool basically scans for errors and tries to fix them.
If it's cutting out mid-way, your thumb drive might be dying.
Maybe try plugging it into a different PC?
If that doesn't work and the files are a big deal, you could probably just Google "USB flash drive recovery." There's a bunch of software out there—some are free, others cost a bit. 🙂

swiftdriver30 said:I already switched over to XP and got everything installed without even bothering with backups. I didn't really have anything worth saving, anyway. xD Oh yeah, what a week—not a single standard driver would work, but on XP, they were up and running instantly. 🙂

That's too bad 😢 I think you gave up a bit too early.
I find it hard to believe those driver issues couldn't be fixed on Windows 7.
Good luck with XP, though it feels like taking two steps backward to me. 🙂

if it actually works.... ??

Did you try plugging it into a different USB port???
Maybe see what it says when you click that link.

swiftdriver30 said:I lost the CD somewhere, but honestly, a fresh driver is probably better than an old one anyway. :'D I tried running it, but when it starts installing, it just shows this screen saying... connect the printer and turn it on, then it'll automatically find a port and finish up. But for me, it just sits there finding nothing. :S And I can't get it to work manually either. :S I don't get it! It would've worked 100% on Windows XP.

Is the printer actually plugged in while you're running the installer?
Usually, you run the setup without the printer connected, and then you plug it in right when the software asks you to, kind of like what you described.

Maybe try uninstalling whatever Epson stuff you have via the Control Panel (Add/Remove Programs), unplug the printer, reboot your PC, and then try the installation again—only plugging the printer in when the program tells you to.

Anthony Rogers27 said:I try to keep things light from the start—no bloatware, no random games, nothing extra. I just want to keep the machine fast and avoid conflicts. Honestly, the only thing I really notice slowing down is when I run Java; everything else seems fine.
Guess I'll just keep Aero turned off then.

Let's try this instead. Maybe try uninstalling Java and see if that changes anything.
I think I read somewhere that people were mostly having issues if they installed some kind of beta version of Java. But hey, don't quote me on that.
Just try ditching Java for a bit and see if it helps. You can always reinstall it later. 🙂

Anthony Rogers27 said:Right now I'm sitting at 45% RAM usage—about 797 MB used and 970 MB free. I've got 7 Firefox tabs open, a Java app, some other random program, and Resource Monitor running to keep an eye on things. Firefox is eating most of it, then Java, then some svchost process, etc. Everything runs fine, but I guess if I turned on Aero, everything would probably slow down noticeably.

Does Aero actually slow things down for you?

Honestly, 2 GB should be plenty for Windows 7. Maybe you're just stuck with a weak graphics card? That might be what's messing with you. 🙂
Check your system rating and see which part is dragging. Control Panel

Try using different tools. Taylor Morales31 uses CPU-Z, and you're using that one Fosna recommended.
Just grab CPU-Z and run an analysis with it.

Though, looking at your report, casualbear17, your C: drive usage is getting pretty critical. You've only got about 3 GB left. I have a feeling if you don't clear some space or move stuff over to the D: drive soon, Windows might just crash on you.

Man, granitegull51, you're really stuck in the past. Tech just moves forward whether you like it or not. 😢
Keep rocking Windows XP if that's your thing, but maybe don't tell everyone else to ditch modern tech.

My rig has 4 GB of RAM and 2 TB of storage, and honestly, I don't even care how much Windows 7 hogs memory or disk space, or if it's optimized. I've been running Windows 7 32-bit on this since day one, just waiting for it to freeze or crash so I can finally wipe it and go 64-bit, but it just won't happen... It runs smooth as butter. Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, Corel, and a bunch of other random junk—everything works perfectly without any crashes or freezes... "terrifying," right?
The only thing giving me grief is my Canon printer. It's a 6-year-old Laser printer, and those jerks at Canon refuse to write 64-bit drivers for it. I hate the idea of tossing it and buying a new one since it still works great 🙂
But I guess time's caught up with it, so I'll probably have to upgrade to something newer soon.

Like Jonathan Morris40 was saying, Windows 7 is actually a solid OS and there's really no reason not to use it. It feels way more advanced than Windows XP, and I guess everything just runs smoother 😬

Zachary Stewart2 said:Gotcha. Just wondering why you mentioned ASUS. My board is actually a Gigabyte, from what I can tell. I couldn't find anything for my specific model on that ASUS link you sent.

This is my motherboard: http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/com...ents&os=64-bit Should be compatible?

Looks like it does, based on that link. 🙂
You should find the drivers for yours right here:

Eset Nod 32 flags a virus on that link when you go to download it.🙂

I've been using this same program for ages and I'm pretty happy with it.

I use MS Security Essentials—honestly, I think it's better than the NOD software I used to have—and I haven't had any issues. It might be that during installation it tries to bundle the "Babylon toolbar," which is probably why NOD is flagging it as junk.

I also use 🙂Ashampoo
and it's pretty solid; it's lightweight, easy to install, and just works. You can grab it here

Gerald White44 said:I'm kind of lost on where to ask this, but I've got Windows 7, and it won't let me burn any CDs—it just ejects them after a few seconds, though they aren't empty. Does anyone know a good program I could use to actually burn stuff normally?

I'd probably go with Ashampoo Burning studio Free. You can grab it here

swiftdriver30 said:thanks for the encouragement. really. lol

Not trying to be mean, just giving you the reality check here. I wasted countless hours trying to get Windows running on a custom build. I basically lived on tech forums just trying to patch one error after another.
Windows isn't designed to run on random hardware setups, so you have to mess with the installation files just to make it even possible.
The OS is built for specific hardware configurations, so any unsupported component in your rig is probably going to throw a wrench in the works during setup.

Don't want to bum you out, but maybe just brace yourself for the grind 🙂. Good luck with everything 🙂

swiftdriver30 said:The ASRock G31M-GS! ... I tried again and it just won't work... :S I keep getting errors constantly while everyone else seems fine—nothing works for me. -.-''

I'm not totally sure an ASRock board is the best way to go if you want to install macOS X.
In my experience, it took me about five or six tries just to get a successful installation on a PC, and even then, I ran into issues with certain drivers (like display and printer). Plus, the system didn't feel quite like a real Mac; it used to crash quite a bit.
Eventually, I decided to save myself the headache and just bought a genuine Mac. Now I have a MacBook Pro, and you can actually feel the difference when using macOS. 😬
