Album of the week in Music ·
Fripp / Sylvian! 🙂

For me, their absolute best—and definitely my favorite—collaboration has to be that live album, 'damage'.

Not really a suggestion...

Ashley Grant66 said:Recently, Lisa Davis46 introduced me to the Discipline of Crimson album. this apparatus To me, it sounds like something they just listened to on repeat until it finally stuck, and then they copied it later. I guess. 😁 And it's not just them! I listen to her all the time, seriously.

🙂
After those random comments about the Thrak topic, I actually thought you might really dig that album! 🙂
I guess I'll get around to checking out The Mars Volta eventually. I know a few people who are huge fans of both them and KC.

Ashley Grant66 said:I've always kind of felt like Steely Dan was just "dad music." Maybe that’s just me, I guess. 😁I mean, there's definitely some beauty in it, I guess...

Their Apa of Naples is something else. I actually thought about suggesting it here ever since Swans were the album of the week, but honestly, I doubt it would have even made the cut.

Yeah, they kind of are. My last boss used to blast them in the office all the time, especially that new album from this week.
I guess I’m pretty used to that kind of grit and dust in the production... honestly, I think it sounds great!

Look, about what you said regarding not suggesting that album because you think it won't fly—please, just put it out there anyway. Especially since it's the day before tomorrow... because we know another surprise is coming. 😉

Steven Newman50 said:I'm just sitting here waiting for someone else to make a suggestion. If there’s one thing I’ve been really digging lately, it’s prog. I haven't actually listened to enough Crimson to feel like I could pull off making the opening post, even though they’re great.😉

Alright, I'm going to suggest Crimson... maybe right in that first regular week of January!
🙂

Our next big, joyful Christmas album reveal is coming tomorrow, Wednesday.
Look, can we all just hold off on the suggestions until Thursday? I’m looking at you, Arthur Brown6, you're being way too impatient.

If you thought we weren't going to bring up Mr. Brian Eno again anytime soon, you were wrong... I guess we have to.
He actually had his hands all over this, but mostly just during the demo stage . Sometimes, honestly, things turn out better without him involved at the end.

I listened to a fair amount of Hildur Guđnadottir-Chernobyl after she picked up that Emmy last year... and then maybe a Grammy or something like that later on.

Hildur actually used field recordings as the foundation for building her compositions. I was reading about how she did it—she went out to the actual site of the nuclear plant to capture authentic sounds; frequencies, wails, water dripping, that heavy atmosphere... all while working with Chris Watson, who captures those incredibly subtle (and quiet, hidden) nature sounds for David Attenborough documentaries...

So, I’m not really sure how to label the genre. It’s got industrial elements because things like clanging metal or creaking doors become part of the music, there's electronica and classical, and definitely ambient... yet it feels clean and minimal. But she managed to create music that powerfully recreates the feeling of that specific space (and the disaster itself), which I thought was just fantastic. It reminded me of Arvo Pärt quite a few times. It speaks to me.

And then redbear12 just drops this at the end.
That soundtrack she did is actually incredible...

You're the last one. 🙂

Soul Matters (2017) in Movies ·
Steven Newman50, I really dig this review of yours. 🙂 Maybe I’ll actually get around to watching it tomorrow, I'm pretty curious now. Honestly, I only added this movie to my watchlist because I've heard the director's name pop up so many times, even though I haven't seen a single thing she's done...

Steven Newman50 said:the corporate setting which adds a nice touch to the plot (...)

I don't know if I can even stomach watching this, especially since movies almost never show scenes like this realistically. They always sugarcoat reality... but hey, maybe it'll surprise me.
Now Playing in Music ·
I just picked up three different books on Bowie, and honestly, they couldn't be more different...
(It’s almost like they’re all talking about completely different people. 😁)

There are some pretty fascinating stories woven together around this specific album and track:

I guess I have to give a nod to Mr. B. here for his work as the producer (and multi-instrumentalist).

Captain Beefheart in Music ·
Since I was already building on Hollis's thread, here are some interesting 10 commandments from the Captain
...

“Captain Beefheart’s 10 Commandments of Guitar Playing”
The following sound advice can be found in the book Rolling Ston ’ Alt-Rock-A-Rama, 1996.

1. Listen to The birds that ’
That’s where all the music comes from. Birds know everything about how it should sound and where that sound should come from. And watch hummingbirds. They fly really fast, but a lot of times they aren’t going anywhere.

2. Your guitar is not really a guitar
Your guitar is a divining rod. Use it to find spirits in the other world and bring them over. A guitar is also a fishing rod. If you’re good, you’ll land a big one.

3. Practice in front of a bush
Wait until the moon is out, then go outside, eat a multi-grained bread and play your guitar to a bush. If the bush doesn’t shake, eat another piece of bread.

4. Walk with the devil
Old Delta blues players referred to guitar amplifiers as the “devil box.” And they were right. You have to be an equal opportunity employer in terms of who you’re brining over from the other side. Electricity attracts devils and demons. Other instruments attract other spirits. An acoustic guitar attracts Casper. A mandolin attracts Wendy. But an electric guitar attracts Beelzebub.

5. If you’re guilty of thinking, you’re out
If your brain is part of the process, you’re missing it. You should play like a drowning man, struggling to reach shore. If you can trap that feeling, then you have something that is fur bearing.

6. Never point your guitar at anyone
Your instrument has more clout than lightning. Just hit a big chord then run outside to hear it. But make sure you are not standing in an open field.

7. Always carry a church key
That’s your key-man clause. Like One String biti Sam. He’s one. He was a Detroit street musician who played in the fifties on a homemade instrument. His song “ i need a Hundred Dollars is warm pie. Another Key to The church is Hubert Sumlin , Howlin ’ Wolf ’ guitar player. He just stands there like the Statue of Liberty — making you want to look up her dress the whole time to see how he’s doing it.

8. Don’t wipe the sweat off your instrument
You need that stink on there. Then you have to get that stink onto your music.

9. Keep your guitar in a dark place
When you’re not playing your guitar, cover it and keep it in a dark place. If you don’t play your guitar for more than a day, be sure you put a saucer of water in with it.

10. You gotta have a hood for your engine
Keep that hat on. A hat is a pressure cooker. If you have a roof on your house, the hot air can’t escape. Even a lima bean has to have a piece of wet paper around it to make it grow.

“Though they bear numbers, they are not arranged heirarchically — each Commandment has equal import.”

and another great interview:

"I like the blues. I like blues, but I like aquamarines just as well, and all other colors."

I've never actually listened to them, but I can already tell I'll be spinning them regardless of how they do in the poll. They seem pretty interesting just from a first listen.

🙂
Man! I am so jealous! (On a first listen, at least.) 🙂

Karen Kelly35 said:What a drag this week has been, but man, you guys suggested some killer albums. No matter which one ends up being the theme, I'm definitely going to be listening to several of these over the next few days and beyond...

Liza Minnelli - Handbag (1992) - Uh, well, this one's interesting too; women are kind of underrepresented here, so that's a bonus for the suggestion. I'll definitely give it a spin.

John, you gotta suggest albums more often. 😉 I remember that one time. You write great reviews and you caught us all off guard with your pace. It's not just that women aren't represented enough in the suggestions, it's that there just aren't enough suggestions coming from them...

Great combo + an outfit perfect for self-isolation.
🙂

Honestly, the whole 'clear spot' is pure love...
And that first album! Man, that's basically a miracle.

Exactly! Uh, it’s gonna be tight. The Band is The Band! They absolutely have to be on my list. 🙂

Charles Ramos4's suggestions are great... and last week I really wanted to vote for Fleetwood, but that album just didn't sit right with me, even though everyone knows I love them.

Alright, let's see what kind of suggestions we've got here...
I don't usually do this, but here are my personal top five, including one absolute classic!

Happy birthday to Neil Young!

Look, Steven Newman50, I think you totally misread that one. It’s not actually such a terrible song... I guess.
It’s just about one soft, overly mushy muffin.

Steven Newman50 said:Are you talking about the Young track or that Zappa song? 😁

I was thinking about that Zappa song (and Beefheart's too!). 😛

They've got another series of great desert snapshots...

Scout Niblett - The Calcination of Scoutt Niblett (2010)

image

image

Things were getting heated, but things feel lighter now! 🎉

I love pretty much everything she puts out, but this one? This is the peak. It's raw, it's stripped back—nothing extra, nothing wasted.
She handles the instruments, vocals, lyrics, and basically everything else herself. Oh, and Steve Albini helped out too.

+

The album's cover shows Niblett brandishing a blowtorch as if she's held one all her life. "It was a stunt," she clarifies, laughing. The picture is a comic take on the process of calcination, which is "a technical term for heating," she explains. "The version I am referencing is the first stage in alchemy. There's the actual, physical making of gold, in a chemistry way, and then there's the psychological, which is what I was drawing from, really. It's just about heating something up in order to get rid of what's not needed."

"Welcome to my self-made sweat box. This is where I take it all off. I've got to sweat it out, I'll cook those monsters out -- I'm not coming out of here until my soul appears" is a line that appears in the title track of The Calcination of Scoutt Niblett, and if there is a theme for this album, this is it. The word "calcination" refers to burning metals into calx -- the ashy substance that remains. It’s appropriate here.
