Dennis Martin6 said:Two albums really stood out this time. Terence Trent D'Arby, on the bad side, was easily one of the weakest picks for Album of the Week. Aside from some okay singles, it’s just cookie-cutter pop-soul for the masses. If he were running for Mayor of New York right now, he'd be a populist candidate like a generic politician looking for easy votes. 😁
The bright spot is definitely the Riley/Don Cherry combo, topped off by that killer 12-minute improvisation from Karl Berger. I'm actually in the mood to dig through more Don Cherry stuff now. 👍

I have to agree, that choice caught me off guard... hopefully, Sunday won't be quite like that.

Next time, I'm reaching for another one—specifically that much more important improvisation from Karl Berger...

Dennis Hall41 said:No biggie, but personally I wouldn't put "Album of the Week" in the title. It just feels wrong, you know?

fass, if nothing else, I'm looking forward to your thread opening. Look, you know I can't stand Kozelek (the guy honestly just gets on my nerves), but this album is a masterpiece. It really shouldn't be getting snubbed like this at the last second. It bugs me how some people have been playing tactics lately, waiting until the very end to vote. Why even bother?

I know some people are going to be annoyed by this post, but whatever... honestly, I’m just generally disappointed with albums lately. I don't even know why this hits me so hard. It’s like overnight, the whole concept just lost all meaning to me.
This was a topic I actually cared about, something that made me take music seriously and kept me digging for new stuff.

So what, are we just picking albums for the hell of it now? Can someone please explain why everyone needed this sudden rush and what's actually going on... are you guys really that bored?

Now I think I finally get where analogbear40 and accident were coming from with all those complaints about the topic lately. I guess I’ll have to take a long break from this after seeing a hundred of these...

I basically just came here to vent because I seriously cannot believe RHP didn't make the cut. 😢 🙂

Dennis Hall41, just start the thread anyway...

Crow89, solid review! 👍 I used to be the type to make these kinds of textbook overviews of every single album, or at least the ones that stood out, but then I started getting distracted. I'm still listening to everything, though... it's been a pretty great week overall.

I'm a little bummed that Paul Simon didn't make the cut. It's an amazing album. I definitely spin 'Graceland' way more often, and this one only really made it through my speakers a few times before. But today? I couldn't stop playing it. Thanks, cosmiccobra2. 👍

I gave Jay a shot too, but I honestly couldn't even finish the whole album... sorry, Jessica Morris6. It's decent enough, I guess! 😁

Still waiting on Gerald Jackson48 and Amanda Robinson4 to weigh in and give their verdict. 😛

It feels a bit like autumn...

Jackson C. Frank. 🙏 😍 To me, that's a pretty significant album; he's got a really steady voice.
I’m into Paul Simon too... though I probably need to give this specific album of his more attention.

Cool suggestions overall, though now we just need Dennis Hall41 to throw some Red house Painters into the mix. Just one more bedroom cover, nothing more, nothing less—'down Colorful Hill'. Honestly, I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet! Anyway, we're basically guaranteed a bout of depression this week. 😁

Unless Lemonov blues manages to pull us through. 😬

Palace Music - Lost blues & Other Songs (1997)

He’s honestly one of my favorite characters in music—just another guy who is somehow inseparably dressed... Will Oldham, the songwriter who jumps between so many names, from his most famous alias, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, back to those early Palace Music days... this is one of his earliest albums, but I think it’s actually pretty special compared to his other great stuff.

It’s another record that feels like it’s calling out to the ocean and the coast, though maybe in a different way than Neil Young’s "Zume." Even though Oldham kicks things off with a killer 'Ohio River Boat song Riding', I’d say the standout track is definitely the single West Palm beach Gulf Shores.

Tracklist:

Ohio River Boat song Riding
Riding
Valentine's day Trudy
Trudy Dies
Come In
Little Blue Eyes
Horses
Stable will
Untitled
o How i Enjoy The light
Marriage
West Palm beach
Gulf Shores
(end of ) Travelling Lost blues plus
Lost blues

Also, that guitar solo at the end of 'Horses'? That’s David Behrman from Slint himself.

Not all the tracks are up on YouTube.
Anyway, that's it for now.

What 🧐 🍿

I guess my takeaway here is that there’s a chronic lack of women on this subforum.

Quick update for the week:

I’d like the Alice in Chains album proposer, crow89, to let us know if they actually plan on writing the intro for this thread or not. They haven't said anything, and they haven't responded to our necessary moderator intervention either... if we don't get an answer today, someone else will step up.

In that case, maybe our good friend Jason Mendoza could jump in, since he knows quite a bit about this album? 🙂

Also, I’m asking the veterans—the ones who helped build this thread from the ground up by not just suggesting albums but actually showing up for discussions—to please ignore these kinds of situations. I'm thinking specifically of androlože, for whom breaking the rules like this is totally unacceptable.

I get where they're coming from. Some people have been here a long time, they care about the community, and they play fair... we've dealt with similar issues with certain users a few times before, but I won't name names, you guys know who I mean. But, Puky and I have a different approach; we want everyone to feel welcome here. We don't want to be overly harsh, and we love seeing the community grow with new players. At the same time, new players need to read and respect the rules, and realize that in a small group like this, everything gets noticed. There's no point in trying to pull fast ones on us. If something isn't clear, just ask and we'll answer.

And one more thing, in plain English... 🙂 androlože, I think it's honestly pretty stupid to stop posting on this thread (or starting new ones) just because of another round of these rule-breaking games... so look, just let us look the other way this time. From now on, we might just disqualify both the suggestions and the proposers if we have to.

Fass can take over the thread whenever they're ready. We're counting on them to keep their word, so it'll happen when it happens.

We already have that, right , specifically on the landing pages for the Album of the Week main thread.
🙂

The index thread is basically just an archive—a master list of every album we've suggested so far,
so there's no point in repeating the same info over there too. 😉

One for Labor Day:

oh! sweet nuthin' 😍

Mimma, I was back in America when that whole thing went down in San Francisco... was it almost a decade ago? But as time goes on, I guess I’m just drifting further away from their music, I don't know. Honestly, there was a point where listening to them actually felt difficult—just total emptiness. Especially those favorite albums, Amnesiac and Kid A. Plus, I discovered Talk Talk in the meantime, and that didn't really help either.

Whoa, why so defensive? I’m just saying it felt weird that both dropped in the exact same week. A buddy of mine actually reminded me that we already had a couple of other albums—pretty different ones, granted—come out recently within the same genre. 🙂

Anyway, I’m all for "to each their own," but there's no need to trash someone else's taste. Seems like you're having a bit of a hard time with that concept. 😁

Alright, I mean, you've got a point there. It makes sense. 🙂

I'm honestly not sure if I can stomach that much grunge all in one week. 😁
Maybe I'll try to dive in, though. I just get this feeling that it was all a thing of the past.

Yeah, La Strada is incredible...
I've probably played this album three times already.
