Schizophrenia - General Discussion in Psychology & Therapy ·
Hey, I really need some advice on how to help a close friend... I’m starting to think we're looking at schizophrenia here. He’s constantly dealing with these intense fears and phobias—like he's being watched or controlled by his wife. He’s become super withdrawn too... honestly, his whole life just revolves around meds and pharmacology lately. He doesn't have time for anything else, yet he isn't actually doing anything... just spinning his wheels. His train of thought is totally disconnected, and then there's the drug use, where he has zero grip on reality or his finances. He’s got a wife and daughter, and since serving in the military, things seem to have gone downhill fast... though half his family deals with similar stuff anyway.
His main priority right now is basically just figuring out how to score more drugs. Is there any actual way to help someone like this? He’s been hospitalized more times than I can count. He’s on a cocktail of Moditen, Akineton, and Haldol... he can't even sit still for five minutes without getting restless. Is there any hope left? For us addicts, anyway... because it feels like no junkie ever just has one single mental health issue.☕ ☕ 😲

I honestly think most of my struggles come from dealing with PTSD after the war... seeing people get rich overnight through pure corruption while those who actually earned their stripes get left behind. It’s infuriating. There are so many people out there who are just lost, having no clue where to turn because our bureaucracy is absolutely ruthless... they just bounce you from one office to another with zero empathy, leaving you stuck in limbo. I’m convinced some politicians actually love it this way; they thrive on keeping us divided, pitting neighbors against each other by playing favorites with the system. One person gets everything, the next gets nothing, and before you know it, resentment and bitterness take over. If only we could find a way to actually organize... but not just another formal nonprofit that spends all its time talking to itself instead of making a difference.

Man, I’m dealing with a mountain of issues right now, and it’s just draining the life out of me day after day. Basically, my health has taken a turn for the worse, so I need to go before the medical board to get approval for the meds I’ve been paying way too much for out of pocket. Now they’re telling me they lost my service records... which is my legal right to have, and without them, I can't even get a hearing. God, this administration is a joke. They just bounce you from one office to another and nobody actually does anything. It makes me wonder how I’d ever be honorably
retired otherwise? And it’s just the same old story, over and over... while the scammers have no trouble at all. If you had connections before, you still have them today. It's pathetic... When I headed off to war, I walked away from my junior year of college, and since I was a volunteer, I didn't even realize I was entitled to hazard pay (which the so-called officers used to skim off us) until we saw it in the news and finally asked at a briefing. Since I wasn't in the US Army, I barely knew how to load a rifle, but most importantly, if duty called again, I’d step up as a volunteer in a heartbeat, despite this incompetent
bureaucracy (honestly, maybe that's part of the PTSD too)... I'd fight without hesitation because it's the only thing I know how to do. Fighting comes easier than fighting for my own rights, which feels like they're stripping them away on purpose. Thanks.

You really gotta play nice with the cops... call them "sir" or "officer," you know? Everyone acts all friendly until you step out of line. Then they’ll use tactics on you that you wouldn't even believe in your worst nightmares—honestly, how low can people actually go?... I've been through it all, seen it all... if you haven't, consider yourself lucky. My best advice? Stay as far away from jail as you possibly can.

After years of combat and getting wounded, I finally got diagnosed with PTSD. I was pretty skeptical about the diagnosis at first, honestly... but then it hit me. I’ve been sinking deep into insomnia, drinking way too much, acting out, having nightmares... just lost interest in hanging out with people. Nothing brings me joy anymore, and I'm constantly on edge. What really gets under my skin are those war stories from people who barely saw a day of action or weren't even near the front lines...
Then there's all the manipulation surrounding this diagnosis. Take a single short military operation, for example—something that lasted just a few days, yet somehow produced more PTSD claims than the entire major conflict combined. How does that even work? It’s pretty obvious they're just chasing benefits like pensions or subsidized housing...
It eats at me the most when I run into certain well-known people and I know for a fact they never even stepped foot on a battlefield, yet they managed to dig their way into a pension. God bless our government bureaucracy...

Grab yourself some protein shakes—we’ve got chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, you name it... Just mix it with milk every morning and you're set. If you're interested, shoot me a DM.

Man, look, there isn't a jail tougher than Rikers... it’s basically a holding facility, so they go absolutely overboard with the crackdown. You've even got people in there just for unpaid fines, and they treat them like hardened criminals since the stay is supposed to be short. Anyway, that show about Oz is worth a watch, I guess, but reality hits way differently. Just speaking from my own experience...

I honestly think we’d have a much better discussion if we talked about the conditions in our prison system... they're just way too harsh and overcrowded.

Man, I once got hauled in by the cops just for being around... They called me over and told me I had to head down to the station to sign some paperwork promising I wouldn't show up to a high-risk game. So, we did all that, but then they ran my background check and realized I actually had an outstanding warrant. Apparently, I’d missed a summons for some totally trivial court thing I didn't even remember... such a nothing issue, really. Anyway, long story short, I ended up spending 28 days in jail during the middle of summer because it was August and the judges were all away on vacation. It was enough to drive me insane... ended up landing in a county correctional hospital for a bit.

Man, forget all that talk about ethnic groups. I actually knew a guy who was straight out of a high-security prison in Chicago... everyone would just yell at him through the barred windows during yard time, but honestly, nobody could touch him. He was a total badass, always grinding and training in his cell...

Four people to a cell? Man, back when I was held at Rikers, we’d have six or even seven crammed in there... honestly, the conditions are just brutal while you're under investigation. You're supposed to get an hour of yard time, but what kind of "walk" is that when they strip you down to nothing and take everything else too? I was usually under constant watch anyway, just to make sure I didn't try to hang myself...

Andrew Ramos10 said:Sorry, if I misunderstood... were you actually in an American prison?

Yeah, I was in for some document forgery issues... but back home, it was mostly because of some fights...
Depression... it’s basically what happens when you just stop moving and let life pass you by without doing anything about it.

Yeah, I get it... people naturally gravitate toward each other. It’s just how things work—there's strength in numbers. But honestly, let's talk about these American prisons for a second. You've got career criminals pulling two or three life sentences, yet somehow they end up walking free sooner than our own guys because of all those mass pardons and stuff... you know, those holiday releases and whatnot. I've actually spent some time behind bars, and man, it's interesting... everyone there acts like they're totally innocent. It's this weird "innocence syndrome." I think it's because they're actually ashamed of what they did compared to the actual murderers who basically run the social hierarchy in there. Funny enough, even the toughest convicts absolutely loathe pedophiles and rapists. But if you want to see real hatred? It's directed at the snitches and rats. They're at the bottom of the food chain.
I could probably write a whole memoir about it, but I'll try not to go too far off topic...

Just my two cents here, but I really think you gotta step up and take action. In my book, you need someone who actually knows their stuff—like a psychiatrist or a therapist. It makes sense to start with an initial interview with a div>
George Garcia9, I know how psychiatrists talk... when they say you're being "lazy," what they really mean is that there isn't some magic pill that’s just gonna fix everything for you. Like, there's no such thing. You actually have to put in the work yourself... try to push yourself toward doing what's good for you. And as for therapy drugs? Those are basically just long-term meds that take like 20 to 30 days before you even notice a tiny shift. Plus, half of them have such nasty side effects that sometimes it feels like the damage outweighs the benefits...

Hey, I actually ended up getting tied down in the ER back in Small Town, USA, too... still can't wrap my head around why they did that to me today.
I was literally screaming just trying to get someone to listen—I had to go to the bathroom—and the medics just told me to go pee in a diaper instead. I did it, but man, what a dump that ward was. Just awful. It was straight out of some movie: "Let it hang over the coward's nest."

Hey, regarding Felis 23... You mentioned you’re working in a lab with bacteria, so you have to wash your hands constantly, even though washing wouldn't really help against most of those microbes—or maybe you wouldn't even be here if they got to you. Are you honestly being able to admit to yourself that you actually need some help? You keep pushing it away, but sometimes the truth just hits the hardest...

So, why are we still leaning so hard on lithium for pharmacotherapy? It’s such a classic... Also, schizophrenia usually starts hitting people during those teenage years, right around puberty. Any thoughts on why it kicks off so early? I know there's plenty of medical data backing that up, but I'm curious what you guys think...
