... or perhaps even Iaido or Kenjutsu. 🤔

Edward Sanchez72 said:So, here’s a question... say I have this massive biography of Tokugawa Ieyasu... would it be better to break it down into several parts—sort of like a serialized story—or just dump one giant, overwhelming wall of text all at once? To be clear, this is a dilemma I face with pretty much any long-form piece.

Go with the installments. Think of it as a serialized story. It makes it much more digestible for the reader, and more importantly, if you run out of steam (which, lately, has been happening to me a bit too often 🙂), you always have the option to refresh the blog with a new chapter whenever you're ready...

Heh... well, anyway, 🙂

I plan to cover everything related to ninjas, samurai, and ancient Japanese culture—customs, martial arts, you name it. Truly everything. I’m looking for constructive criticism, suggestions, and any useful links, images, or articles you might want me to translate and feature. Ideally, this could evolve into a solid English-language resource for the basics. I know there are plenty of enthusiasts here, so I really hope this adds some value. It's still in the early stages, so please bear with me 🙂 Thanks!

Bravo... here we go again... 👋 👍

How much can you actually pick up in just a few months when it comes to learning a new skill?

Brandon Hayes73 said:It only took one Muay Thai session for me to realize I'd been sold a bill of goods with karate. It all comes down to intelligence...

I wouldn't call it an intelligence issue so much as finding the right fit. People need to find the discipline that resonates with them. For some, it’s Muay Thai; for others, it’s karate, Tai Chi, ballet, or even chess. Everyone chooses their own path.

The bottom line is simply finding what resonates with you and actually enjoying the process.

If you genuinely enjoy your training, then by all means, keep going. If you don't, you have to ask yourself why you're even bothering. If the only reason you're hitting the mats is because someone convinced you that one style is "superior" to another, then you aren't training for yourself—you're just performing for everyone else.

Why not?

If you’re genuinely undecided on where to start, I’d suggest looking into Karate or Judo as your foundation. It’s worth trying both just to see whether you lean more toward striking or grappling. Once you have a feel for it, you can decide if you're satisfied or if you want to dive deeper into a specific discipline.

Running, cycling, or even digging trenches will get the job done for cardio too... 😁

So, I'm thinking martial arts might be the best move for me. The problem is, there are a thousand different styles out there and I have no idea where to start. ....

Just visit some local clubs, see what they offer, and try a few classes. Eventually, you'll find the one that actually sticks.

I actually enjoy it and hope to tone up a bit (I’m not one of those thin types where an extra few pounds doesn't register). So, what do you suggest? How many times a week should I go, and how long should the sessions last? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

If you aren't in any kind of shape, it might be smarter to focus on dropping some weight and building basic cardio first—maybe through regular light jogging.

If things aren't quite that dire, then by all means, jump into kickboxing. Just make sure you find a decent instructor. As for specific recommendations on coaches or training methods... I suspect there are better experts than me in this group.

In that case, you might as well just head to a disco... you're still moving, jumping, sweating... and there's zero risk of bruising (unless the bouncers are feeling particularly sadistic) 😁

Christian Rodriguez15 said:I get the feeling you'd rather be on some mountain peak, meditating to the sound of the wind while you study.😬

Naturally. The higher you climb, the more there is to learn and practice. Honestly, I’m starting to feel the withdrawal symptoms... I think I’ve reached an advanced stage of Aikidoholizam.😁

Marine Force said:Your best bet is just listening to combat yells, screams of pain, and the sound of blood spraying from arteries or bones snapping during training sessions😁

Exactly. And then you've got the added annoyance of a coach trying to shout over some audio system that’s just there to distract everyone anyway...

If you ask me, music is strictly for demonstrations, not for training sessions... I mean, are you hitting the gym to listen to tunes or to actually master a skill?
