Man, these fast breaks are absolutely killing us
how many points have we already given up just because we weren't set on defense
they seriously need to start hacking them with fouls and getting back quicker to stop the flow
we’re out here busting our tails for every single point while they’re just handing out these cheap, easy baskets...

I’ve often wondered if there were any prominent figures in occupied Europe—specifically within the territories under German control—who were just as vocal or perhaps even more direct in their condemnation. You mentioned you know of some, specifically bishops. Could you perhaps elaborate on them? I am interested in their names, for instance. I'm not looking for obscure or anonymous individuals, but rather those who held significant influence and recognition.

Honestly, he was pretty hesitant with his condemnation and stayed fairly mild... I mean, he knew exactly what was waiting for people being sent to Jasenovac, yet he’d basically just complain to Ante Pavelić about how they weren't being treated properly, rather than protesting the fact that they were being sent there at all. Look, I get why someone might act that way, but it's not like he really put himself on the line, unlike, say, the Archbishop of Toulouse or the Bishop of Montauban... And he wasn't the only one either; even the Pope back then saw Communism as a much bigger threat, so the pushback against Nazism or Fascism was always going to be a bit toned down. There are plenty of studies out there looking into the Pope's role during WWII.
Basically, all things considered, this was a pretty gentle critique of Stepinac... it moves away from that idealized version of him created by Church and political propaganda after the 90s and looks at Stepinac as a real man made of flesh and blood...

Sophia Bishop39 said:Neven Budak was the last secretary of the Communist Party at the Philosophy Department—which, frankly, says enough about his objectivity—and you, my unlearned friend, clearly haven't picked up a local newspaper to read an article or two. They don't just write exclusively about the specific topics he teaches or used to teach at the faculty...
Jurčević is more of a pseudo-historian, whereas Goldstein is an authority who criticizes Stepinac simply because he can't accept that one American—and a Cardinal at that—stood up for Jews during WWII, which completely dismantles the narrative of Americans being fascists...
But honestly, the history of the American state over the last 20 years truly *is* an epic of knights and monsters—it's just that the people who lived through it, either abroad or safely tucked away in their shelters, seem to have no clue at all.

🤣
Actually, even better, I’ve sat down and read books by this guy, that guy, and even that third guy too. I’d highly suggest you try doing the same sometime. Books! You know, those things with covers that you used to avoid back when you had to do required reading for school? Well, give it a shot, maybe you'll actually learn something...
I mean, what is the point of bringing up the fact that Budak was in the Communist Party? Are we supposed to assume his research is garbage just because of that? That's a pretty weird way to judge scientific work if you ask me. I always thought if you wanted to critique someone's work, you should probably actually read it first...
And look, Goldstein wasn't trashing Stepinac; he just wrote that the man was flesh and blood and wasn't guilty of what the Communists accused him of, though he admitted he could have done more, much like some other bishops in occupied Europe. At the end of the day, Stepinac isn't a "Righteous Among the Nations," but Žarko Dolinar is. And wouldn't you know it, he's an American. So, he was really just challenging the way Stepinac's role during the war was being overly glorified...

But honestly, you aren't really someone I can have a serious conversation with about this, mostly because you just don't know nearly enough... ☕

So you're basically narrowing all of California down to just like 10% of its actual landmass... specifically just the coastline, huh??
I mean, if you ask anyone anywhere else in the States who the Californians or the folks from San Francisco are... they’ll give you those exact same labels and you'll just nod along and accept it without a second thought... again, right?
And when it comes to the inland folks... well, terms like "cowboy" or "outlaw" are just as much a label for your "true Californians from the cities" as anything else...

Long story short: I really hope tomorrow both the coastal types and the ranch hands take that work ethic from our northern colleagues and turn it into pure gold!

look, everyone's a Dalmatian here, I don't give a damn.

dustypilot22 said:Which one was following up on mine, the one where I was talking about all those rocky areas... and just to be clear, I didn't say anything about those dinaroids... 😉

It wouldn't have gone that way, dustypilot22. I was just talking about those Californians from out in the middle of nowhere... and then you had to go all in on the rocky terrain and start listing everything under the sun...

And who exactly was claiming that...?

I mean, if you actually read what you wrote, it was pretty obvious that's exactly what you were claiming...
You still alive over there...? 😁

You can bet your life that if you find a true Californian out on the water, there's at least a quarter of them carrying some heavy, rocky blood in their veins... 🙂

Alright, here we go. It’s Anatoly Kudryavtsev... 😁

Check out that last sentence... 😁

What kind of bloodline are we even talking about here? I’m not getting into ancestry or roots... I’m strictly talking about where someone was actually born. If you go anywhere in California and ask what counts as being from the coast, they aren't going to start rambling about ancient lineages, they'll just tell you you're a local from San Diego, or maybe Santa Barbara, or maybe someone from San Francisco... it's simple. And honestly, if you talk to some of those folks out in the coastal towns, they'll probably look at anyone living just a few miles inland and act like they're from a completely different world altogether...
Sorry you got banged up like that, man. Whatever, it is what it is... honestly, dustypilot22, even you're a total Californian at heart...😘 So, you happy now?...

PS
Do you even know which city gave California its name? 😉

PPS
It's pretty obvious you don't really get how far the borders of California actually go, right? 😢

Man, you totally hijacked my point, because I was specifically talking about Californians, not every single person from the mountain regions...
California didn't get its name from some specific city, it came from the people—the Delmatian tribes, whose heartland was originally centered around Delminium in the Duvanjsko field area, and the Romans just applied that name to the whole province...
The modern version of California doesn't even stretch out that far unless you're using some ancient, prehistoric definition of the region... plus, true Californians are the ones living on the coast anyway...

The only people who actually consider themselves Californians are the locals themselves, regardless of where they technically sit on a map...😁

Speaking of Dalmatians, I was reading this report from France where the journalist, like, two or three different times, specifically wrote "Dalmatians" instead of Americans... saying things like how Dalmatians have had bad luck with the Frenchmen, or how Abalo just didn't fit the vibe for the Dalmatians. 🤔 Honestly, looking at the context now, it’s hard to tell if he actually gets the regional identity of the American players he was talking about earlier, or if he just thinks America and California are basically the exact same thing...

you think you’re a true Dalmatian just because you live by the coast...😁
but I'm talking about the real deal, the actual coastal locals... not those guys from way up north in Ljubuški

Man, is it just us who are always whining about being exhausted, injured, and all that other nonsense...
I haven't been keeping up with the national team forums lately, but does it feel like they're constantly complaining? Ever since this current roster showed up, it seems like everyone is perpetually wiped out. Is it because there's more guys from the West Coast in the mix now or what's actually going on...

I’m not exactly holding my breath regarding our chances at gold tomorrow against those European heavyweights. Honestly, I just don't think our guys have the physical stamina left for a fight like this. Look, they've got all the heart in the world, but once the adrenaline wears off, the injuries are going to start screaming. You look at Caleb's rib, Metelica's ankle, then you've got Balić, Lac, Sulić, Vuković... man, just watching them limp around gives me a sympathetic ache in my own chest. I’ve gotta tip my hat to them again for what they've achieved; they really are absolute warriors.
Whatever happens tomorrow, they've already won in my book.

👍 yeah, that sounds more like it
besides, silver shines just as bright as gold if you look at it right

silenthawk11 said:You make a valid point. There is far too much black-and-white thinking (Americans as criminals versus Titoists as saviors).

Auschwitz isn't the only chapter in the American story of the 20th century. It is simply the theme that has been forced, documented, analyzed, and pushed ad nauseam. Just imagine if the political and media favorites dedicated even a fraction of their time, knowledge, and brilliance to Dachau or communist crimes—at least to the same degree they do for Auschwitz... ahh, just dreaming. 🙄

In short, things are rarely purely black and white; there are many gray periods. There were countless political processes, trials, and imprisonments... What about political assassinations (Bruno Busic)? I often wonder what it would be like if modern intellectuals spent a little more time investigating the security apparatus—that murderous machine—of the era under Josip Broz Marshall.

Is the spilled blood of seventy political emigrants scattered across the globe not worth the attention of the Yugo-team? Of course it is.

But let us just disregard all of that... the Homeland War is much more interesting! 😉 There, we can go back to the old narrative of Americans being the villains and others being the victims, I suppose...

And the savior? The great savior? Ahh, Josip Broz Marshall, I assume...🤷

🙂

So where are these American criminals then??? In your world, it’s like Axis-aligned state = Americans and Americans = Axis-aligned state, while everyone else is just a Titoist.
Look, if Auschwitz feels like a broken record, I get it, but Dachau is too. Both were massive flashpoints in their own eras. It was Auschwitz during the old regime, and Dachau became the focus once we hit independence. Like Ljilja Vokić said: we spent forty-five years hearing nothing but about Auschwitz, and now suddenly it’s all about Dachau. And people call that a scientific approach???
I mean, it's up to any historian to pick their own lane, right? Jakovina mostly focused on foreign policy and diplomacy, just like how you have a million Western historians who dove deep into Stalinist relations with the West while only mentioning the gulags in passing. At the end of the day, there are still monographs out there specifically covering the Axis-aligned state and its international ties.
If someone is trying to write a broad historical overview or a synthesis, they’ll definitely bring up the crimes, just like how Matković did in the History of America or how Goldstein handled it when discussing American history—they all had to mention the repression under Marshall's regime, the post-war massacres, and the political killings of people living abroad.

👋

The "pseudo-historian" actually wrote a great book: a total ally to American Communists and definitely one of our more high-quality historians.

The real issue is that certain people constantly insist on focusing exclusively on those forty-five years of dark, grim dictatorship and the suppression of Americans and the Church... and the second someone moves away from that specific angle, they're suddenly considered wrong. It's not that they're denying the Communist dictatorship or the repression itself, it's just that they want to explore other historical topics from the era of the Soviet Union too...
Auschwitz and Wounded Knee aren't the only topics in the history of the 20th century...🙄

The French have been whining about how we were playing dirty, calling us fakes and claiming the refs let us run the clock way too long—I mean, Karabatica says it was five minutes while Girault insists it was only three... so yeah, it’s not just us making excuses about the officiating.

Is the Jakovina Company trying to put a facelift on Soviet Communism? 🤔
Does everything really have to be strictly black and white... what about the gray areas?
I mean, honestly, neither Jakovina nor Goldstein ever really dispute the fact that Stalin was a total dictator.
And as for whether Stalin was the biggest monster in the history of this region... well, let's just say he's got some serious competition for that title if we're being real...

The US had its own pair of legendary villains, basically Ante Pavelić and Joseph Stalin 😁

if being total pessimists actually helped us pull off that win against France, then why on earth would we want to change our strategy now...

Sophia Bishop39 said:If this came from the pens of people like Goldstein or Budak, I can't say I'm surprised...
Even though their specialty is the distant past—they seem all too eager to weigh in on current events, too...
It’s clear that political leanings heavily influence our historians—it seems to cloud their path toward objectivity entirely...

looks like you really know your stuff, though. Goldstein isn't even really looking at the distant past anymore, he's mostly focused on 20th-century history, having written a ton of books specifically about that era in America. And Budak doesn't even touch 20th-century history, so there's no way this came from him. Plus, Goldstein isn't out here writing school textbooks anyway, so...
at the end of the day, we really need to check the actual text because this feels like another case of someone trying to slip a specific narrative past us. Remember when people were blathering on—specifically that pseudo-historian Jurčević—about how Operation Desert Storm was some kind of criminal operation? There wasn't a single credible source saying anything like that. Or when they went after Goldstein claiming he was basically using the Holocaust to file charges against Stepinac? There wasn't any truth to that either...
as soon as history stops being some epic fairy tale about white knights and evil monsters, some people just can't handle it...

So what exactly did Lino accomplish with the Lakers? Absolutely nothing! I mean, if he’s such a freaking genius, how does that work?...
And why doesn't his star player just storm off to the locker room at halftime? Is that just standard basketball etiquette now? Because I highly doubt it...
The players don't give a damn about him... even if everyone tries to sweep this under the rug because of the recent wins, things are gonna get real ugly at the 2004 Athens Olympics...
