Unrealistic movie tropes and plot holes in Movies ·
goldenhound32 said:The error lies in the timing. Suppose you’re chasing someone armed with a shotgun, sprinting after them. They hit a dead end, which means they have to face you. It would be far better for you if you had already cycled the slide; otherwise, you might not get the shot off in time. In those moments, seconds are the difference between life and death—just ask Janica Kostelic.🙂

If you’re lugging a damn shotgun while chasing someone and you corner them in an alley, isn't the unarmed guy running for his life actually more dangerous than you? You can just reload in a second and blast him ten times before he even reaches you... 🙂

Great, suddenly I have the urge to be an unarmed fugitive (😎)

Especially if you're some kind of badass motherfucker (:Clint🙂 style. Wouldn't it be way cooler to unload that shotgun with your right hand while holding a kid you just caught falling from the 7th floor in your left? Just drop a tough line in his face and splatter his brains all over the wet pavement... 😎

It’s not that I’m outraged, but if you're asking if I enjoy it, the answer is a resounding no.

Furthermore...

A character walks up to someone's house, rings the doorbell, and within five seconds, the person is opening the door as if they were standing right at the entrance waiting for them. It's very similar to that instant phone response issue someone else mentioned earlier.

I used to get hung up on those mistakes too. Eventually, I realized I was watching movies way too shallowly back then because I was constantly "hunting" for errors instead of actually following the plot or the point. A massive error for me is a script hole—like when a character suddenly knows something they shouldn't. Everything I just listed is just minor stuff...

furthermore...

A guy shows up at someone's house, rings the bell, and the door opens in five seconds flat, like he was standing right there. It's basically that instant phone answer thing someone already mentioned.

You know how movies can just skip over the boring parts, like a character waiting around after making a phone call?
🙂
Did you notice how Fox Mulder and Dana Scully sometimes zip through a couple of cities in just 42 or 43 minutes before they crack a case?

but seriously... if there’s nothing in the chamber before he practices, and then he goes through the motions and shoots whatever happens to be in his way, where's the mistake?

It really depends on what kind of movies we're talking about. Personally, those logic gaps haven't bothered me much because I've noticed they mostly happen in the same types of flicks—the ones made purely for entertainment. Honestly, most of these "mistakes" just make me laugh rather than making me cringe... like, how could it possibly be any more realistic?

Here are a few I’ll never forget (not doing a Top 5 or anything like that, just some genius musical moments that are among my favorites, but I don't have the heart to rank them):

[No need for spoiler tags. If you haven't seen the movie, there's no point in watching the scene]

Requiem for a Dream (02:28 - 04:50) - the dramatic score fits the impressive camerawork perfectly, providing an amazing backdrop for this incredibly depressing and emotional scene

Star Wars - one of the most touching cinematic moments for me

Three Colors: Blue - it would be pretty mindless to suggest this isn't a masterpiece

Eyes Wide Shut - honestly, I think it's redundant to even mention which scene it is

Thesis (- 5:35) - this whole chase scene is pure genius. easily one of the tensest things I've ever seen

Fanny and Alexander (- 03:18) - such a beautiful opening. I'd definitely rewind to the start a few times. those gorgeous interiors paired with warm colors, Alexander, and the score... it's the perfect way to open a film

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind - just enjoy this brilliant collaboration between Studio Ghibli and Joe Hisaishi

just a few that came to mind...

Yeah, right. They’ll probably just wing the translation... whatever they think sounds good 🙂

you didn't really need a poll for this, plus there's already a thread about ridiculous, useless translations 😁

anyway, obviously not, and there's actually a fix for stuff like this. we have to remember that 101 Dalmatians is a kids' movie after all, so maybe it’d be smart to give children a hint about what her name means. obviously, I don't mean constantly using the translated name whenever the character is mentioned, but when she's introduced for the first time, you could just put the meaning in parentheses. I have this fuzzy memory of people used to do something like that back in the day, though I can't recall if it applied specifically to character names 🙂

Not sure which option to pick. I report posts every now and then, but I haven't really had a reason to report a signature yet—though that might change... and if I do report a signature, it definitely won't be because it's three lines long or whatever 🙂

The downside of being a total cinephile in Movies ·
I used to let everyone else’s takes on a movie—the praise or the bashing—totally ruin the experience for me. I’d take it way too personally. It took me a while to realize it wasn't actually about the film or the reviews, but about my own tendency to take things to heart. Now, if a comment is actually smart, whether they loved it or hated it, I find it useful. But when the lights go down, I watch with my own eyes and stick to my own vibe. I haven't been burned by overhyped "masterpieces" in ages because I stopped letting people set my expectations through the roof. Same goes for those "underrated" gems... I don't let anyone tell me what to feel anymore. It sounds cliché to say "a movie is just what it is," but it's true. Outside noise can't change the actual film; it just messes with how you perceive it... 🙂

Just don't go in expecting high octane action. It’s got that classic vibe where the stillness is what really sticks with you. Don't look for any big dramatic tension; just chill out and let it happen... nothing crazy, just life unfolding.🙂

Kate Torres said:Did you catch how he films using a static camera positioned just above ground level? I noticed that technique in the Wim Wenders documentary Citizen Kane, which serves as a tribute to Ozu. I watched that about two years ago, but I still haven't gotten around to watching Citizen Kane 😢. Apparently, Wim Wenders considers Ozu his mentor.

Yeah, I noticed the low camera angle. I actually read an Ebert-esque review about it, and here’s the deal: Ozu wasn't just following a strict rulebook for the sake of it (though the camera does stay at a specific height most of the time). It was more about avoiding heavy cuts so you could actually feel the connection between the characters in the frame. It feels organic, not forced by the camera work...

Never heard about Wenders being such an Ozu fan... 😁
