Religion classes in school - Megathread in Students & Teens ·
It was only September, just as the school year was finally getting underway, when we suddenly received this official notice asking us to declare whether our child would be attending religious education classes... which is quite a surprise, really, considering there wasn't a single word mentioned about it during the initial enrollment process.

It occurs to me that the separation of church and state isn't just undermined by religious instruction itself, but rather by all this accompanying ritualistic fluff... Take the first day of school, or those bread blessing ceremonies—you have a priest walking right into the building to bless the staff, the students, and by extension, my child. If there is a need for such things, why on earth can't it be scheduled for a Saturday or a Sunday, allowing anyone who actually wishes to participate to attend?

Personally, I wouldn't mind a dedicated course on religious studies at all; in fact, I think making it a mandatory subject would be perfectly fine. We could simply allocate the hours based on the actual demographics of the country to reflect our diverse reality. For instance, if we allocated six hours to Buddhism, forty-two to Islam, and perhaps a hundred and twelve to Christianity, it would feel much more balanced. I’m just throwing numbers out there, of course...

But the crucial point is the methodology: it should be taught through an academic lens, much like how we studied ethics back in middle school, where we learned "Buddhists believe X" or "Catholics believe Y," rather than presenting specific doctrines as absolute, indisputable facts.

Instead, everything is presented as if it were an objective truth, which is where the problem lies. To me, that approach would be entirely acceptable; let the children learn about various customs and belief systems, especially since the majority of people in the US celebrate these traditions anyway, so they might as well understand the "why" behind them. Besides, I already discuss these topics with my son at home whenever he shows interest, as it is something people talk about constantly and is always being depicted in movies and media...

Even our teacher made it crystal clear from day one that she wasn't being compensated for that extra supervision period... she told us that if he stayed in the classroom, she’d watch over him, though she might have to step out occasionally to attend to her own professional duties. So, essentially, I spent the entire first semester personally picking him up, driving him home, and then bringing him right back again... twice a week, no less.

Ten years...

As for this whole back-and-forth messaging thing, I’m still a bit fuzzy on the details. Are the kids actually in a classroom during religion class? Last year, they ended up shuffling them into a different room because the dedicated religious education space was booked for something else—I have no idea what they were hosting in there besides the usual lessons, but it meant our kids, who normally just stay put in their own classroom during that period, were stuck in limbo. Every other week they’d get sent to the library, though if school started early, the library would be locked tight...

But my boy? He just spent the time working on homework or sketching out comic strips, telling me it didn't bother him one bit; he wasn't really listening anyway, and frankly, he doesn't listen during science class if the topic doesn't grab his interest.😁 I decided not to push for a "solution" to the scheduling mess, because from my experience, a solution in this district usually involves them sitting on some cold concrete steps in the hallway while I hover over them like a first-grade janitor...

We seem to have lucked out with the schedule this year; one day they finish after the last period, and another day they’re out after the third, but since they head to the religion classroom, the ones not participating just hang out in their regular room.

So, my son had this encounter with one of those absolute gems in his class—she actually told him he didn't deserve good grades just because he doesn't believe in God... He shot back that she probably shouldn't be worrying about his grades when her own aren't exactly stellar, and suggested that if she truly believes in God, she might want to watch her mouth before He takes offense at such nonsense...

She burst into tears, of course, which made him feel terrible for a moment... but ever since that little exchange, she’s been the only kid in the entire grade who won't even look his way...
I find myself reminiscing about my very first pregnancy, back when I was just twenty-three years old and possessed absolutely no idea what I was doing... I remember practically fleeing from online forums and every single horror story I stumbled upon because the sheer weight of it all began to trigger this overwhelming sense of panic in me. Reading about everyone else's struggles felt so heavy, so suffocating... But now, during this pregnancy, none of that seems to bother me at all. I suppose I’ve simply grown much more confident in myself and in my own body, and I no longer fall into the trap of thinking that every negative experience someone else describes is destined to happen to me specifically. That said, I really would suggest to anyone who finds themselves spiraling after reading these things that they just step away from the screen... I mean, honestly, why subject yourselves to that kind of stress?
This applies to all pensions, not just those from Germany; my father-in-law actually ran into this exact same situation with his pension from Canada... He only received the notification yesterday, so he’s still trying to wrap his head around what needs to be done, and since he’s considered 100% disabled, it would be absolutely wonderful if he didn't have to spend half his day trekking over to the IRS office.

Our teacher insists it isn't even her responsibility to supervise the kids during that specific period... and then there’s the issue of the two hours dedicated to religious studies, where one of them has parent-teacher conferences scheduled, so she can barely keep an eye on anyone. It’s been this way since first grade. To make matters worse, our school library is only open three mornings a week and two afternoons, so when they have afternoon classes, the library is completely closed during the religion block.

Back in first grade, I used to come pick him up myself and just take him home during that hour, though eventually, he started staying behind. On the days when there aren't any meetings, they just stay in their classroom, but on the days when parents are coming in, the teacher is busy and they end up just loitering in the hallway. Honestly, I almost prefer them out in the hall because at least the janitor can see them and prevent any mischief... whereas when they are tucked away behind closed doors, who knows what kind of nonsense might cross their minds... The only thing that keeps me sane is that they are relatively well-behaved—mostly just drawing or playing board games, and thank goodness there hasn't been an incident yet. We managed to limp through until third grade, so I suppose we'll survive the rest of them...

The most absurd part of all this is knowing there are several other grades where the religious studies class is always either the very first or the very last period, and every single child attends... In first grade, I complained and I tried everything, but I was really just tearing my hair out over nothing. He doesn't even mind the break, so I've finally just accepted that this is simply how things are and left it at that.

I noticed you included an account number in the payment request, and since the recipient is listed as JP Morgan Chase, I’m assuming it’s yours... however, this specific account seems to be tied to Wells Fargo. You really ought to double-check whether that is actually your own routing info, just to make sure you didn't accidentally plug in the main corporate details from Wells Fargo instead.

Forget about the technicalities for a moment; our boys simply lack the grit required for this level... You just can't show up to a semifinal playing like that...
Wage garnishments and collections in Law ·
I’m sure there’s already an answer floating around somewhere on one of these forums, but I simply cannot be bothered to go hunting for it myself...

On June 15th, I received a notice regarding a writ of execution, and quite predictably, the debt along with the legal fees from the law firm was settled in full the very next day. However, just two days ago, my bank account was frozen due to that exact same garnishment order.

What is my next course of action in this predicament? Should I merely take proof of payment down to Chase and hope for the best, or is there some other bureaucratic hoop I am required to jump through?...
Issues with Chase online banking in Banking, Insurance & Loans ·
First, you’ll need to navigate over to your payments section, head into the payees menu, and go ahead and set up a new recipient... Once you're there, just select your bank—say, Chase or Wells Fargo—and input the account number, and voilà, your payee is officially added to the system.
From there, you simply move on to the actual payment order, where you'll select which specific checking or savings account you want to draw the funds from, depending on which one you're using for this transaction.
Next, you'll select that specific payee you just created earlier...
As for the authorization code,😛 you can usually find that right on your billing statement, though if you're just sending money to someone personally, you might find it helpful to just enter "99" in the first field...
The total amount should be fairly self-explanatory, much like the payment description, which you can pull directly from your invoice or simply label as a general transfer.

I do hope this provides some clarity...

Well, I finally sat down and watched it... I couldn't make it to the theater in time, so I just waited until the DVD arrived in the mail. It was fine. And honestly, I have no idea why everyone is making such a massive fuss about it being inappropriate for school kids... my six-year-old son watched it and actually enjoyed himself quite a bit. Apparently, there are some "terrifying" scenes in there, but if you ask me, Ben 10 is way more intense than this...

Mistaken wire transfer/payment error in Banking, Insurance & Loans ·
She wired him three thousand dollars, but before he could even blink, fifteen hundred of it was snatched away by a bank levy... so much for a smooth transaction. He’s trying to pay her back now, but since half that money vanished into thin air to cover his debts, he’s left staring at a balance of only fifteen hundred... and because those other funds are sitting in some frozen account elsewhere, he simply can't send over the full amount he intended to return...

If my understanding of this mess isn't entirely flawed 😍
Starting an LLC: Where to begin? in Business, Accounting & Taxes ·
I’ve recently launched a small IT services and computer repair outfit, which has been operating quite modestly out of my own apartment thus far... though, given how quickly things have picked up, we’ve reached a point where we desperately need a dedicated commercial space to call home. We've actually identified a potential location, but we’re currently stuck in the bureaucratic limbo of waiting for all the building permits and zoning clearances to clear, which, as anyone who has dealt with local government knows, can be an agonizingly slow process...

I was wondering if anyone here might have some insight into whether it’s legally permissible to begin operations in a new space before those final permits are officially in hand, especially considering that our specific line of business doesn't strictly require a specialized occupancy permit under current regulations...
The bank is taking my entire paycheck... in Banking, Insurance & Loans ·
So, my buddies over in San Diego actually managed to negotiate their rent down by a whopping 80 bucks... They basically sat the landlord down and laid it all out, telling him straight up that they simply couldn't swing the current rate and were prepared to pack up and move out... And honestly, the guy was surprisingly reasonable about it; he looked them right in the eye and said, "Look, given the market, I'm not about to risk losing good tenants, so just tell me what you can actually afford"... and he dropped the price right then and there to match it.

It’s funny how things work out, because we’re actually looking to move ourselves very soon for that exact same reason... Our landlady is being completely inflexible about lowering our monthly payment, even though we know for a fact we could find a comparable place in this city for at least 50 to 80 dollars less than what we're paying now...

So really, I don't see why we should lose any sleep over whether that clerk ends up losing half her paycheck—or perhaps even more—and how she’ll manage to cover her own basic expenses... 👎

It’s hardly surprising that our society has reached this particular state of decay when you consider the complete lack of moral compass displayed by so many people these days...
