Which PSU should I buy? in Desktops ·
goldencyclist22 said:I already bought it. I figured the PSU would be fine, but it's just not cutting it...
it’s not an actual gaming rig—maybe some light 3D stuff, but that's not even the main goal.

It’s just a standard home PC, and it has to stay quiet. That's the dealbreaker right there.

I know that Seasonic 520W and the EVGA 550 W are pretty quiet... haven't had a chance to run the other two yet.

Did you already pull the trigger on all of this, or...?
What are you actually planning to do with this rig?
You aren't going to be doing much heavy lifting with that GPU...

brightviper13 said:Look, what he said is fine, and that card is decent enough. But I wanted to be certain before I slapped a GPU in there like the one you used. He mentioned a budget of 400 for $167, but didn't say anything about the power supply. That card really needs a 400W unit, and I don't mean some cheap junk from a bargain bin. If we use a garbage PSU, we’re asking for trouble later. Even if it looks like it doesn't pull much, I don't want to end up with 🤷 when my PC dies on me.

this card isn't exactly a power hog🙂

brightviper13 said:Just list the exact motherboard, how much RAM you're running, which specific Athlon dual-core it is, and what kind of power supply you've got. Also, is that PSU capped at 400$167? We need to see if the rest of your rig can actually handle modern games.

He already covered all the essentials.
Based on the Best Buy link, it's something like this $167 🙂

0 points, that card is dying...
What else is in your rig and what kind of PSU are you running?

Thomas Wells5 said:How long does it usually take for admin.com or online stores to ship an item to my house via mail?

A day or two.

If you order and pay by, say, 3 PM on Monday, you can pretty much expect it at your door by Tuesday.

My EVGA 400 W wasn't some bottom-shelf budget unit when I picked it up.

Joshua Garcia3 said:He isn't looking for this to play games; he needs it for work. The real question is whether his current setup can handle a new card, especially if he's still running that cheap, generic 400W power supply. I'd suggest picking up a decent 500W unit that won't break the bank.

Edit: Isn't it generally assumed that Nvidia is for gaming and AMD is for multimedia?

Power supply and GPU:

Actually, it's the other way around when it comes to cards. 🙂Nvidia is more focused on multimedia because of those CUDA cores.
1 x OCZ 500W CoreXSTream 2 Power Supply, Active PFC OCZ-CXS500W-US
1 x MSI GTX 550 1GB GDDR5 192bit, N550GTX-Ti-M2D1GD5 1GD5/OC, DVI x2

$437

Going with an MSI card specifically for that 3-year warranty.🙂

vividpilot47 said:Hey, I need a quick reality check here. I swapped out my old Radeon HD 4870 GDDR5 card (the one with DVI+DVI+TV) for a Sapphire Radeon HD 6670 1GB GDDR5. Total newbie question: is this actually an upgrade? To me, the colors look off, but maybe that's just in my head since I don't know what I'm doing. Any insights would be appreciated...

thnx

Someone seriously played you.

Joshua Ramos14 said:My bad, I was being an idiot. Sorry. 🙂

Anyway, I'm hitting up Best Buy tomorrow to grab this XFX. It’ll definitely be quieter than my current setup. My present one drives me insane—it's like the second I launch any app, the PC just starts screaming at me. Totally unnatural. 🙂

Thanks everyone. Sorry if I was being a pain. Heading out for this 🙂

Don't hold your breath. I put a beefier 550W unit in a buddy's rig for his SLI setup and you can barely hear it running.

That's the price for the whole rig, not just the GPU 🙂

Joshua Ramos14 said:Alright, thanks... I'll probably just grab an XFX tomorrow 🙂 since I need enough juice for a Radeon HD 4850 1GB GDDR5... heard they're power hungry. I'll drop a link later when I'm off my Samsung Galaxy S and at a desk... but from what I see, XFX is top-tier, so I'm going with them.

Sent by powaaaaah of Samsung Galaxy S!

XFX uses the same design philosophy as Seasonic, and Seasonic is gold standard.🙂
Overclocking (Main Thread) in Desktops ·
It all comes down to the motherboard, and honestly, yours wasn't even built for overclocking in the first place. 😁
Overclocking (Main Thread) in Desktops ·
You can overclock, I just don't know by how much ^^ or what the phase count is on that board—you really want at least an 8+2 setup if you're looking for stability 🙂
I'll dig up those specs for you 🙂 and the PSU is plenty 🙂
also, that cooler is going to be your bottleneck. It isn't a bucket, but it's definitely not top-tier either 😁

ruggedraven10 said:Didn't want to start a whole new thread since you guys already kicked off the overclocking talk.

I'm running an i5-2500K with an Arctic Cooling Freezer 13
inside a Cooler Master Case,
with two 80mm intake fans in the front and one 120mm exhaust in the back.

I'm not looking to overclock right now, but who knows what I'll feel like doing down the road. Basically, I want to know how good this cooler actually is and if it can handle some serious tuning later.
Also, what kind of ceiling am I looking at with this specific setup?

You should've mentioned your PSU and motherboard too.😬
