GPU Buying Guide - (Read first post) in Desktops ·
Andrew Fox74 said:I've been running an HD 6850 for a year now and haven't run into a single driver issue. No stuttering, no screen tearing, nothing. I just stick to the same drivers that were current when I first bought the card.
What exactly is the deal with those AMD drivers? What problems are we even talking about?🤷

I was dealing with image tearing, freezing, Blue Screens, and all kinds of other garbage—and that was even with a brand new graphics card, just so we're clear.
Brian Campbell36 said:I get it, but he's asking for... $267 Whether it’s a good deal or not, I don't know if dumping cash into that card is actually smart. Am I even going to see a real jump in FPS?

Selling my GPU. $283 Can I get this much, plus some extra cash for an XFX AMD RADEON hd 7850 Black edition with 2GB DDR5, DualDVI, HDMI, and 2x miniDP?

I might just pull the trigger on this. Is it actually worth the cash, or am I better off looking for something else in this price range?

$283 Forget about getting that money. There's no way you're pulling that off. That card is priced like it's brand new, and nobody's paying retail prices for used gear. Good luck if you actually think you'll find a buyer. $200

Alexander Moore67 said:There's an old saying that the wise man yields. Since I'm 51 now, I guess I’m done trying to win every argument. NVIDIA has killer marketing, but at its current price point, the 7870 absolutely crushes the GTX 660, especially with Catalyst 12.11.
Check out this review over at TechPowerUp. It breaks down how that card actually holds up under pressure.

And who was even talking about overclocking the GPU?

Not everyone buys a GPU just to overclock it. Some people just want a card that actually works—something that provides a smooth gaming experience and stays stable, both in terms of the hardware and the drivers.

Nvidia fans are just talking nonsense if you ask me. I’ve cycled through five or six Nvidia cards over the years and never dealt with a single driver headache. With AMD, sure, the performance might be better, but those drivers absolutely sucked the life out of me. 😳

Andrew Miller102 said:I wasn't talking about the EVGA one, I was talking about that other one. EVGA 500 W I don't have enough to go on here. Give me something actual to work with. $90 Think whatever you want about this.🙂I’d honestly rather just grab that Corsair from the other link. The 380W rating is a bit weak, but what's the point in risking it? If I mess this up, I'll just end up banging my head against a wall anyway.😂

I can't really do much with just a link to a product page. If you want my take on it, you're going to have to actually say something first. Give me some context or ask a real question.

It's the same deal with EVGA power supplies. Honestly, anything below this specific model isn't even worth mentioning, let alone buying—unless you're in a total bind and absolutely broke.Looking for a solid power supply from a reputable brand if possible. The most important part of a computer? It depends on what you're looking at. No point even bringing it up. I don't know how many times I've had to say it when half these people just ignore it on purpose anyway. The golden rule..☕

Are you kidding me? 😁

All you really need is a killer GPU for a couple bucks. As long as you've got a decent enough power supply, you're set. 🤣🤣🤣

Gerald Flores63 said:Right now, I’ve got $1900 sitting right next to me in my room, so I could blow cash on it or just get a new card if I felt like it. My current rig has a Radeon HD 4770 with 4GB of RAM and an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450, and honestly, Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 vs Far Cry 3 runs on Ultra settings without breaking a sweat.
So why would I need a $400 card? Even if it were $1900, losing that much wouldn't hurt my wallet—maybe just a couple days of regret. It plays the exact same game as my Radeon HD 4770. If I'm actually going to buy something, I'll grab a budget card under a hundred bucks that's at least 2X better than what I have. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Smart thinking.
If you're happy with it, why waste money? 🙂

Brian Campbell36 said:Just grab an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 and you'll be fine.

What kind of idiot are you thinking?
We're talking about a budget card around $300 not something twice the price. :/
Not everyone has money to burn on a GPU.

It’s doable, but you're cutting it close. Personally, I wouldn't push past something like an HD 7770 or an Nvidia 650 ti,
maybe even an HD 7850 since it doesn't pull much juice,
but like graniteharbor85 said, most of this comes down to the rest of your build.

It works great, barely makes a sound, and it was cheap enough.

but it doesn't cost 150-$67 😁 it costs almost double.😲

They aren't "better," they're actually worse. There's no way they've improved.☕

I picked mine up at Best Buy $104 paid 😬

I've got one of those Fortron 400W units too 😁

Honestly, I’m pretty happy with how it performs 😍

What about the power supply?

ironhawk3 said:I'm with you on asking for more $833 (definitely need max Video RAM for my heavy textures and Autodesk Maya workloads), but let's be real—the current options are trash. We need to talk about bit depth and why the whole Intel vs Nvidia debate matters here.

Thanks

what else is left in this thread???

a) if your power supply is total junk, there's no way you're running a $833 card with that
b) honestly, no GPU at that price point is worth it because your processor is just going to bottleneck 🙂

Don't mix up DDR3 and DDR2 because it won't work—you gotta pick one or the other.

DDR3 is actually cheaper right now.
Two 4GB sticks will run you about $90

Jeffrey Richardson4 said:Hey everyone,

I'm looking for some input on these 7850 cards:

AMD Radeon HD7850 1GB vs. MSI Radeon HD7850 OC 1GB

Core speed isn't my main concern—that's an easy fix with a few clicks. I care more about build quality, how quiet the fans are, and the overclocking headroom.

Also, if anyone has experience with these motherboards, which one is better:

Asus P8B75-M LX or MSI B75MA-P45

Build quality matters here too. I'm not planning on heavy overclocking, but I noticed MSI offers a 3-year warranty on their stuff. Does that actually mean they're built better?

Go with the one that has the longer warranty. In this case, that's the MSI with the 3 years.😁

If you're playing at 1080P

Comes with a 3-year warranty

If you want the 2GB version, go with this

Or maybe this one (3-year warranty plus some beastly cooling🙂)

None of this matters if the rest of your rig can't actually keep up with the GPU.

But even this 9800 isn't that weak at HD resolution.
The guy doesn't seem to get why, because if you actually look at the pixel rate, texel rate, and memory bandwidth.
One glance at the cuda cores (listed there as Unified Shaders) and the bus width shows the difference clearly.
Plus, I see this 5670 isn't much behind the 9800 in terms of FPS, despite people acting like they're junk when they see them.

Neither of these cards can handle Full HD on high settings. Maybe low, maybe medium if you're lucky, but high? No chance. These are several generations old; nobody serious compares them to today's standards.

The card is nearly five years old. It's just stupid to compare it to what's on the market right now.
