China's economy: What's the move? in Formula 1 ·
placidsurfer9 said:Man, you’re totally rewriting the rules on how to save tires... I guess from now on, only the softies are gonna be winning in Formula 1!!! Give me a break. 🙂

If that's the case, then why isn't Massa sitting higher up in the standings? 😁

that’s honestly why I don't even bother with preseason stuff. maybe I'll glance at something small if I'm bored, but nothing much more than that. 😉

Joshua Newman2 said:The whole race felt like a total reality check after getting all hyped up for the season opener.

Fernando Alonso really showed everyone why he’s a two-time champ. 🙏
Sebastian Vettel looked like he was already bracing himself for another season plagued by mechanical failures.

Also, regarding that whole Massa-Alonso thing—my bet is their little friendship lasts only as long as Alonso stays consistently better than him, or at most until the summer break. 🤷

The only real shocker was how that internal battle at Mercedes-Benz played out. I honestly can't tell if Michael Schumacher just isn't quite there yet, or if he's actually playing nice just to make the championship more interesting for the fans. 😁

Man, Alonso totally blew me away too. That start compared to Massa was clinical, just pure clean air, and that move on Vettel? It was like overtaking someone driving through molasses...🙏

They’ll probably be at each other's throats by the second race, but honestly, the odds of either of them grabbing the title look pretty slim since they're just going to spend the whole year stealing points from one another....

Arthur Roberts12 said:every single race feels like a snooze fest if it’s just Alonso taking the win🙂, and then having Massa up on the podium

Man, I'm really struggling to see Massa finding his groove anytime soon...

I honestly feel like things might actually flip...

Like, Massa's been steadily climbing the ladder season after season, so I'm actually expecting big things from him this time around...

Also, I'm crossing my fingers that they finally narrow down the track width and make the cars wider—you know, like making them so chunky that passing someone is basically pure science fiction because there's zero room to squeeze by in a corner🙏

this whole system needs a rule where you have to do at least two or even three pit stops, right? because what we just saw was a total disaster... "I couldn't push hard because I had to save my tires" 👎

the funniest part for me was hearing Mass tell him, "look, if you can't go fast, you have to save the engine for this race and the next one" 🙄

man, this race would’ve been about as exciting as watching snow melt in the driveway if Vettel hadn't had that breakdown 🙏

come on Felipe, let's go! 🙏

It’s pretty obvious at this point that Massa is going to absolutely tear into Fernando Alonso for the rest of the season, even if he's gonna have to fight tooth and nail to do it—kind of like trying to crack a rock-hard walnut compared to how Kimi handles things. 🙏

Honestly, if you ask me? I don't really care if it's Alexander Hamilton or someone else entirely. It doesn't change much for me. 🤷 If Kimi Räikkönen’s leading the pack, then yeah, obviously he's ahead of him. 😁

Look, if Kimi Räikkönen is behind the wheel, he better be out there leading the pack from the jump. If he’s gonna drive like some old lady at a grocery store, though? Honestly, whatever happens, happens. I don't care. 🙏

Arthur Doyle70 said:Not drastic?? 😕 I don't know about that... I definitely disagree... but okay, let's look at it this way: they're enough to separate the elite from the mediocre or just average drivers in F1...☕

I don't really have a super solid opinion on this or anything...

Like, who can you actually say is better than their teammate without just being a biased fanboy? No real logic behind it, just talking...

Okay, sure, Alonso vs. Pickett—that's too obvious, but those two are different animals entirely, totally different experience levels and whatever else...

But hey, we had Hamilton and Alonso back in the day, and while Hamilton is a legend, it doesn't matter how you slice it, you know deep down the gap wasn't massive...

And you guys already know my take on Kimi Massa....

Kubica and Nick Heidfeld? To me, Heidfeld was totally underrated, like a second driver who was just in a different headspace compared to Kubica...

Plus, there's the physical stuff, right? Like how some bodies just fit certain cars better than others...

A million things play into it, but again, the gaps are small. Nothing crazy....

Fanboying aside, obviously there's a huge gap there, but realistically? It's actually pretty tiny. 🤷

Arthur Doyle70 said:I don't know, man, I just can't get on board with that. You’ve got drivers who are absolute legends and then you've got the ones who just sort of exist, right? If we're saying there's a clear divide when people are sitting in top-tier cars, why wouldn't that same gap show up when they're stuck in slower machinery? By your logic, you're basically saying Fernando Alonso and Nelson Piquet are exactly the same level, which... yeah, no. Think about it. That whole thing where Alonso manages to drag a mediocre car into the points—you know, the stuff where he's playing it smart, dialing in the setup, driving with his head instead of just mashing the pedal—that's real. It’s not some mysterious "X factor" or whatever; it's just the literal definition of what separates the elite from the rest. It's the difference between someone winning races in a fast car and someone actually grabbing a podium or scoring points even when their car is a total dog.🤷

Look, I mean, you’re not wrong, for sure. There are definitely differences there, but honestly? It’s not like they're that massive or anything...
I mean, I guess you’ve got a point there. It’s way easier to manage a driver when there’s a clear hierarchy in place—you know exactly who the number one guy is and who’s playing support. It's like having a playbook ready to go. Trying to navigate a race when nobody knows their role? That’s just asking for chaos. It’s much harder to drive when you don't have that 1-2 setup to lean on.

Look, let's be real—Alonso is a total master at what he does. But even with guys like him, you can clearly see when there's a designated number one driver in the cockpit. It’s that obvious hierarchy where everyone knows exactly who the boss is. Honestly, it just reminds me of how things used to run over at McLaren, you know? I feel like I'm blanking on a few other teams that played that same game... someone please hit me up if any other names come to mind.

And honestly, there’s just so much stuff going on behind the scenes that we don't see. Like, remember how we all used to clown on Alonso back when he was at McLaren? Calling him a total softie or whatever? Yeah, maybe we were wrong. There’s probably some shady business happening under the hood—like, maybe certain drivers or even just the "golden boys" were getting special treatment, like being allowed to start with less fuel or some other rigged advantage. It’s probably all there if you know where to look.

Look, I mean, obviously there are gaps between drivers. Like, yeah, thank God we actually categorize them as better or worse, because let's be real, nobody is arguing against that. But it’s not like we're seeing these massive, night-and-day differences anymore... I don't know how to put it... they just aren't that extreme right now.

And now everyone’s just jumping on the bandwagon to clown on Nelson Piquet, but seriously, who actually knows what kind of junk he was driving? Look, I’m not trying to make excuses for him or anything, but let's be real—he and Fernando Alonso were clearly not even in the same league when it came to their cars. It’s like comparing a beat-up old Ford to a high-end Ferrari; you can't judge the driver without looking at the machine. 🤷

Nelson Piquet definitely isn't some genius who can just figure out how to rip off Alonso's tactics. 🤷

started or I'll get flagged for being off-topic (again 😬): this race turned out way better than expected, even though it started off feeling totally slow and old-school... man, if Kimi Räikkönen had grabbed just one more point, and if Lewis Hamilton hadn't nearly spun off into oblivion at one point 😍

🙂

honestly, it feels like there are more people on this forum rooting against someone than actually having a favorite driver they're pulling for....🙏

I don't really care who loses; if someone's just faster on the track, then shut up and deal with it, simple as that....
but hey, since I've been gone for a minute, does anyone know what's up with Sato? Is he still waiting for his big break in F1 or is he racing somewhere else now? 🙏

Arthur Doyle70 said:I mean, what am I supposed to get from your take?? 🤷

It feels like no matter what the kid does, you're just gonna chalk it up to luck or whatever... so there's really no point in even debating this...
All I said was that despite having a total junker of a car, he drove way more aggressively than most—which some people love and others don't, just my two cents—and compared to Mass, he actually pulled points out of nowhere (the results prove it). Basically, if you look at the rest of the field, you can count on one hand how many drivers can actually squeeze extra performance out of a slower car. You've got Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, Robert Kubica, Sebastian Vettel, and Kimi when he’s actually feeling it...☕

Props to Maria Nelson2 for trying, but this idea that guys can just "do more" in a slower car is basically fairy tales for kids...

Kimi can't do anything about it; he's fast, but he's admitted himself he doesn't have a clue about car setup. He flies when everything is perfect, but he's not great at dialing in the car when it isn't...

Kubica and Vettel aren't even driving bad cars, last year or this year. They're as competitive as their machinery allows them to be, so credit where credit's due.🙏

Hamilton drives aggressive, which is a plus because that works for a lot of drivers, but it doesn't work against Alonso. Honestly, I bet half their duels would end with both of them spinning off into the grass...

Like, take that one time I remember Mass getting totally washed by Hamilton in the rain—can't quite recall the exact track, maybe it was when the track started drying and everyone was being reckless. I think Nelson Piquet ended up second and Mass was first... and Hamilton just cruised past them both without much of a fight. Piquet overshot, and Mass basically just gave up...

Truth is, this guy drove great and had a pretty quick car, but everything just turned out super messy...
Alonso probably knows how to tune a car better than anyone, so in my book, he might be the only one who could squeeze a tiny bit more out of that thing, but even then, it's marginal...

I respect how aggressive Hamilton and Alonso drive, but that's where the mistakes happen. Trying to react perfectly in a split second is nearly impossible...🤷
And honestly, whenever someone goes wheel-to-wheel with Hamilton, I don't know why, but I always expect both of them to end up in the gravel trap...🤷

I don't hate the guy, and I actually like him more than most, I just see it that way...🙏
China Trip - Shanghai (April 19, 2009) in Formula 1 ·
Arthur Doyle70 said:I think you caught my drift, regardless of how messy that race was... the car was seriously good... way more stable and had a ton more downforce than what Lewis Hamilton had yesterday...

Look, I think you’re talking way too much trash about Lewis Hamilton. Okay, fine, you don't like him, that's your thing, but this isn't being objective. Respect. 👍 Just tell me one thing—where exactly is Felipe Massa better season after season?? Sure, the kid puts in the work and honestly drives better than his teammate who just doesn't seem to care, but saying he's getting better and better? I think that's a bit of a stretch....🤷

But look, the kid is a solid driver from year to year. He makes fewer mistakes, you can see his composure, and he doesn't do stupid stuff.....

A couple of seasons ago, there was so much crap happening on his end plus issues with the team that basically blew any chance at a title fight....

Now I'm thinking back to that red light incident in Canada and all those dumb crashes and whatnot....

Last season he drove great, even if he had those brain-fart moments spinning out in the rain at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Not that I'd say the guy can't handle wet tracks—he was alright yesterday, and don't even get me started on Brazil, or Monaco where he was looking like the best out there until that breakdown or whatever happened...

But real talent shows up when you're overtaking, and I find it fascinating how Kimi keeps bragging when he hasn't really done anything in the last two years since winning the championship....

And honestly, whether he's "uninterested" or not, he just doesn't look good out there on the track....

Last year Massa did everything humanly possible to be champion, but man, sometimes you just need some luck on your side....

Just gotta remind you that Lola lost a race that was already in the bag with two laps left because of an engine failure. That wasn't his fault. And that weird mess with the hose dragging in the pits? Also not his fault....

So, I really don't see what the issue is here. He's consistently better than Kimi on the grid, yet people claim it's all the car and that he lacks real skill....

And I haven't seen anyone actually beat him in a head-to-head battle lately, so what's the deal? 🤷

Arthur Doyle70 said:Look, man, I think you’re being a bit too much of a snob about this 🤣🤣

Yesterday, Hamilton's drive was basically one long series of "pirouettes"😁 but the guy is fighting a car that's basically starving for downforce, and he still managed to finish and grab points in the rain... Plus, when you factor in how aggressively he pushes those tires... I mean, come on...
Comparing him to Massa is just ridiculous. What Massa did with a car that actually had decent grip compared to an MP4/24 is absurd... The guy dragged a total bucket of a car across the line and grabbed points alongside Kov together... All this talk about luck, luck, luck... give me a break, show some originality here...👍

Hold up, hold up... maybe my brain is just failing me, but if I remember right, everyone was spinning out at that race. Even Kimi did it twice, maybe three times? And someone else probably did five "pirouettes" while Massa convincingly did the most at six....

If I recall correctly....

And now you're trying to compare downforce to what happened yesterday???

I mean, Hamilton was doing that stuff all five times, but let's be real, these are just excuses and silly comparisons at this point...

Even if Massa had done what he did yesterday, people would've laughed him out of the cockpit and called for a penalty...

Man, the guy spins out and then just charges back onto the track like some wild animal....
I know for sure I saw someone—I can't remember who exactly—almost take him out twice....

He's a bit of a loose cannon, but honestly, I love drivers like that, even if he overdoes it every once in a while.🙏

Personally? I don't even think he deserves to be sitting in an F1 cockpit right now. ☕
And honestly, I feel like Ferrari is just a total mess—just a bunch of frauds, really. ☕

But seriously, hearing people claim Hamilton drove better than Massa yesterday is just plain stupid. Like, beyond stupid. Yesterday, Hamilton was only better than Piquet and Trulli. ☕

Even Nakajima was better than Hamilton, and the only reason he ended up with points was pure, dumb luck. That’s just the truth. You’re supposed to be able to control the car when you spin out, but hey, who can actually control a car? If you can't, you're off the track. ☕ istav ot ☕

Kovalainen is consistently way slower than Hamilton, and by a lot. He tried slowing him down and trying to let him pass, yet he still finished ahead of him. 🤣 I mean, what bigger proof do you need than that? 🤣

I gotta be real with you, I just don't get that line of thinking...
I respect where you're coming from, but it just doesn't make sense and it isn't realistic...

Look, there's a difference between not liking a driver and saying they shouldn't even be on the starting grid.

Because, look, regardless of how you slice it, the reality is that Massa has been driving as well as, or maybe even better than, anyone else over the last two or three years.

My take is that a guy doesn't necessarily have to be some "natural" to be a good, solid driver.
What I like about Massa is that you can actually see him getting better year after year.

Maybe Massa isn't a generational talent like Kimi, Hamilton, or Alonso—they say he's more of a "trained" driver.

But honestly, that doesn't matter because he performs great on the track, and that's what counts.

It's not like he doesn't pull off moves or show what he's capable of.

And hey, he didn't just stumble into a seat at Ferrari by accident. I remember watching him drive for Sauber with Heidfeld, and I truly think Nick is a massively underrated driver. 🙏

Man, it reminds me of looking at someone like Mike Tyson in boxing. He's incredibly talented and skilled, but then you see guys who are ten times less gifted end up being better because they actually dedicated themselves to the sport. They know their flaws and work to fix them while sharpening their strengths, whereas this guy just wastes his talent like a drunk. 🤷

And now they're finally getting smacked back. But you know what's wild? They spend all this time obsessing over who gets the driver's seat and what the lineup looks like, but if you ask me, the real reason they're dropping titles isn't the drivers.
