Ayy! There’s more where that came from... just for the lazy ones out there.

Maybe. But my point with the hyperbole was really just that her singing technique is totally unconventional. I read in an interview once that Joanna studied voice while she was doing her music degree, but eventually realized there was no way to "train" her voice... and honestly, just like anything else in life, you have to know the rules before you can break them, otherwise you're just making a mess of things. I truly think Joanna knows exactly what she's doing with her voice, and that’s honestly where a huge part of her artistry comes from...

driftingeagle27 said:And there it is, that same issue again. My favorite instruments are definitely guitar, bass, and drums.

That's fair. Personally, though, I find the guitar to be one of the most boring instruments out there, and the whole classic rock band setup just feels kind of stale to me... 🙂Hey, to each their own, right?

driftingeagle27 said:That’s why I’m on this forum instead of one dedicated to, say, classical music from ancient times—back when they hadn't even invented the lyre or piano yet, thanks for the lesson today by the way! 🙂—when it was mostly just harps and harpsichords...

So it covers everything: acting, literature, classical, history, theater...

It makes sense, I guess, but I still don't see where the pop fits in here. Not to mention rock and roll.

But why does it have to be pop or rock & roll?? 😕Do you really think music can't be "good" unless it falls into those categories?

And what makes you think classical music doesn't belong on this forum??

Why bother sticking to genre boxes at all? The world would be so damn boring if every single song was just pop or rock...

driftingeagle27 said:a) maybe it’s finally clicking why I’m just not feeling it, te
b) next time I give it a spin, I might actually be able to spot the merits in it—maybe even enough to say if someone asks, "It’s actually really good, it just doesn't do it for me."
🙂

I honestly don't expect you to dig Joanna Newsom, it's crystal clear to me that she isn't everyone's cup of tea, and that's totally fine, people have all kinds of weird tastes and it's no big deal. So what if you think it's garbage. It doesn't even cross my mind to try and talk you into changing your mind. There is so much music out there that I can't even stand for ten seconds, yet millions of people all over the US are buying it by the truckload. 🤷
I'll never truly wrap my head around the mindset of someone who listens to mainstream country radio. To me, that world is completely incomprehensible and alien... probably in the same way Joanna Newsom feels alien to you.

We all look for some kind of sonic world in our music that fits us perfectly. Joanna Newsom isn't your world, Arctic Monkeys aren't mine, and so what, for crying out loud. Everyone does their own thing. I don't see why we have to understand one another. 😉

Man, I’m just so stoked that there are actually this many replies and cool reactions happening here, plus all these fans too... 😍

Now that I've been listening back to it... I get to the end of a track and I just feel like I can't move on to the next one yet, I need some time to actually process what I just heard...

I mean... I totally have this habit where I'll just put one single song on repeat like thirty times in a row... 😵

wiredharbor22 said:Sometimes I can't tell if the music is following the lyrics or if the lyrics are just perfectly capturing the vibe of the music...

Yeah, there’s definitely something to that... I honestly think the notes and the rhythm carry just as much weight as the actual words, because great composers know how to speak through the music itself...

Brenda Scott14 said:I get what you're saying, but honestly, I’ve just never been able to experience her music as something purely beautiful...
If I had to pick one word for it, I’d go with: melancholy.
To me, that sense of melancholy can't ever feel "absolutely beautiful," and that's where that seed of ugliness comes in, or maybe it's just that raw authenticity you're looking for...
Of course, to really catch that vibe, you probably need to pay closer attention to the lyrics.
Which, in some places, are basically straight-up poetry. Like:

the hills are groaning with excess,
like a table ceaselessly being set

And that part is stunning to me...

I know EXACTLY what you mean! I actually got Ys as a gift, maybe for Christmas or a birthday a few years back. Even though I’d heard one song by Joanna Newsom before and liked it (Book of Right On), I just couldn't get through Ys because it was exactly that—way too melancholy. For the longest time. But then one day it just hit me, and I listened to it again and it finally clicked. From there, I slowly started diving into the rest of her discography. How you perceive melancholy really just depends on your mood, or even just whatever phase of life you're going through at the moment...

It's just like what she said...
wiredharbor22 said:Again, I think there's a time for everything. Maybe Cosmia feels totally mid or even gross to you right now, but maybe one day you'll find yourself remembering it and listening to it without even knowing why, and you won't even realize how much your perspective shifted...

Exactly that...

driftingeagle27 said:Can you actually back that up? Like, why? What makes it so great to you?

Music is basically just an emotional experience at its core. Whatever you happen to vibe with—whether it’s death metal, jazz, Britney Spears, or Joanna Newsom—it hits because it triggers these specific associations, feelings, and memories that belong solely to you. No one else can see the world through your eyes, no matter how hard they try...

That’s why you "don't see how it could relate to your life." Because it doesn't have to. Why would it? Most of us feel that way about pretty much any music we don't listen to, so it's really nothing out of the ordinary...

Though I doubt you'll be satisfied with my answer (since you seem to be looking for someone to win an argument with, which is impossible), since you're pushing so hard, I'll try to explain why I dig Joanna Newsom...

First off, it's her voice and that singing technique, which is just so unique and incredibly gutsy. On one hand, she breaks every single rule in the book and sings in a way that would probably give a vocal coach a literal heart attack. But on the other hand, she nails every single note, she's got perfect pitch, and her vocal cords hit these insanely pure frequencies. Plus, while she's singing, she's essentially acting. She can channel so many different moods and personas—humor, sarcasm, being two-faced, nostalgia, euphoria, anxiety, defiance... she communicates all of that through her tone rather than just the lyrics. That's a rare skill, and honestly, not many singers have that kind of instinct...

The second thing for me is the harp, which is easily one of my favorite instruments, right up there with the cello. I can't really "argue" why I love it, though. It's just the texture of the sound; it can feel warm and soft one second, then sharp and cold the next. I love how those rapid-fire notes cascade down almost all at once, like a bunch of pearls spilling onto the floor. That's just how it looks in my head. Maybe that means nothing to you, but I process music quite visually, so my explanations might not make total sense to everyone...

Thirdly, it's the songwriting. She could publish her lyrics as books and they'd still be incredible. I love the contrast between that unconventional, almost childlike voice and those archaic, old-school verses. Her songs feel like epic poems; it's hard to believe someone so young wrote them. There's so much depth there. She can inhabit different characters within a song, playing all of them plus the narrator. Sometimes it feels less like listening to a track and more like watching a play. Honestly, I always picture her as a character in some stage production, and I really like that persona because she has such this intriguing, magnetic charisma...

So yeah, that's why I'm into Joanna Newsom.

Happy now? 🙂

Man, I don't know if I'm even ready to process this one... avant-garde opera. Ugh. It's definitely not for everyone, honestly quite a heavy listen. But it isn't just one repetitive thing; it actually shifts around. I finally hit track 07- Variation of birds and it kicked off as pure noise, almost like some Merzbow set. I was seriously about to turn it off, but then something incredible started happening. I can't even put it into words. You guys just have to hear it. 07. Variation of birds. wow!

Most of it is just super, super, super experimental. It hits those atonal spots, and sometimes it doesn't even feel like music, just raw soundscapes. I'm gonna keep digging through it, and if I stumble onto anything else amazing, I'll drop an edit. I can't help myself when I get like this, I just have to write down whatever pops into my head right away. :P

[edit]
here I am...
Oh, and CD2 is a totally different vibe. These are my favorites:
03. Colouring of Pigeons - probably the most "normal" track on the whole album. It actually features vocals from Karin Dreijer, unlike the rest. It sounds pretty Knife-asto. I really dig it, it's good.
04. Seeds - this reminds me of the intro to like a Pen. I love it. There are some really interesting vocal arrangements going on here.
a
06. The Height of Summer is basically built on Heartbeats, and I won't hear otherwise.

The second disc is definitely way more alive and rhythmic than the first. The first one is a grind and demands a lot of patience, but if you're a fan of The Knife and you're looking for a new The Knife album, then CD2 is absolutely the one for you. 🙂 I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

The Knife opera "Tomorrow in a Year" is finally available to stream online over at http://theknife.net/...

I haven't actually sat down to listen to the whole thing yet so I can't really give a full review or anything... I just hit play a few minutes ago and all I'm hearing right now are these weird little droplet sounds... My cat is going absolutely nuts though, trying to crawl inside the speaker because she thinks there's something in there or something... 🤣

I guess some mod decided this was just trolling. 🤷

Brenda Scott14 said:anyway, Ys is definitely the better album for me, since my focus tends to drift a bit during Milk-Eyed Mender.

I think you've got a point there, even though my absolute favorite tracks are from Milk-Eyed Mender, Ys feels like the superior album when you look at the concept... MEM is a little more all over the place.

Who knows how this new record is actually going to turn out. It sounds pretty risky to me, a triple album??? Man... Even though I love Joanna Newsom and this new track is just phenomenal, listening to her and these live recordings, it feels like her voice has shifted a bit, like she’s matured, and the whole thing sounds really promising, but god, a triple album, it'll probably take me five years to fully process it. Especially with the way she writes lyrics. Her language is kind of archaic, plus sometimes the accent makes it a struggle to follow, and she’s basically writing modern-day Iliads and Odysseys. I had to take those older albums in really slowly too.
But regardless, I'm excited. Can't wait for it to drop. 😁

It honestly makes my day seeing other Joanna fans around here. 🙂

So I actually stumbled onto something new today, I managed to track down three live bootlegs featuring unreleased tracks that are definitely gonna make the cut on the upcoming album: http://consequenceofsound.net/2010/0...-high-quality/ they give me such heavy Kate Bushasto vibes...
Joanna Newsom in Music ·
Sadie was never really my favorite or anything, but calling her a one-hit wonder?!?!?! That’s straight up blasphemy...🙂

😛

Looking back now, I see that "The Book of Right-On" and "Sprout and the Bean" are her top tracks on Last.fm, so I guess I was right about those two being my absolute favorites too... 😁
Joanna Newsom in Music ·
Man, if you’ve already dived into Peach Plum Pear—which honestly blows most people's minds—then you are more than ready for the next level...

Personally, I can't get enough of "The Book of Right-On" and "Sprout and The Bean"... though "Emily" is probably my absolute favorite, that epic one about the meteors... 😵 Every single time someone even mentions a meteor, that track starts playing on loop in my head... And the meteorite is a source of the light, and the meteor's just what we see, and the meteoroid is a stone that's devoid of the fire that propelled it to thee.
😍

I KNOW there are some fans hanging out on this forum. I just know it. Just speak up already... 😛

Check out this latest track from the upcoming "have One on me" album, which is supposedly going to be a TRIPLE album... 😲
The song is called 81 and it's absolutely gorgeous. And Joanin's voice just keeps getting more and more beautiful with every listen...

The album is called 'Tomorrow in a Year'... does anyone have any more info on it?

Haven't heard a thing about it yet, but I'm definitely gonna go check it out now, thanxxxx!!!!
some stats on Kapula! 🤣
Look, I honestly have no clue where else I would’ve picked up that word besides just hearing it on some random cooking show on TV—which, by the way, is something I never, ever watch... In my family, or even among my friends and people I know, nobody calls an onion a "kapula," and you won't find anyone calling it that at the grocery store, or in any kitchen, or at a single restaurant in the whole country.

Please don't try to lecture me or make such a big deal out of something so trivial... You heard about those weird little things, great. Here's your gold medal, I guess.
🤦 yeah, whatever, man.

Look, I'm from Washington, D.C., and nobody around here says "Kapula"... maybe you think that's just common slang or something, but personally, I'm sorry, it just doesn't fly with me...
Sometimes I’ll catch one of those cooking shows on TV, and every few minutes someone will mention adding some kind of "Kapula," just dropping the word left and right while the chef tosses some random white bits into the pan... you can't even tell if it's garlic, onions, or something else entirely... I actually had to go look it up online to figure out what on earth they meant by "Kapula" 🤣

It was just onions, by the way.

I also finally figured out what "crackling" means the other day... 🤣 Man, I love that word. It’s just such a great term. Honestly, it sounds a hundred times better than saying something is "savory" or "tender." A hundred times.
500 Statista people? Let's all just head down to Statista in San Francisco... 😁
