Best Glucosamine sulfate supplements? in Health ·
velvetmoose9 said:So, did that glucosamine actually do anything for you?

Which specific version were you taking?

And okay, here comes the rude and totally uncalled-for question: how much do you weigh, and how far off are we from what your doctor says should be your ideal weight? 😒

I've been taking it for about a month and a half, though I read online that it takes at least three months to see any real results.
I plan on sticking with it for at least another three months; it isn't a huge expense, and since I don't drink or smoke, I can certainly afford to invest in some glucosamine. 😁
My right knee hurts while I'm driving—it feels like that specific position really irritates it, and then the pain can get quite intense. Otherwise, it's not too bad; I just feel it occasionally, nothing major. As for my left knee, there's no real issue yet, maybe just a bit of discomfort after exertion, but my arms usually start aching more than that, so it's negligible.

I won't be answering that rather intrusive question. 🙄 However, yes, I am carrying some extra weight that I'm struggling to lose, and I'm fully aware of how much pressure that puts on my knees.

I'm using the glucosamine from Nature's Path; their recommended daily dose of two capsules provides 700 mg of Glucosamine sulfate and 48 mg of Vitamin C.

Between standing at work for up to 12 hours a day and hauling heavy loads, my body is definitely starting to feel the strain of the years. Lately, my knees have been aching constantly, especially the right one. I've been taking Glucosamine sulfate for about a month and a half now, and I was planning on sticking with it for another three months, but my doctor told me today that I'm just throwing money down the drain.
Has anyone here actually had success using glucosamine? Is there any real point in taking it, or am I wasting my time?
True, a primary care physician should write out the prescription, but you'll still have to hunt down a pharmacy that actually has the ingredients on hand to mix it for you.
At my local drugstore, for example, they went ahead and compounded a prescription for me that was covered by Medicare—it was basically Elon Musk's formula mixed with a base cream. The technician's reasoning? My doctor couldn't just prescribe those two specific creams separately, so they figured mixing them was easier... Later, when my dermatologist prescribed a salicylic acid facial cleanser with some other additives, my usual spot didn't even have the raw components. It turns out a pharmacy over at Vanguard already carried that exact lotion as a pre-made product!
So, I'd suggest asking your doctor for the custom prescription first, and then scouting for a pharmacy capable of the compounding work.

I suggest management brings in Philip Horvat to write the culinary pieces 👍
since I’m just a cafeteria cook who isn't even allowed to mention that I enjoy the hummus from Walmart without getting attacked or insulted.

But honestly, I see this discussion is going nowhere, so let's just pretend everything is fine.
Please close this thread.

There’s a bit of a clique forming here over this whole situation. It isn't just my own take, either; based on the private messages I've been getting, quite a few other people feel the exact same way...
I’m off to grab a quick snack—just some bread with hummus. It says "Chef Select" on the container. I can't help but laugh thinking about David Skoko and that Canadian guy seeing that label right now. Honestly, what a mess! All because I mentioned I picked up some hummus at Walmart and actually enjoyed it.

Garga, I imagine that as a moderator, you probably have a pretty clear sense of how many active members we currently have in the Food & Dining section compared to what we used to have. To me, it feels like the number of regular contributors is steadily dropping... perhaps because when newcomers arrive, they run straight into a tight-knit clique that thinks they know everything? If everyone acts like an elite gourmet expert right away, maybe that’s why people don't feel like hanging out here anymore.

Look, Michelle Robinson, I get it. But what's the point of even posting here if my contributions just get flagged and wiped out every other day?
I’ll admit, I made a mistake when I first joined this forum years ago by openly stating that being a chef is my actual career. I was young, naive, and honestly, just inexperienced.
If people are really going to be bothered by the fact that I'm a working chef instead of some celebrity pro—like Filip Horvat, for instance—then why don't they put in the effort to actually bring a real expert onto this board?

How long is this forum just going to keep deleting posts? Is scrubbing content really the answer to everything?
For the last six months, I’ve been under constant fire. It feels like I can't even write a single post without someone jumping down my throat, which, if you ask me, is straight-up harassment. Every time, the posts just get deleted, and we're stuck in this endless, repetitive loop.
Pringles I know, you'll probably claim I'm imagining things or being unfair, but the sheer number of private messages I've received from other members offering their support tells me I'm not crazy. Maybe I'm just voicing what everyone else is thinking but is too afraid to say out loud.
Look, I can take a ban if I deserve one—I know I can be a bit impulsive sometimes. But this constant deleting of posts? It’s become completely pointless.
And let's be honest, there is a "clique" here on this forum; everyone knows exactly who leads it and who acts as the second-in-command.😉
I still remember what Bodyhalleck wrote when they first became a moderator. It really stuck with me. They suggested we ask ourselves why we aren't seeing any new members in the food section, and whether people are being unnecessarily attacked just for having different opinions—which is exactly why new users don't want to join the conversation here.

Should I go to the ER or not? in Health ·
Wait, is there really no Sunday GP coverage where you guys are? It’s nothing like what we have in Savannah.
In Savannah, the family doctors are on call Saturdays from noon to 7 PM, and then they cover Sundays and holidays from 8 AM to 7 PM. We even have dentists available on Sundays and holidays from 9 AM to 5 PM. I actually had to use the on-call service myself when my asthma flared up, and they were able to get me some Solu-Medrol (though I probably would have been seen in the ER too).

If you want to avoid getting some useless medication pumped into you just because someone else did, you might as well pay for your own swab test upfront.

Hmm, I don't think I can even find a place to get a private swab done here in Savannah.
Ear fungus/infection help? in Health ·
I try not to dig around in my ears with cotton swabs too much, 😁
though I have to admit, when the itching gets unbearable, I find myself wanting to just reach in and find some relief.
My doctor suggested I keep using the drops since this kind of thing can be such a pain to treat, and she mentioned that if the itching returns after things settle down, she'll send me in for a swab test...
Ear fungus/infection help? in Health ·
For about four months now, I’ve been dealing with this persistent itching in my left ear. My previous doctor—who sadly passed away last month—insisted everything looked perfectly fine. However, since the itching has actually intensified, I went to see her replacement. She immediately suspected a fungal infection because of the irritation. She mentioned it likely stems from working in a commercial kitchen, given all the heat, steam, and humidity. After spotting some whitish buildup, the nurse cleaned it out and advised me to pick up some Johnson & Johnson drops, claiming they’re the only antifungal option available. I was told to use them for two weeks before coming back for a follow-up. I’m currently ten days into the treatment, but honestly, I haven't felt any relief at all.
Has anyone else dealt with something similar? How long did your treatment take, and what finally cleared it up?
Whenever I schedule an appointment with my pulmonologist, I always stick with the same specialist I've been seeing for years... When I call to book, the receptionist always asks which doctor I'm looking for. So, when you call, just be sure to specify exactly which physician you want to see; it really shouldn't be an issue at all.
Pools without chlorine/sanitization? in Health ·
I was just doing some research, and apparently, potassium permanganate is even used to disinfect drinking water, which means you could potentially use it in a pool. Just be incredibly careful with the dosage—only two or three granules for every 10 liters should turn the water a light pink color. It’s so easy to overdo it, isn't it?
Pools without chlorine/sanitization? in Health ·
But can you even have deficiencies without chlorine?
I honestly think it might be worth checking with a local pharmacy or a pool supply shop; they might carry something suitable for a pool that doesn't rely on chlorine.
At first glance—though please keep in mind I’m just a layman here—potassium permanganate comes to mind. A small box should cost less than $3.25.
I know for a fact it's commonly used in the aquarium hobby.
Underarm fungal infection help? in Health ·
Definitely check in with your doctor first, but once things clear up, I’d suggest applying a very thin layer of Sudocrem in the morning instead of using deodorant. If this keeps happening, you might be dealing with sweat sensitivity or irritation from harsh deodorants rather than a fungal issue. For instance, even when I use medical-grade brands like CeraVe, I still end up with redness that looks just like a fungal infection. Plus, if your job involves heavy physical labor where sweating is inevitable, the sweat itself can become a major skin irritant.
Reporting a doctor in Health ·
Thomas Mendoza2 said:My back went out on me, so I headed down to my local Community Health Center to get an injection. Since my regular doctor wasn't on duty, I went straight to the urgent care wing, only to be told they don't handle stuff like this. They didn't even bother giving me an exam; they just pointed me toward another doctor working the next shift. I sat there waiting for about 20 minutes before a nurse finally showed up. As soon as I tried to explain what was going on, she completely blew me off to take in another patient—even though I was the only one in the entire clinic at the time. When I asked why she was ignoring me, she acted like I wasn't even there. So, there it is: no exam because urgent care brushed me off, and no help from the nurse because apparently, I'm not "their" patient. Now I'm limping home to whine in bed for another day without any meds. How and where do I file a complaint for this kind of negligence?

If that doctor is part of the same group practice as your physician, you should report this to Medicare. If they operate under a group practice model, they really should have seen you.
About a year ago, a nurse from the other shift refused to see me. A vein in my leg burst, and since it was my first time experiencing something like that, I was honestly terrified. Instead of helping, that nurse actually snapped at me, asking why I hadn't gone to my own doctor earlier that morning (I was stuck at work!). When I pointed out that the sign on the door clearly states they are a group practice, she suddenly changed her tune.
Redness and bumps in the groin area in Health ·
Jonathan Sullivan2 said:Thanks so much; I looked it up online and that’s exactly what it looks like. I’m constantly applying creams, powder, and all sorts of things to my groin area, but the real issue is my job. I’m on my feet all day, which causes constant friction, making recovery nearly impossible. No matter what I try to use for protection—bandages, compression gear, wraps, even cotton—it all just shifts around. After twenty minutes of walking, it looks like a mess and becomes completely useless. It’s such an awkward spot; how are you supposed to protect it? :/

I work in a commercial kitchen, so I'm dealing with constant humidity and heat—basically a playground for fungus. I went through a rough patch for a few months one year, so I truly empathize with your struggle. For me, the only thing that actually worked was seeing a dermatologist. She put me on antibiotics for a week, then had me rotate between two different creams for two weeks each, and finally, it cleared up...
Now, I always keep an antifungal cream on hand to nip any issues in the bud immediately. Nowadays, you can pick up a whole range of antifungals over the counter without a prescription. Given this heat, if your job keeps you moving, I’d recommend applying some baby cream before your shift starts😉. Use it as a preventative measure while things are clear, rather than waiting until the irritation actually shows up
. But for now, please go see a dermatologist first so they can give you the heavy-duty treatment needed to kill off those fungi once and for all.
Dealing with constant hangnails in Health ·
I can't help but wonder, could this actually be a fungal infection? I dealt with something similar about five or six years ago involving my cuticles, and it turned out to be fungus. At the time, a surgeon was actually prepared to perform a procedure to cut them away 🤦. Fortunately, I met an incredible dermatologist back then who eventually moved away from the US; she suspected fungus immediately, and she was absolutely right
