Great topic, but I wouldn't generalize too much here. Honestly, any movie—no matter how you slice it—can be considered art in the broadest sense of the word, even if it lacks real artistic merit.
We’ve definitely seen plenty of examples, and there are tons of movies that could easily fit into both categories at once...
The whole "art" label gets thrown around way too often just to excuse a total flop in certain cases, so I try not to fall into that trap.
I voted that I love them both equally! Though, don't get me wrong, I can't stand the massive commercialization and the "industry for industry's sake" vibe... where they use those cheap, cookie-cutter marketing schemes just to drag crowds into theaters without actually giving them anything worth watching.
That's honestly why those critic aggregator sites exist anyway... they can convince you something is worth a look before you even step foot in the theater.🙂 It saves you money and time!☕
Was he still just a young, up-and-coming director back thirteen years ago? 😬 Well, just today, he’s basically proving everything people already suspected about him...
Honestly, I find his work gets better and better as time goes on. That's why I'm so incredibly hyped for Isle of Dogs! 😁

So, I was just thinking about that massive showdown... it's basically a Battle of the Blockbusters! On one side, you've got the absolute heavy hitter, Once Upon a Time in America... and man, what a ride that movie is. It’s intense, it’s moody, it really sticks with you long after the credits roll... But then you have to weigh it against everything else out there. It's such a tough call! Just staring at these cinematic giants and trying to decide which one hits harder... turns out, it's a real toss-up! Battle of the Blockbusters! Blade Runner (1982) vs... what else? I can't even think straight right now! My mind is just racing through all those neon-soaked streets and rainy alleys... It’s such a vibe, you know? Just pure atmosphere! Who takes the win for you? The Matrix vs... what? I can't even finish the thought! Honestly, thinking about that movie just gets my brain spinning in circles... It’s such a trip! I was sitting there thinking, could anything actually top it? Like, if we were looking at a massive Battle of the Blockbusters, where does it land? Is it standing tall against the heavy hitters, or does it get swallowed up by the classics? I mean, you look at something like The Dark Knight, and suddenly everything feels so much more grounded, right? But then you have the pure, mind-bending insanity of The Matrix... man, that green tint alone stays in your head for days! Anyway, I'm just rambling now... but seriously, what are we even comparing it to today? The possibilities are endless... Oh man, I was just thinking about *The Shining*... that absolute masterpiece from 1980! Seriously, Kubrick was on another level with this one. The atmosphere? Just finished watching Spiklence... Svankmajer 😬 is someone I wasn't really deep into before this. Honestly, I'm still scratching my head trying to find decent subtitles for it anywhere online 😬 you really have to master the art of making a silent film where every single shot feels earned and justified.
I don't know, I just get this feeling that surrealists at their best are basically just trolling us... like Bunuel with that subtle, biting critique of the upper class (though I guess his whole body of work is surrealist, if you want to pick out specific pieces), or even David Lynch at the end of the day.
I think I'll keep digging into this at this exact pace 🙂
Just finished watching Pickpocket. Seriously good. The atmosphere, those clever plot turns, the way the camera moves... Honestly, it’s easily the best thing I’ve seen from Bresson so far, and I definitely plan on diving deeper into his work soon.
Those close-up shots during the meticulously planned thefts? Pure mastery. That scene where the woman pulls out her purse while buying tickets—absolutely priceless.
So much symbolism in this one... definitely not an easy watch. I wouldn't say I exactly "enjoyed" it, per se, but there are some gorgeous sequences tucked in between those dark moments that just stick in your brain forever. I’m not sure if it’s fair to call this Lynch's most experimental work, though you could argue that from a certain angle, much like how people view the Straight Story 😬 . But hey, it all depends on how you read it! It wasn't until I was grabbing coffee with a buddy later that it finally clicked for me... the whole thing seems to be about the fear of fatherhood. Once you see it that way, the mutant kid metaphor, all those high-strung characters, even that post-apocalyptic vibe... it all starts making sense.
It’s disturbing, it's dark, and it stays with you. Honestly, it just leaves you feeling totally mixed up and confused 😁
So, I'm looking to upgrade my setup because I really need to get serious with some heavy-duty software like Adobe Premiere and Lightroom... and let me tell you, my current rig just isn't cutting it! I definitely need a 64-bit processor and at least 8 GB of RAM—though I guess I could scrape by with 4 GB if I had to—plus all the other standard specs. My desktop is stuck on 32-bit which is a total dead end, and even though my laptop is 64-bit, it basically crawls whenever it tries to handle anything with its measly 2 GB of RAM.
What would you guys do if you were in my shoes? I'm still trying to wrap my head around what's actually out there and what I should be looking for, so my plan is to start saving up for something a bit more beefy. It doesn't necessarily have to be brand new from the store, either... I've been browsing used deals and it looks like I can snag something pretty decent for under $1000, but I guess the big question is how risky is buying used? As far as the hardware goes, I just need the tower itself since I already have a monitor ready to go.
The main goal here is just making sure these programs run smoothly without constant stuttering or crashing once I meet the minimum requirements.
I'd love to hear any advice or tips you might have!
I’ve actually just started really diving into his work over the last month or so... So far, I’ve checked out Mouchette, L'Argent, and The Trial of Joan of Arc. It’s pretty obvious how much that minimalism influenced later directors like Jim Jarmusch or Aki Kaurismäki, but for me personally, some parts feel a little unfinished... maybe because of that exact style, I don't know...
I really loved Mouchette... though L'Argent didn't quite hit the same way for me. As for The Trial of Joan of Arc, I wasn't exactly blown away—if I'm being honest... maybe I should've started with some of his other stuff instead? But hey, no regrets! I'm still planning to dive deeper into his work over the next few months... more to come!
I mean, I'm honestly not sure how much a new setup can really shake things up. But hey, I've got a feeling this one could actually beat the last few entries... you know, everything they've put out since 😬
Frank Richardson said:To film Apocalypse Now, he really should have been in shape and actually read the book that Francis Ford Coppola told him to study beforehand. Instead, he showed up carrying an extra 65 pounds and hadn't even cracked the spine of the book! That’s exactly why they had to film his scenes in the shadows...
and those camera angles were always adjusted just to fit him in 😬
I honestly loved his performance in Freshman, where he plays a comedic version of the Godfather. 🙂 Even if the movie itself isn't a total masterpiece, it's still such a blast to watch...😁
I wouldn't go as far as calling it pretentious. It’s definitely weird, totally unexpected, and super interesting in how much effort went into the craft... but like a few people here already pointed out, maybe it leans a little too hard into the metaphors...
It isn't bad at all, though there are moments where it gets a bit tough to sit through xD otherwise, it's such a cool foundation for digging into those themes, like virtual "realities" and all that stuff. I feel like there are plenty of spots where the most primitive human instincts get pushed to the absolute limit in a digital space, and I think they nailed that depiction...
But man, if I wanted the full picture, I felt like I needed just a little bit more...
Honestly, it’s one of those movies that’s so incredibly bad, it actually becomes good 😬
I mean, nobody takes this flick seriously anyway! If it weren't for how technically "competent" it is—at least when you look at the script and the acting—nobody would even remember it exists...
Plus, the whole backstory of how this thing was made is just wild. Tommy Wiseau is easily one of the most mysterious figures to ever hit the Hollywood scene. That’s why the Disaster Artist definitely deserves some love. Though, personally? I think they should've called the movie Masterpiece first, but sticking to the book title was probably for the best 😁
