She made her way slowly from the corner store toward the nearby bus stop, where a crowd had already gathered. A wooden cane was gripped in one hand, while the other hauled a heavy rolling suitcase. An elderly woman sat on the bench alongside two high school kids.
In a frail, trembling voice, she pleaded, "Sinclair, could you give me a hand up? My back and hips are killing meβI've had four surgeries..." and then began her long list of medical history, "...not to mention my blood sugar and blood pressure..."
The two teenagers exchanged looks, rolled their eyes, and reluctantly stood up.
Groaning as she sat back down, the old lady mumbled through a few more diagnoses and medication names while rummaging through her bag for her transit pass. Once found, she tucked it away, neatly organized her belongings, and watched the crowd with a sharp, piercing gaze, occasionally glancing down the street for the approaching bus.
As the station grew more crowded, she stood up and set her bag on the bench. "I have to get a better view. There are just too many people waiting," she muttered to herself.
Suddenly, the bus rounded the corner.
Almost instantly, she lunged for her massive bag and shoved her way recklessly toward the curb, aiming for exactly where the front doors were supposed to stop. In the chaos, she stepped hard on a woman's foot, swung her cane wildly in front of passersby, knocked a man's glasses right off his face, ran over a young girl's bright red ballet flats with her suitcase wheels, and elbowed a burly guy in the gut so hard he doubled over. Somehow, she managed to be the first one through the doors, marching straight to what was clearly her ideal seat.
...
Itβs truly incredible how much adrenaline a single bus can trigger! It's wild how much hidden strength, motivation, and drive a little rush of adrenaline can squeeze out of someone!
Maybe we all need an experience like that once a day if we ever want to make progress as a society, as a nation, or as a civilization!
