I honestly think Murakami is pretty overrated. I read 'Norwegian Wood' ages ago, and while it was decent, it didn't exactly blow my mind. I’ve actually had 'Dance Dance Dance' sitting on my shelf for years—it was a birthday gift—but I just can't bring myself to start it because I feel like I can already see exactly what kind of stylistic tricks he's trying to pull.
On the flip side, I absolutely adore Faulkner. Now I'm feeling a bit hesitant about watching this movie since the comments make it sound like it leans way too hard into that Murakami vibe.
Anyway, you guys just left Louis hanging even though he was actually addressing the topic. 😁

Only someone looking at this on a surface level would say that, and from what I can tell, he's definitely not one of those shallow types.☕

Isn't this stuff standard high school curriculum?
By the way, Dennis Martin6, if you're feeling generous, could you recommend some movies that align with your interpretation? I'm looking for films that use similar techniques to blur the line between fiction and art—to put it in terms a fifteen-year-old might actually understand.

it kind of reminded me of some of Atom Egoyan’s early stuff, like 'The Adjuster' or 'Exotica'.

Heh, I suppose I can see the resemblance to an insurance adjuster, though it’s really just a matter of perception.

There are other parallels too—mostly regarding those core themes and how they’re laid out. In both of Eggers' films, you've got these leads who build these totally artificial worlds just to fill some kind of internal void, eventually turning into complete enigmas by the end; then there's the whole identity duplication thing happening across different narrative layers, plus all three movies feature at least one central 'performance' scene, etc.

I really shouldn't be talking back here, given that my last encounter with an insurance adjuster was sixteen or eighteen years ago. My memory of those proceedings isn't exactly sharp these days.

Seen it a few times lately, so it’s pretty fresh in my mind. One of the best movies from the nineties—no contest. 😁
