Patrick Ness's Novel is hitting theaters this fall under the direction of J. A. Bayona (who did a killer job with Impossible with Ewan McGregor). It’s about a boy and a creature voiced by Liam Neeson. We've also got Sigourney Weaver and Felicity Jones joining the cast.

Between this and BFG, it's shaping up to be a pretty uplifting year. 🙂

The only thing I could find on the net was this translated edition of the book.

I caught the trailer yesterday at AMC Theatres right before they showed The Secret Life of Pets.
According to the AMC App, it’s hitting theaters on October 20th under the title "A Monster Calls".
I’m being a little cautious about getting my hopes up—mostly because I saw the trailer for Ex Machina playing too, and earlier they had the poster for Scorsese's Hugo displayed by the entrance, only for both of those projects to fall through. Plus, A Monster Calls feels like it has a much different vibe and subject matter than your typical popcorn blockbuster.

Right now, IMDb is listing the US release date as December 22nd.

On the other hand, if you check the AMC App, it says "A Monster Calls" doesn't hit their screens until January 12th.
Honestly, it actually makes a bit of sense—leading up to Christmas, theaters usually just dump everything into cartoons and those big family blockbusters, whereas this is a slightly darker story—probably better suited for that post-holiday January blues.

I don't quite follow. The film is based on a Novel, not a short novella.

It’s hard to tell from just a teaser if the movie will actually land, but looking at that cast, my gut tells me it could be something special.

The term "novel" can refer to both a full-length novel and a novella—it’s a bit of a sliding scale, really. So, you'll have to use your own judgment on that one. 😛

Caught this at the AMC Theatres tonight. Honestly, I had zero clue what I was getting into, so my expectations were pretty much non-existent. Based on the poster, I figured it’d be something dark and heavy, but maybe with a hopeful, uplifting message at the end.

And man, they nailed it. For a second there at the very start, I actually thought I was just watching another one of those kids' movies that rely way too much on CGI and flashy effects...

But then the movie starts moving... and wow, just wow. It hits you hard. The mix of mysticism and those gorgeous animations clashing with reality—plus the way they tell such a tragic story through this warm, human lens—it's incredible. My only gripe is that opening bit that almost sent me down the wrong path, but everything else? Simply beautiful.

Sure, it hits some of those typical tropes you see in movies like this, but I think it totally works because the core message is so powerful. The whole concept is just really well put together.

The only thing is, there were moments where I was just sitting there waiting for Liam Neeson to have the monster shout, "I don't know who you are, but I will find you and kill you" 😬

Unfortunately, the local AMC Theatres hasn't added it to their lineup just yet.
It seems like they aren't exactly betting big on this one being a hit.

Just like @Steven Newman50, I wasn't quite sure what I was getting into, so I went in without any real expectations.

The animation is stunning 🙏—probably my favorite part of the whole thing. And honestly, I could listen to Liam Neeson talk all day.😍

I’m not going to sit here and dissect the movie or nitpick what worked and what didn't. If I had to describe this film in just one word, it would be "emotion," and when that hits you, there isn't much room left for overthinking.
It really touched me; I think we can all find a little piece of ourselves in this story.
I haven't read the Novel yet, but I'm actually glad I haven't, because some parts of the movie really caught me by surprise. From what I've heard, the film stays very true to the book, so that's definitely next on my reading list.

This movie immediately made me think of Panov's Maze, which is easily one of my all-time favorites, so this one just felt a bit overshadowed by it...

To be honest, I was expecting something with a lot more imagination.

I finally managed to catch it—it took three weeks, but AMC Theatres finally saw fit to send a copy out to my neck of the woods.
In short: absolute bombshell! It’s a stunning film, and now I’m officially on the hunt for the book. Apparently, Amazon US has this gorgeous new edition out—it includes the original Novel plus illustrations, behind-the-scenes details, and interviews with the creators.
Did you guys know that the original author of the idea—the highly acclaimed Siobhan Dowd—actually passed away from cancer, which is why the publisher brought in Patrick Ness to finish the story?
Honestly, it doesn't surprise me at all that the movie flopped in US theaters; a huge chunk of that has to go to the marketing department, who clearly had no clue who they were actually targeting with their campaign (especially since the film is PG-13 for very obvious reasons).
On the flip side, the folks over on the film's Facebook page are saying it did incredibly well in Spain, claiming their advertising push was actually quite solid.

Man, it’s such a bummer that this movie totally flopped at the box office. Like, seriously, the cinematography is gorgeous, the acting is top-tier, and the story? Just incredible. It’s this super raw, honest film tackling some heavy themes, but it just didn't seem to find its crowd here in the States...

Hands down my favorite movie of the year so far.

But honestly, it’s not even surprising, right? Most people probably went in expecting some lighthearted kid's flick and ended up totally let down because it's actually a much more serious take on a children's story.
Which, if you think about it, isn't even really a "kids' movie" in the traditional sense—it's more like a portrait of a boy struggling with... well, I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, but he's facing it in his own way.

Beautiful movie. Honestly, this should be required reading in schools, even if it isn't exactly for kids.

Incredible movie! I was sobbing my eyes out toward the end, and I rarely let myself get that emotional.. I didn't even have high expectations; I just popped it on my laptop to drown out the silence while I worked, but it hooked me instantly!
