Induction cooktops: any recommendations?

I’m looking for some advice from anyone who uses an induction cooktop. Honestly, because my mom can be a bit forgetful—and for safety reasons, I really don't want her leaving a gas stove running unattended anymore—I'm thinking about making the switch. Is it actually true that an induction burner won't even turn on if there isn't a compatible pot sitting on it? Also, if she does happen to forget something on the heat, is there a risk of food boiling over or even catching fire like it might on a traditional stove? Thanks!

Once it hits a certain temperature, the burner shuts off, but it stays in "sleep" mode until the pot or pan heats back up enough to trigger it again. At least, that’s how my four-burner range works at home.

PS — if your mom is starting to get forgetful, honestly, you might want to look into assisted living. Leaving things like this unchecked can lead to some serious, dangerous chaos. I work with seniors, and I see these kinds of mishaps happen almost every single day.
