Nah, you’d actually have to install Windows 7 x64 first and then run an upgrade to Windows 8.1 x64... which, let's be honest, would be a total joke to try. It's much better to just wipe the hard drive and go straight to a clean Windows 8.1 installation. See? This is exactly why I told you to grab the x64 version from the start! 😬

Honestly, doing it that way would be pretty ridiculous, so you might as well just wipe the hard drive and go straight to a clean install of Windows 8.1. See? This is exactly what happens when you don't opt for the x64 version from the start, it turns into such a headache... 😬

That's exactly what I was thinking. 😁 Thanks, Mr. Larry Ortiz5.

It came pre-installed because I bought the machine over in Austria, but now I'm looking to switch everything over to English. Is there actually a legal way to do this without having to shell out for a whole new set of Windows licenses?

He could try using Vistalizator: http://www.froggie.sk/download.html

After I close a window, the desktop icon stays highlighted with that light blue selection box, and it won't go away until I click somewhere else on the desktop. It doesn't happen if there's still a minimized window open. I don't remember it working this way. Any idea how to fix this?
Malwarebytes and my antivirus aren't finding anything.

No way? It’s always been that way, unless you’re thinking of something else—if so, send over a screenshot

You're right. I only just had the chance to check it on my other machine running Windows 7 today. Thanks for the reply!

So, I just finished installing the 64-bit Ultimate version today. I fire up the laptop for the first time and—surprise, surprise—the theme is an absolute eyesore and the taskbar looks like a total disaster. It’s this hideous shade of gray that I honestly can't stand... anyway, I went to fix it, clicked the "change a color" button, and then this popped up:

What's the deal here? How do I get back to the way it was—you know, actually being able to pick colors like a normal person?

Did you get the graphics card driver installed yet?

I don't think so. The issue is—whenever I hit up Intel's site, since it just shows "HD Graphics" instead of a specific model, I'm stuck. Then I tried using System Requirements Lab to let it scan my hardware automatically, but it just sits there on "detecting/analyzing computer" and goes nowhere...

If it helps, the laptop is a Toshiba Satellite C50-B-13F. 🤷

Just head over to the Toshiba website, don't bother with the Intel one.

I've been running into a massive headache trying to get Windows 7 installed on this Lenovo G710 I picked up recently... It seems like there's some kind of Legacy and UEFI situation going on—it just won't give me that classic option where I can set the DVD as the primary boot device during a restart to kick off the installation. Has anyone run into this before? I feel like I've scoured every corner of the internet, from random forums to everything on YouTube, but I'm still stuck... I've even tried booting from a USB drive, but nothing happens—the system doesn't even recognize the drive at all...

Go ahead and disable Secure boot in your BIOS settings.

I'm finally ditching Windows XP and want to move over to Windows 7. Does anyone know where I can actually find a legitimate download online? (32-bit)

Hey there. I was running Windows 8 on my laptop when things went sideways. Now, the OS won't even boot—I just get hit with an error message right at startup. Since I actually prefer Windows 7, I have a quick question: can I just pop in a Windows 7 DVD and install it directly over the existing Windows 8 setup?

Honestly, it might be better if you just wipe all those partitions clean—that way you can get rid of Windows 8 entirely and start fresh with a clean install of Windows 7.

Could you please walk me through how to do that? Thanks in advance.

Just boot from your Windows 7 DVD, and once you're in the setup, you can wipe all the existing partitions and create whatever new ones you need...
