I cannot help but wonder, how many penalties would actually be issued if someone pulled an action similar to this today:

Why is everyone acting so shocked?

High-level sources have confirmed to Autosport that the FIA would almost certainly not have taken any action had the pick-up been conducted in a safe way.

Basically, Mark Webber should’ve waited for the marshals to give him the green light to get onto the track, and Fernando Alonso should've pulled completely off the racing line to grab him.

"The 10-grid place penalty will only be imposed if at least two of the reprimands were imposed for a driving infringement."

Mark Webber's prior two strikes were for hitting Nico Rosberg at the Super Bowl and for ignoring Yellow flags during First Free practice AT The Canadian Grand Prix.

If Webber hadn't messed up earlier, this whole mess in Singapore wouldn't have even triggered a grid penalty.

People can try to be clever all they want, but this was just executed in a chronically stupid way...
Between Alonso stopping dead in the middle of the track in the worst possible spot—even though there's plenty of runoff area in Singapore—🙄
And Webber, too. The marshals weren't waving flags like idiots just for fun; they were doing it because Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton, and the rest of the pack were charging down the straight...

If they’d done this properly, they wouldn't have even gotten a reprimand.
And if Webber hadn't been an idiot earlier in the season, he wouldn't be facing a penalty regardless of this specific mishap in Singapore...

As far as I recall, nobody gets punished when they actually do things the right way...though usually, they're smart enough to do it without a history of screw-ups.

In my opinion, penalties like the one handed to Mark Webber are a cancer on Formula 1. It’s unnecessary, just pure stupidity. They're basically artificially engineering the standings for the next race and messing with the entire championship flow. And why? All because of some mindless safety regulations? Whose safety are we actually talking about here? For those lunatics tearing around the track at breakneck speeds, safety is usually left sitting back in the garage. Formula 1 is racing. Fastest driver wins. Period. You get there by taking a certain level of risk—a risk every single driver accepts the moment they strap themselves into the cockpit. Then you have someone stepping in to play philosopher, claiming this W-ov move wasn't done in a "safe manner." I mean, surely the driver is the one most concerned with his own safety. Why should he care what some textbook nerd thinks? Someone who isn't even out there and just meddles in things that should be decided on the track. I’d love to go see a race again, but I wouldn't spend a dime on races that feel scripted. I'll probably just watch them from home, and honestly, for free.

Whose safety are we talking about? The people running the show who stay safe in the garage while these guys are flying around at breakneck speeds? Formula 1 is racing. Fastest driver wins. Period. You take certain risks just by stepping into the cockpit, and that's a deal every driver makes. Then someone comes along acting like a know-it-all, claiming a W-move wasn't done the "safe way." Look, the driver is the one most invested in staying alive. Why should some bureaucrat, who isn't even out there, get to micromanage how they race? I used to love going to see Formula 1 live, but I won't pay a dime for races that feel scripted. I'll probably just watch them from home for free.

Look, if Formula 1 is trying to improve safety because the drivers themselves asked for it—so people don't die on track like they used to—then it's pretty ridiculous when those same drivers jeopardize themselves and everyone else with stupid, unnecessary moves.

Fernando Alonso acted like a complete idiot here and deserved a proper penalty.

He acts like this, and then he'll be the first one complaining when people talk about Formula 1 safety. Pathetic.

It's like comparing a high-stakes race where the risk was once huge to what happens now after an idiot move like Alonso's.☕

All five of them...
Honestly, this penalty is way more egregious than when Romain Grosjean overtook Felipe Massa, or that nonsense where they ordered Hulkenberg to give back a position he never actually lost. Just endless nonsense.

We can debate this all day, but walking onto the track—or stopping dead in the middle of it—is obviously way more dangerous than clipping a white line by an inch.☕
And all of this coming from two guys who constantly chime in to call other drivers idiots just because they aren't following their precious little safety rules... absolute nonsense.

Man, I had no idea it was actually that close to both of them picking up either Mark Webber or Fernando Alonso—or both of them running off the track entirely—since the broadcast didn't really show that angle ☕

Honestly, I’d almost give Alonso a penalty just for why he decided to stop right there... and where he stopped, too, especially when he had plenty of room on the right side off the racing line, wasn't there? Even though the car ahead of him slowed down, he still ended up handing the spot back to Mark Webber 😬

...so I guess I'm actually kind of glad they did it. Whether they meant to or not, now that points don't matter much for them anymore, they've basically made fools of themselves with those ridiculous steward rulings.

Oh, sure...
This situation is totally harmless, right?🙄

image

And the stewards are clearly geniuses for thinking Nico Rosberg could just plow straight into the back of a car and potentially snap Mark Webber’s legs in half...

But hey, we can't blame them—it's actually all because some corrupt mayor in NYC is charging $$3.25 an hour for parking, so there was just no way anyone could pull over...
image

So yeah, it's definitely the fault of the clueless officials and the greedy local government with their overpriced parking lots...
It definitely wasn't Alonso or Webber...

Sure, penalize all five of them if you have to, but I really hope they don't do it in a way that messes with the final race result, the points earned, or the overall championship standings. 🙂

I’m not saying I have some specific number in mind—honestly, let them pay whatever massive amount they want. But messing with race results? That's just unnecessary, totally unfair, unsporterlike, and honestly pretty counterproductive.

Kenneth Taylor80 said:I'm not saying I know what the perfect fine would be—let them pay whatever massive amount they want. But changing race results? That’s just unnecessary, shady, unsportsmanlike, and completely counterproductive.

Agreed...
But look, like I said before, this whole thing is five times more dangerous than when Romain Grosjean overtook Felipe Massa and crossed the line, or even just missed it by a few inches...
which, by the way, was a mess because Massa pushed Grosjean off the track, yet Grosjean is the one getting screwed with a penalty instead of Massa... because some stupid rule punishes the guy who crosses the line rather than the guy who shoves someone else over it.🙄
It's basically the exact same situation with Nico Hulkenberg in this race...
And there's always some "blah blah blah" explanation, but there could have been a wall right behind that line... if there had been a wall, nobody would've even attempted the overtake in the first place...

If drivers are actually getting penalized and race results are being overturned for stuff like that on track, then there is absolutely zero excuse for parking a car right in the middle of the racing line (especially in a perfectly functional car when there's plenty of room to pull over 🙄) and causing people to sprint across the track while cars are still moving...
Because by that logic, any car could just plow straight into Mark Webber or Fernando Alonso... and then we wouldn't have to worry about people running across the track or stopping cars in the middle of the road.

I honestly don't see a single logical reason why Grosjean gets penalized for that pass while these other two guys get off scot-free...

Besides, if it's totally fine for a car to sit in the middle of the track and fine for people to be running around the circuit, then what the hell is the point of a Safety Car?
Why bother changing race dynamics with a Safety Car 🤷
if it's apparently perfectly okay to leave a car on the track and let marshals run around picking up debris or pushing cars around...

It is truly a stroke of luck that the officials didn't catch wind of this particular situation:

And even if they did, so what?🤷
He went off track before he even made the move... so there shouldn't be a penalty.🤷

EDIT:

Mark Webber is a genius.😁
If nothing else, at least he managed to shut one of those judges up for once.😬 🙏🤣

Even Alonso isn't half bad at Photoshop.🙏

🤣Damn, they should probably just wipe his warnings clean for such a top-tier joke.
