V/H/S 2 (2013)

The Hollywood Reporter just dropped the news—this sequel is sticking to the original blueprint. If you caught the first one (currently hitting limited US theaters and streaming), you know the drill: a crew hunts for a lost VHS tape and stumbles into a nightmare. This installment? A slight pivot—it follows "two investigators who stumble upon a tape while searching for a missing student."

Production is going global—we're talking shoots in Los Angeles, Maryland, Nova Scotia, California and Indonesia.

V/H/S earned its reputation by being intense enough to actually send people to the ER once or twice. Is it life-threatening? No. But is it one of the most entertaining horror flicks in recent memory? Absolutely. While it's a shame some of the original crew aren't back, seeing Evans, Sanchez and Eisener handle segments provides a solid sense of balance.

The horror anthology is back for round two. V/H/S 2—the sequel to this year's breakout hit—has officially been greenlit. The production team remains largely intact (including the folks from Bloody Disgusting) and they've secured at least one veteran from the first film (Adam Wingard, the director of You're Next), though the rest of the creative lineup is fresh blood.

Leading the charge is Gareth Evans, the man behind The Raid, teaming up with Timo Tjahjanto for a segment. We also have Eduardo Sanchez, a co-director of The Blair Witch Project, working alongside producer Gregg Hala. Rounding out the roster are Jason Eisener (Hobo with a Shotgun) and Simon Barrett—Wingard's longtime writing partner—who will be stepping into the director's chair for the first time.

A second installment of V/H/S is coming in 2013. There is no official release date yet—though I am hoping for something soon 🙂.

Cool. 🙂 I actually dug V/H/S, it was pretty good

I just really hope they don't go overboard with the sequels—I mean, this doesn't feel like the kind of horror concept that can sustain more than maybe two or three installments before it gets stale. Who knows what they're thinking, I guess.

Also, I'm really hoping they actually explain that final scene from V/H/S.

Exactly. It would be ideal if they wrapped up the narrative with this second installment. Though, I have a feeling this might end up being dragged out like Paranormal Activity.

though I guess they could just keep pumping out sequels forever—you know, just slightly tweaking things here and there... like finding some random VHS tapes and shoving in new horror stories, which is basically what it looks like they're doing with this sequel, if I'm reading the situation right. ☕

I have exactly one word for this movie: ASYLUM 😁

Every horror junkie needs to check this out, if nothing else just for the "Safe Haven" vibes...

Safe Heaven is definitely the highlight, but everything else is just straight garbage

I’m actually digging how found footage has evolved lately. It’s like the director kind of hinted at this shift a while back, and now these V/H/S flicks have basically cemented this whole new direction—this subtle blend of found footage mixed with actual genre filmmaking. Even if you aren't a huge fan of the style, it feels fresh and unlike anything else out there right now.
Honestly, almost every segment gave me the creeps. I will say though, that last story felt a bit rushed and kind of "cheap" compared to the rest.

All in all, for what it is within its subgenre, it’s definitely a solid job! 👍

I actually think the rest is awesome 😉 and it seems like pretty much everyone agrees with me 😉

Such a killer horror flick. Man, I just love how they handled the camera work—huge props to the director for knowing how to move the lens like that, you know? It’s such a relief compared to those old-school movies where the camera just sits there perfectly still and does absolutely nothing 😁

not everyone thinks that way when I’m sitting here feeling different... hang on, I actually wrote a review of these horror shorts, let me just paste it here:

The first one was alright, even if it felt uneven... some parts were bad and others were good. The second part has fewer segments and is much worse.

The first cassette shows a guy who gets a bionic eye implanted after an accident and starts seeing dead people; the second is about a cyclist who gets bitten by a zombie one morning and we follow the action through his POV; the third story follows a film crew visiting a house owned by an ultra-religious cult fanatic to film a documentary, which obviously turns into total chaos; the fourth cassette is about kids home alone being attacked by aliens...

The first cassette is solid but doesn't really offer anything new or innovative—just a few cheap jump scares and a hot redhead, nothing special.

The second cassette is pretty monotonous and forgettable, though it is cool how it was shot in a nice park/woods on a sunny morning. The ending is a bit bloodier and helps the vibe, but again, nothing to write home about.

The third cassette is a weird, funny segment packed with blood, guts, and exploding heads, plus an unintentionally hilarious demon with a goat head (or at least that's what it looked like to me) and wings. I was dying laughing... I guess it was supposed to be scary, but I was cracking up the whole time that demon was on screen, pure comedy.

The fourth cassette is a total disaster where you have no clue what's happening because of all the cuts, shaky cam, and loud, annoying noises. I think they did that in the other stories too, but here it's turned up to eleven and I have no idea what I even watched. Pretty bad.

Some guy and a girl are watching the cassettes in a college dorm or something. I remember the first part having a great, impactful ending, but that's not the case here. It's just bad.

I mean, those old-school horror flicks? They’re kind of a joke now—bad acting, cheesy special effects, you know the drill—but today's movies have totally set a whole new bar 😉

the first one is the best benchmark, and honestly, it's way better
plus there are plenty of found footage horrors out there that beat the first Blockbuster. I mean, yeah, the first one is the obvious choice

Maybe this is technically the most well-made found footage movie I've seen yet, and I've watched plenty of them 😁
