White House Down (2013)

So, when some paramilitary group decides to take over the White House, who are you actually calling to bail us out? Harrison Ford? Look, the guy’s getting up there in age, and since he already had that run-in with the bad guys attacking symbols of the US Presidency—I mean, what's more iconic than Air Force One?—it might be time for someone else to step up... This kind of gig seems tailor-made for Bruce Willis. It’s basically John McLane on a sightseeing tour when the villains crash the party... standard stuff. Unfortunately, his line was busy because he was too occupied playing cat and mouse with the baddies in Die Hard in Russia. Jason Statham? Does he even have a green card? And with that heavy British accent of his, you could probably mistake him for one of the attackers—not to mention how a Brit usually ends up saving an American anyway. Steven Seagal? Sure, maybe he saved the USS Missouri once, but these days he should probably book an appointment with Renata Sopek just to drop a few pounds... maybe fifty of them, so he looks somewhat human. Which leaves us with the "younger" talent. Loved by some, loathed by others, but apparently, Channing Tatum is the one stepping up to the plate. He plays this Secret Service agent who somehow manages to be at the right place at the right time—thank God he wasn't somewhere else entirely—when some goons seize the White House (clearly the security sucks big time) and it falls on him to save the US President and all those high-ranking officials who actually run the show. We're looking at a new project from the master of destruction, that German guy living stateside: Roland Emmerich, who's returning to what he does best after taking a little break from blowing the world to smithereens. Joining Tatum, we've got Jamie Foxx, Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Woods.

Just adding my two cents here—we've already got another movie coming out next year with basically the same plot. It's an $80 million "Olympus Has Fallen" rip-off directed by Antoine Fuqua, featuring Scottish Gerard Butler saving the US President inside the White House...

Well, we already had two Snow White films and two Lincoln films this year, so it seems the pattern of repetition is set to continue well into the coming years.

My only gripe is why they're handing the lead to Channing Tatum... he's just not there yet. Maybe in a few years once he actually grows into his craft
But having Richard Jenkins and James Woods? 👍

Unlike that absolute train wreck that was Die Hard in Russia, this actually looks like it might be fun...

This actually looks pretty intriguing... I'm genuinely stoked to see Jamie Foxx in this, and I really have a feeling it might actually rank among the better ones. I just hope I don't end up disappointed and that the whole thing doesn't turn out to be a total snooze fest 🙂

So, looking at the current box office numbers, things aren't looking great. Honestly, this movie is shaping up to be a total financial disaster, right on par with how Lone Ranger completely tanked.

Honestly, it’s an old trick.
Back in 2011, we had two movies all about casual hookup culture.
In 2006, it was two films about magicians in Europe during the turn of the century.
Then 1998 gave us two flicks about a meteor heading straight for Earth.
1997 was heavy on volcano disasters and three Die Hard-style plane movies (plus one the year before that).
1990 brought us two big-budget gangster epics.
And in 1989, there were two or three—maybe even four—underwater sci-fi action movies.
1984 had two movies set entirely within dreams.
And so on, and so forth...

I guess Americans really do have a thing for seeing the White House get leveled 😁

So, some rookie in an undershirt is supposed to save the US President?

Tatum's character actually reminded me quite a bit of his role in Jump Street—he's got that same energy! Personally, I find this one way more engaging than Olympus Has Fallen.

Honestly, this movie was a blast—definitely better than Olympus Has Fallen. It’s got that classic Roland Emmerich vibe written all over it: massive explosions, the White House and Air Force One getting absolutely wrecked, snappy one-liners, and some genuinely funny bits. Not to mention the meta joke when the White House tour guide points out the center of the building and says, "That's the part the aliens trashed in Independence Day." 😁

I’d much rather sit through a sequel to White House Down than watch the announced London Has Fallen.

Americans aren't really feeling a White House Down vibe. If Independence Day had dropped right after 9/11, it would've been a total disaster at the box office.

Look, Olympus actually did pretty well for itself, so that argument just doesn't hold water.

The movie would have landed much better if they hadn't included that girl—you know, the one who stays impossibly brave even with a gun to her head because of her intense sense of duty—while the President tells her he has to prioritize millions of others over her life instead.

What an absolutely abysmal and pathetic way to wrap things up. Honestly, those lines were just brain-dead. It was decent enough as mindless entertainment for a while, but let's be real—OHF was way better.

I think this movie would have been incredible if it were titled White House Down and starred Steven Seagal instead.😁

On another note, why does the "tech expert" in these kinds of movies always have to be such a massive weirdo? It reminded me of the guy from Die Hard and, of course, the character from Under Siege 2.

Just dropping my thoughts here. Caught this at the theater and honestly, I was so sucked in I totally forgot I was on a date with a girl sitting right next to me 🙏 This isn't just another mindless American trash flick about an attack on the White House with zero plot. The directing was solid, but what actually stuck with me was how they handled the characters and the depth of the story. Channing was great, though I guess I expected nothing less. That character arc he pulled off was pretty phenomenal 🙏
The young girl was incredible too; her performance was probably the highlight for me and really gave me something to think about. That kind of pure, innocent patriotism... it's something we could all use more of
