If you're looking for the most reliable and straightforward way to convert a DVD into DivX, I honestly can't recommend Auto Gordian Knot enough.
I haven't had much luck with things like Factory or even basic video converters; I really doubt they can pull off the same level of quality.
The great thing about Auto GK is that it lets you specify the exact size of the final file. For instance, if you want your DivX files to be about a third of the original DVD size, you can set it that way. That way, if you're converting all three parts of a movie like *The Godfather*, you can make sure all three pieces fit perfectly onto a single DVD in DivX format.
