Forget about messing with EasyBCD; while everything is still relatively fresh, I guess you should just format the hard drive and go for a clean installation of Windows 7.

Hey there,

I've run into a small issue that I can't quite figure out (hopefully it's an easy fix). My volume control icon has completely vanished, even though my speakers are working perfectly fine. When I click down by the wireless icon and go into Properties, I see the clock, volume, network, notifications, and Action Center icons—everything works except for the volume one. It won't let me interact with it at all; it just says it's turned off and gives me no way to change it. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

Also, when I go into Customize, volume shows up there, and it's definitely set to show both the icon and notifications...

Thanks

Does anyone know of a website out there that lists Linux terminal commands alongside their equivalents for the Windows command prompt on Windows 7?

I stumbled upon http://www.yolinux.com/TUTORIALS/uni...dos_users.html , but I’ve noticed that not all the commands actually work quite right...

It would be really helpful if the commands were organized by topic rather than just being listed in alphabetical order...

Ideally, I'd like them organized by topic rather than just an alphabetical list.

There aren't really "equivalent" commands.
Think of it this way: Linux is a Formula 1 race car, complete with a dedicated pit crew and mechanics, whereas the Windows command prompt is more like a shopping cart you're pushing through a local grocery store.

Any Linux shell and the Windows command prompt are simply incomparable tools.

I could really use some help here. I just finished installing Windows 7, but whenever I try to set up my DSL connection, I keep getting error 651.
Everything was working perfectly fine this morning, but ever since the installation, I can't get online and that error keeps popping up. Does anyone know what steps I should take to fix this?

Head over to the Network and Sharing Center and pull up your Local Area Connection—just make sure the connection hasn't been disabled on you—then hop into Properties and double-check that the TCP/IPv6 protocol is turned off.

Why does my desktop background slideshow only switch images if I set the interval to 10 or 30 seconds? When I try to set a longer duration, it just stays stuck on a single image.

I'm planning on picking up Windows 7 Professional 64 in the next few days.
I was wondering, though—is there actually anything specific I should be looking out for when I'm buying this? I just want to make sure I don't end up footing the bill for a completely blank disc or something equally useless. < .>

I’ll probably just look for a deal on Craigslist or maybe some other local classifieds site.

By the way, I happened to stumble upon something described as "Windows 7 Professional 64-bit with SP1 OEM refurbished."

I'm trying to wrap my head around what "OEM refurbished" actually implies here. Something keeps nagging at me—I think I read somewhere that certain versions of Windows are tied specifically to the original hardware they came with, meaning you can't just take them and slap them onto a custom-built PC or some other rig we put together ourselves. Does anyone know if that's actually how it works?

I mean, at the end of the day, I really wouldn't want to just throw my money down the drain.

Here’s a link where you can grab the original Windows 7 files. It’s completely legit and free to download.

You'll find all the different versions there, so just pick whichever one fits your needs. Since it's an ISO file, you can just burn it onto a blank DVD and you've basically got an official Windows 7 DVD ready to go. As for getting a product key—maybe try checking eBay to see if anyone is actually selling them? Just a heads-up, though: you can't download Windows Ultimate and then try to use a product key meant for something like Windows Home Premium. That won't work—it won't activate the software.

Check out this link and look under: Windows 7 ISO download links:

Just a quick heads-up if you’re planning on buying Windows 7 and want to ensure you're 100% legally compliant:

When federal auditors came by our office to audit our software licenses, they specifically demanded:

- The original purchase receipt for the Windows license
- The actual retail box—they check to make sure the serial number on the packaging matches the receipt perfectly
- The COA sticker on the PC itself, verifying that the product key in the software matches the physical label

We honestly thought we could just cut corners by picking up some cheap stickers online from a site like eBay, but let me tell you—it's not worth the headache. It's all very strict stuff.

For more specifics, you can always reach out to Microsoft at 1-800-MICROSOFT
or contact the IRS or your local regulatory agency for guidance on compliance.

If he’s just setting this up for personal use at home, then what’s the big deal? Why would anyone bother buying software from some shady guy when you can just download it for free and legally? I mean—even Microsoft provides the direct download links themselves. All you really need is an original product key—maybe ask a friend or a neighbor who works over at a place like FedEx if they can help you snag a Windows 7 product key.

Now, if he needs it for a business... well, that's a whole different story. I wouldn't go there.

As for home use, I'm honestly not entirely sure...
I do know how things work if you're running a business or a small firm, though...

To be perfectly honest, I just use Windows 7 from TPB🤣

I'll probably grab it through Craigslist or some other online ad listing.

What does "OEM refurbished" actually mean? Something is ringing a bell—I think I read somewhere that certain versions of Windows are locked to the original hardware they came with, so you can't just install them on a custom PC we build ourselves or something like that.

Anyway, I just don't want to throw my money down the drain.

It's likely some kind of OEM recovery disk from a brand like Dell or HP—you should definitely ask the seller about that. Though, honestly, they might not even know. 😁 There's a chance it won't even work.

I decided to switch back to Windows 7 from Windows 8 since that OS is just a total disaster.

Hey everyone. I see there are some real pros in here, so I have a quick question. One of my rigs is stuck on a black screen where you can only see the cursor moving around... I try a System Restore and it works fine for a few days before the problem crawls back. I tried performing a System Restore and disabling Windows Update entirely. It holds up for a bit, then fails again. Then I tried a System Restore, confirmed Windows Update was definitely turned off, and manually installed a newer Intel driver for the 2000 graphics card. After resetting the PC, it’s the exact same story. I even did a System Restore back to May, and it worked perfectly until I shut the thing down; once I powered it back up, I was right back to the black screen and the cursor. Currently, I'm in Safe Mode running `checkdisk /F /R` and it's grinding away, but if it comes up clean and doesn't find any hardware errors, does anyone have any other ideas? I'm honestly pulling my hair out over this one... It was connected via DVI, but now I've switched to standard VGA, so that shouldn't be the issue, though I know it's been a factor for some people.

Thanks in advance 🙂

When the federal inspectors came to our office to audit our Windows installations, they demanded:

- The original purchase receipt for the Windows license
- The physical box the software came in, ensuring the serial number on the box matched the receipt
- The sticker on the PC itself, verifying that the CD-key matches what's installed in Windows

So, we also thought it would be easy to just grab a sticker from eBay, but all that is just nonsense...

For more specific details, you can call Microsoft at 1-800-MICROSOFT
or contact the IRS or local regulatory authorities

Federal inspectors pull this stuff out of thin air sometimes. Your best bet is to call Microsoft directly, and if an inspector starts giving you grief about what Microsoft told you, you can just point to their word. You can absolutely buy Windows without the retail box; you just need the keys and/or the licensing agreements. I've seen plenty of cases where the inspector had no clue what they were even looking at. Honestly, this whole obsession with receipts is ridiculous because you could have received a computer as a gift, started a business, and put it into service, yet the stickers and the keys in Windows still match up perfectly. There's zero issue regarding actual licensing. It seems like these guys just make things up to slap you with a fine. Besides, you can throw the box away. What if your wife accidentally stepped on it or tossed it against a wall during an argument? Are you suddenly non-compliant because of her?

Hi there...

Does anyone happen to have a link for a desktop gadget that tracks CPU temperature? I've been searching everywhere, but I'm clearly having a bit of a hard time finding it...

I found this screenshot on another thread showing what someone else's desktop looks like.

From what I can see in the screenshot, it says AIDA64 Extreme

http://www.aida64.com/

I’d actually suggest checking out HWMonitor instead—it’s free, which is always nice—but just a heads-up: it doesn't have a gadget option. That means you'll have to keep the actual program open if you want to keep an eye on all your system temps at once.

I was browsing the AIDA64 site, but I only managed to grab the main installer and that HW Monitor tool I’ve used before. Honestly, having to manually launch everything isn't very practical for me. I already use various gadgets to track my GPU temperatures without any issues, but I just can't seem to find a decent one for the CPU. 😢

Thanks anyway 🙂

You actually have to manually add the gadget—it won't just pop up on your desktop automatically. Just click onto your desktop, head over to the gadgets menu, and see if the AIDA64 one is listed there. It really should be available, since that screenshot clearly shows the AIDA64 gadget right there.
