Here’s the headache—I went ahead and installed DirectX 9.0 C, and while Everest is actually acknowledging it's running on version 9, dxdiag is still stubbornly insisting that I'm on version 11.

It shouldn't be an issue since you already have 11 installed—when you run the 9.0 C setup, it'll just grab those few specific files that are missing from your system. You might want to dig into the tweaks and config settings here, specifically regarding the image quality and textures—it’s possible some setting is cranked up too high and that's what's causing the crash: http://forums.steampowered.com/forum....php?t=2225829

Is this a legit copy or a cracked version?

I finally figured out what’s causing the headache, but now I'm stuck—I have zero clue how to actually update this driver. If you could walk me through it, you'd be a lifesaver. Here's a screenshot of what I'm looking at:

You could head straight over to the laptop manufacturer's website and just grab the driver from there. Or, if you're feeling a bit more adventurous, you can swing by the ATI site and dig through the menus until you find the specific driver that matches your version of Windows and your particular graphics card.

If you're running Windows 7 32, here is where you can grab the driver.

So, I’m running Windows 7 64-bit... I went ahead and downloaded this massive 235MB driver this morning http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...b_win7-64.aspx, but after the installation finished? Absolute nothing. Same old headache. I even tried following those specific troubleshooting steps here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...=ws.10%29.aspx, but that was also a total bust. Right now, I’m mid-download on this driver http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...em=ob-105905-1.

EDIT: Okay, I finally grabbed the driver from that last link, and now it’s throwing an error at me—acting like I need to install NET Framework 4 first. So, naturally, I download it, install it, and the second I click "finish," I get hit with a "Setup has failed" message. Seriously? I can’t believe this—it feels like every single thing I try just hits a brick wall...
Do you think this might have anything to do with the fact that I deleted a file named "DirectX" from my registry?

Run this to see which devices aren't installed yet: http://www.zhangduo.com/udi.html

And look, grab your drivers exclusively from the HP site—since we're dealing with their hardware here—don't go grabbing some random AMD driver or whatever. But before you even touch that, pop in a Windows 7 disc, open up the command prompt, and run sfc /scannow to patch up any busted system files. Once that’s done, just let Windows update do its thing. Honestly, where on earth were you thinking, trying to install games when you haven't even handled the most basic step of installing actual drivers?

Here’s a screenshot of all the devices currently uninstalled—doesn't look like anything stands out as a red flag to me:

The real headache is that I don't have the installation disc handy from last week—my buddy, who's one of those "I know everything about computers" types, just finished setting this whole thing up recently. Can you tell me if I messed things up by deleting the DirectX folder from the registry? If that's what caused the glitch, I'm probably looking at having to run a system restore.

Didn't you receive a disc containing all the necessary manufacturer drivers when you originally purchased that laptop?
Are you running a flat installation and have you checked Windows Update yet?
I fail to see why you would even bother hunting down drivers on a DVD for Windows 7.

I just realized—after digging through everything here—that I didn't actually get any driver CDs with the laptop.

As for those other two questions you threw my way... I'm not really following. Could you break them down for me?

Yeah, it’s definitely a problem—honestly, it’s a miracle you even got DirectX 9 to install after messing with that. That’s exactly why I suggested running sfc /scannow in the first place—to see if it can patch up whatever went missing. Just try running the command anyway; if your friend set up a recovery partition during the installation, you shouldn't even need a DVD. If the sfc command fails to fix things, then yeah, go ahead and do a system restore. Also, head over to the HP website, look up your specific laptop model, and just grab all the drivers you need—graphics, chipset, USB, LAN, whatever else is missing.

Benjamin King2, thanks for the assist, but I actually ended up seeing a pro today and they got everything sorted out 👍. Turns out the headache was just a driver conflict—I’ve got two GPUs in this rig, one Intel and one AMD, and the system was completely ignoring the Intel one. We had to hunt down the official drivers from the Intel website to get them talking to each other properly. It took us a solid two hours of digging just to realize that was the issue—total waste of time, really. But hey, Call of Duty is running smooth now. Thanks again for the help.

Alright, here's the deal. I'm running Windows 7 on an HP CQ58 Notebook. Even though I've set the brightness to max for both plugged in and battery mode, the screen still dims itself whenever I unplug it. It stays dark regardless of the settings. All my drivers are fully up to date, too. Any ideas? Thanks.

Just head over to "Adjust plan brightness," set things how you want them, and everything should work fine. 😉

So both skates are on full brightness, but the screen still looks a bit dimmer when I'm running on battery versus being plugged in... It’s not a huge difference, but you can definitely tell. Is that just how it works?

If everything else is functioning fine, then yeah, that's pretty standard.

So, why does Windows 7 sometimes refuse to show PDF thumbnails? I checked the settings and they're definitely on, since JPG thumbnails are working just fine. I used to have Adobe Reader 9.5 and everything looked perfect, but now the thumbnails just vanished out of nowhere. It’s not an option issue, because I already checked that...
Also, I've been trying to grab Adobe Reader 11 from their site lately, but instead of the 36 MB file it's supposed to be, I only get a measly 1.01 MB download. Then when I try to run it, I just get some random script error. Tried switching up browsers, but no luck... thanks.

Not sure how it works on Windows 7 (I’m stuck using Windows XP at the office, but I have Windows 8 at home), but PDF thumbnails show up just fine for me in File Explorer. 🤷

Adobe Reader 11.0.4, English, Windows 7 = 48.2 MB (not including that McAfee Security Scan plus)

So, I'm not entirely sure if this is the right sub to ask in, but I could really use some help here😢

I transferred a few photos from my digital camera to my computer, and then I went ahead and deleted them from the computer
But now... now I'm trying to get them back on the PC, but whenever I plug the camera in, it just says there are no new files to import😲🙂

It seems like I'm stuck because I can't get any of those pictures from the camera back onto my computer again
What should I do?🙂 😢 😢

Maybe you had the Always erase from device after importing option checked in your import settings. 🤷
