Hey everyone!
I recently installed Windows 7 Ultimate. During the setup, it told me I didn't need a serial key, so I just left those fields blank, hit next, and let it do its thing.
Now I've run into a bit of a snag. After about three weeks, I started getting a black screen—no desktop image at all—and a message popped up saying my Windows isn't genuine and the registration period has expired. Is there any way to fix this and keep everything running smoothly? Can this even be resolved? A buddy of mine is using the exact same setup and he isn't having any of these issues. Everything else on the PC works perfectly fine, but this little pop-up is getting pretty annoying!
Thanks!

Either just wipe it and reinstall Windows or go hit up Google for answers, because you won't find any handouts here.

I'm thinking about finally making the jump from Windows XP over to Windows 7, but I wanted to be smart about it—you know, make sure my old rig could actually handle it first. So, I downloaded the Windows 7 Advisor, got it installed, hit that "check start" button... and absolutely nothing happened. Just dead air. Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

Give us the specs. CPU, RAM, what else you running?
And how old is this thing anyway?

After leaving my computer idle for just a few minutes, it logs me out automatically. Then, as soon as I move the mouse, I’m hit with the password prompt again. This has never happened before—any idea how I can disable this?

and how old the rig is

AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+
running at 2.2GHz with 2046MB of RAM
paired with an NVIDIA GeForce 9400 gt komp

The machine is about 6 years old now.

Fingers crossed it actually works...

I'm hoping it can still handle it...

It should run without any issues at all...

Hopefully it still pulls its weight...

It might actually run this week, assuming you can even track down all the drivers for your motherboard first.

Older Asus boards usually give you a bit of a headache with this stuff.🙂

I am at a loss as to where to turn... I have Windows 7, and it refuses to burn any CDs, ejecting them almost immediately after a few seconds, though they aren't blank. Does anyone know which program I might install to actually burn a disc properly?

I'd probably go with Ashampoo Burning studio Free. You can grab it here

You should probably try what Keith Bennett38 suggested, or just go with CDburnerXP

Man, that link is triggering my Eset Nod 32 with a virus warning the second you hit download.
I've been using this same program forever though, and honestly, it's solid. 🙂

Eset Nod 32 flags a virus on that link when you go to download it.🙂

I've been using this same program for ages and I'm pretty happy with it.

I use MS Security Essentials—honestly, I think it's better than the NOD software I used to have—and I haven't had any issues. It might be that during installation it tries to bundle the "Babylon toolbar," which is probably why NOD is flagging it as junk.

I also use 🙂Ashampoo
and it's pretty solid; it's lightweight, easy to install, and just works. You can grab it here

Anyone got a clue why my account passwords keep disappearing? 😕

So, I’m logged in as admin, creating specific users and assigning them privileges—you know, sharing drives and folders so some people can see certain files, some can see everything, and others can actually edit stuff. I'm doing this because it's the only way to get things working with:

A PC running Windows XP
A Windows Media Player that acts like a VLC Media Player (Popcorn A-110)
A DVB-S Receiver acting as a Windows Media Player (VU+ Solo)

And all that other junk.

Basically, I set up these users for each device, assigned their passwords, did everything by the book, and then suddenly they just can't log in anymore.😕

It’s like the passwords are changing themselves or just vanishing into thin air.🤷

This is the third or fourth time I've had to reset everything (except the admin password, which stays perfectly fine)🤷.🙂

I don't get it. Is there some weird expiration date on passwords created by an Administrator? Or am I supposed to be setting these users up differently?🤷

If anyone has an idea, let me know. For what it's worth, I haven't even tried logging in directly from the computer itself.🤷

Yeah, for sure. It definitely sees it as junk.

The software itself is actually pretty solid, though. 🙂

Check if you have a screen saver active with the "On resume, display logon screen" option checked. 🤔

Here is the situation. I accidentally installed Windows 7 32-bit instead of the 64-bit version. Since I am running 4GB of RAM, I am wondering if it is actually worth the hassle of reinstalling the 64-bit edition just to see if I might get any noticeable performance gains.

Thanks!

Aside from gaining maybe half a gig of usable RAM, you aren't going to see much else...

If anything, I would argue you might end up with less, since 64-bit applications tend to be more resource-heavy than their 32-bit counterparts...

You might see a difference in very specific software, but for standard daily use, you won't notice a thing. My advice would be to just stick with the 32-bit version unless you specifically need the extra memory overhead for running virtual machines or something similar...

I’d honestly go as far as saying it might be less, since 64-bit applications tend to be heavier than their 32-bit counterparts.

The difference only really shows up in specific software, which isn't something you'll notice during standard daily use. My advice is to just stick with 32-bit unless you specifically need the extra memory overhead for running virtual machines or something similar.

I mainly use my PC for multimedia, browsing, and gaming—in that order.

So, I should just leave it as is?
