Anyone still running Windows 7?

I’ve got another quick question about the installation process if anyone’s got a second to help me out.
I haven't quite gotten around to wiping that starter version yet—I'm planning to tackle that over the weekend since I really need some extra breathing room to get it done.
The first time I ever did an install was on my mom's brand new empty laptop.
Now that I've realized it isn't actually that big of a deal, I want to wipe my own machine and load up some fresh Windows, but my disc drive is being super finicky and won't even read the CD.
I figured out you can do the whole thing via USB instead, but I'm a little nervous about the part where you have to go into the BIOS and mess with the boot priority to select the DVD/CD drive.
How do I actually tell the system to kick off the installation from a USB drive?
I don't recall seeing an option for that at all; it just seemed like there was the hard drive and the CD, and that was it.🤷

If you can't remember, just go ahead and check—it won't hurt anything. If there isn't anything there, just exit the BIOS and you're good to go.

I honestly don't think I'd even know how to get out of there,😂

Windows 7
Build 7601
This copy of Windows is not genuine
I keep getting this message popping up in the bottom right corner of my desktop. Even when I try to change my wallpaper, it just reverts back to a solid black screen after a little while. Any idea what I should do to fix this?

That basically means your Windows isn't legitimate. It looks like you already tried to authorize it online, but the Windows server is telling you the key isn't valid. As for the background image, it’s always going to turn black no matter what you do because that "This copy is not genuine" watermark is stuck there. Honestly, your computer can still run just fine without needing to buy a whole new version of Windows. The only real annoyance is that whenever you boot up, you'll have to wait about 5 or 6 seconds so you can click "Resolve later" before you can actually get to work..
That's why you really have to watch out for bootleg software when buying Windows. If you stick to authorized retailers, everything works smoothly.
But hey, if the pirated version doesn't cut it for you, you can always pick up a genuine copy of Windows.😬

Thanks so much for the hand, I really appreciate it!😉
Look, if you weren't feeling up to answering, you could have just skipped the question entirely. No biggie.🙄
Getting a USB to actually boot up is probably going to be one of those little hurdles that feels like a total headache, but I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually.😬

I figured I’d jump in here and ask for some help too 😁
I've been working with my HP 6830 and Windows 7 Ultimate x64 lately, but ever since I finished the installation, I've run into a bit of a snag with the Bluetooth drivers. Every time I try to run the setup, it insists that the hardware isn't even there. It's a bit baffling because everything was working perfectly just last week, and I didn't have any issues running it on Windows XP either. It seems like this problem only popped up after my most recent reinstall; now, when I check the Device Manager, I'm staring at two yellow warning icons. Does anyone have any advice or steps I should follow to get this sorted out? 😁

I actually figured out that my Windows wasn't genuine either, but I was just wondering if there’s any way to fix that. I saw some stuff on a few international sites saying it could be changed somehow, I just couldn't quite wrap my head around how to actually do it.

Look, don't go dropping questions like that here—it’s against the rules. For starters, maybe take a second to actually read through the forum guidelines.

Honestly, though, Bluetooth on these laptops almost never seems to work correctly anyway...

👋
So, did you actually check if you can boot from a USB drive yet?

Look, my Broadcom chip actually works, but I had to jump through absolute hoops to get it running.
I have no clue how to find the specific x64 drivers. Should I be looking for the manufacturer's name and just Google it? 🤷

It actually worked perfectly fine before, which is exactly why I'm trying to get it running again. It’s not that I absolutely can't live without it, but I just can't quite wrap my head around why it suddenly refuses to accept any drivers right after I finished installing Windows. :/🤷
#4156 ·
Either just Google some other drivers—assuming you even know who the manufacturer is or if the damn thing's already fried. It’s all disposable junk these days, honestly. I really hope it isn't 😉
#4157 ·
It didn't crash, because I actually made sure to use it right before I started the Windows installation 🙂 ...I'll be sure to double-check everything later :/

So, here’s the situation: I’ve got a pretty small hard drive, and since I’m running Windows 7, my C: partition space seems to be vanishing into thin air every single day. It feels suspicious to me because, if I recall correctly, I haven't been installing any massive programs or heavy games lately. I just did a quick check, and I need you guys to tell me if this is actually normal or if I'm missing something. I have no idea how to shrink this down. For instance, my Program Files folder is only about 6 GB, yet the rest of the space is being eaten up by the Windows folder. Here is a link to a screenshot: http://i42.tinypic.com/20gitg5.jpg. Btw, I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate edition...☕

From where I’m sitting, your situation looks fine. I’m running Windows Professional X64 myself, and my Win directory sits at 16.8 GB, so your numbers aren't out of line.
If you find yourself hitting a wall with storage, just clear out your temp files, wipe your browser history, or trim down your system restore points.
